Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne as he was called after his ennoblement in 1762, is Sweden's most famous scientist. Linnaeus is primarily known for having created the nomenclature for plants, published for the first time in Species plantarum in 1753. Born in 1707 in southern Sweden, he studied at the University of Lund and later at Uppsala where he became professor of medicine in 1741. Before his academic appointment, he had a remarkable international career resulting from the introduction of his Systema naturae, published in its first edition in 1735 in Amsterdam. Annotation enhances the value of documentary editions, which is in part why early publications without such notes frequently confused readers, especially those with limited background knowledge. In modem documentary editions annotations provide important historical references, which means that misidentifications, especially when copied repeatedly, can have lasting negative impact.

Despite the economic twists and turns of scholarly V publishing, presses can bank on selling Civil War documentary editions. Like books on sex and the Nazis, Civil War titles satisfy a seemingly insatiable appetite of readers both at home and abroad. This is especially true for handsomely illustrated memoirs like Eye of the Storm: A Civil War Odyssey, edited by Charles F. Bryan, Jr., and Nelson D. Lankford of the Virginia Historical Society. Motivated by his interest in Francis Lieber's importance in the hIstory of the University of South Carolina, as well as Lieber's reflections on European works of art, Charles R. Mack, professor of Art History at South Carolina, with his wife Ilona S. Mack, has edited from manuscript the journal Lieber kept for much of his European "sabbatical" of 1844-45. The extended title provided by the editors advances their views of the significance of Lieber's journal and implies a potential readership for their text. Indeed, the editorial claim that Lieber was "one of the nineteenth-century's most influential minds" is bold. More …

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

On August 1, 1977 Charles Glassick assumed his duties as president of Gettysburg College. With the 25th anniversary of that event approaching, it seemed appropriate to take stock of Glassick's accomplishments. This was an eventful presidency for Gettysburg, as the college began to identify itself less as a worthy, but modest, Lutheran institution of higher learning than as a national liberal arts college. The process of embracing a new identity was not always smooth, but under Glassick's leadership the college prospered. Gettysburg in 1989 remained committed as always to the liberal arts mission it had long espoused, but it did …

Environmental History Of New England: William Cronon’S Changes In The Land, Tyler Veak

Faculty Publications and Presentations

William Cronon’s Changes in the Land presaged a radical turn in environmental thought. His seminal work dramatically reconstructed our view of pre-colonial New England. He dismissed entirely the received history that portrayed pre-colonial America as an uninhabited pristine wilderness. In the process he gave Native Americans agency, and forever blurred the line between humans and nature. Since Changes it has become impossible to realistically think about humans as distinct from the “environment.”

Small handedness is a complex problem that cannot be solved in the space of a few paragraphs. Moreover, the severity of this problem has increased over time. Since the invention of the piano circa 1700, the keys have increased not only in width but also in length. The height of the ebonies over the whites and the depth of the keystroke have also increased, along with the heaviness of the action. Because these developments present formidable challenges for small-handed players, there is a need for heightened awareness concerning their specialized technical problems.

This article contends that as conditions worsen in Papua New Guinea's urban areas, it is apparent that the escalating crime and violence associated with rascal gangs are creating new rules of authority. The cumulative effects of criminal activities associated with gangs are negating the existing social order, spreading fear deep within civil society. In so doing, these activities deliver yet another blow to the legitimacy of the state. Continuous migration and the concomitant expansion of the newly urbanized population are defining a new urban landscape. On The Location Of The Proto-Oceanic Homeland, John Edward Terrell, Terry L. Hunt, Joel Bradshaw

The linguist Malcolm Ross has advanced a series of inferences pointing to somewhere in the Bismarck Archipelago as the probable "homeland" in the Pacific of the Oceanic or Eastern Austronesian languages. This conclusion is not the only one that can be reached based on current linguistic evidence and inference. Reviewing why he has singled out the Bismarck Archipelago as the homeland is advisable, for Ross's deductions have been seen as substantial support for associating proto-Oceanic with what some archaeologists have characterized as the "Lapita cultural complex."
