"Arbeit Macht Frei," which is translated, "Work Will Make You Free," is a surreal drama that sporadically and without regard to traditional chronological order spans the years of 1931-1947 in Nazi Germany. It is many stories of humanity and its strengths and weaknesses, its triumphs and atrocities, melded into theatrical representation as men and women who are interred in a concentration camp unwillingly build the walls that hold them under Nazi oppression. Still, there is some confusion in our field about what action research is, how it is done, and whether or not it is a legitimate form of academic research. The University of Weissnichtwo, situated on the shores of Lake Wobegon, has received national attention for its championship horseshoe team, but little notice has been given to its success in providing training in English for the international students who have flocked to the campus. These students have not been attracted by the university's academic programs; its most prestigious program, research into cold-climate flax production, has little applicability in Africa, Central America, or Southeast Asia, which supply a full 20 percent of the university's entire student body.

Beliefs About Learning Efl: A Study Of Thai Female High School Students, Ania Saorin Iborra, Miguel F. Ruiz Garrido

This research describes beliefs about learning English as a foreign language of Thai female high school students and discusses the potential impact of these beliefs on students' expectations and strategies in English language learning. Four aspects of beliefs were studied: beliefs about the difficulty of English language learning, beliefs about foreign language aptitude, beliefs about the nature of language learning, and beliefs about communicative strategies. Questionnaires, adapted from BALLI (Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory), were used to collect the data. In addition, descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Though the primary goal of teaching is to have students experience the use of language, it is often detrimental if the class overemphasizes rote learning, especially for lower motivated students. Most language classes suffer from this mode of teaching as it creates tension in class and also a great deal of boredom. This may lead to negative feelings about language learning and in turn hinder learning.

Self-Evaluation Of Language Skills And Non-Linguistic Factors Through Www And E-Mail Tasks, Kanchana Prapphal

This article aims at studying students' self-evaluation regarding their language skills and non-linguistic factors, i.e. cognitive skills, affect and IT knowledge in performing net tasks. Collaborative learning through the use of web sites and e-mail was tried out with twenty-five first year Engineering students at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, Thailand in June 1998. The study was repeated in the same year with thirty-two first year Pharmaceutical Science students of the same institute to obtain valid and reliable conclusions. The analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data shows positive feedback of employing two net tasks to supplement the regular English courses.

This paper examines the roles, both theoretical and applied, which corpora1 play in the field of translation. The main emphasis of the paper is on the use of corpora evidence in applied translation studies, which include the teaching of translation in translator training and in foreign language learning. The paper also looks at the use of corpora as valuable resources for translators. Different types of corpora and their applications are reviewed in detail. In the end, the paper discusses the key success factors of corpus-driven translation.

There have been many studies of Genre Analysis justifying the pedagogical implications of the Discourse Analysis system in the ESP classroom. Most of them have focused on research articles, medical texts, legislative documents and business correspondence, but little has been done about tourist texts. How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …
