Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods Jan 1998

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. These texts exemplify technical writing …

Florence Nightingale's Autobiographical Notes: A Critical Edition Of Bl Add. 45844 (England), Heather Kelly Jan 1998

Florence Nightingale's Autobiographical Notes: A Critical Edition Of Bl Add. 45844 (England), Heather Kelly

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The following thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work study of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) and the mountain of writing she left at her death. It provides, for the first time, a critical edition of British Museum MS BL Add 45844, ff.1 to 242. This manuscript contains 319 of Nightingale's extant personal notes, which she made between approximately 1860 and 1902. They range in length from a few words on a scrap of paper to full pages of her reflections. They are reproduced in this edition in the same format in which they appear in the manuscript. I have presented …

Discursive Departures: A Reading Paradigm Affiliated With Feminist, Lesbian, Aesthetic And Queer Practices (With Reference To Woolf, Stein And H.D.) (Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, Hilda Doolittle), Tamara Ann Ramsay

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In her conclusion to Bodies That Matter Judith Butler posits that “if the power of discourse to produce that which it names is linked with the question of performativity, then the performative is one domain in which power acts as discourse" (225). In this thesis I will adopt theories of the performative, as a metadiscursive mode of analysis, to allow me to articulate some of the ways in which reading is regulated by formations of discourse and power. I will argue that if reading is considered as a performative process then different paradigms of reading will name, and consequently produce, …

War And State Collapse: The Case Of Sierra Leone, Lansana Gberie Jan 1998

War And State Collapse: The Case Of Sierra Leone, Lansana Gberie

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the crises of war and state collapse in the West African state of Sierra Leone, which has been devastated by a civil rebellion which began ostensibly as armed incursions from neighbouring war-torn Liberia in 1991. It critically examines current literature on the crises, including Robert Kaplan's use of the country as a case study for his views on the "coming anarchy" , and concludes that the dynamics of the country’s collapse are far less mysterious and more pedestrian than the spurious environmental and cultural essentialism which Kaplan ascribes to it. The thesis argues that the failure of …

To Close With And Destroy: The Experience Of Canloan Officers In The North West European Campaign, 1944-1945 (World War Ii), Brian G. Rawding Jan 1998

To Close With And Destroy: The Experience Of Canloan Officers In The North West European Campaign, 1944-1945 (World War Ii), Brian G. Rawding

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since the end of the Second World War the relative performance between the Allied and German Army during the North West European Campaign has become the subject of extended debate. In almost every instance, however, academics have preferred to determine conclusions without extensive examination of the soldier’s experience. This thesis is an attempt to help redress this discrepancy. Through the experiences of Canloan officers serving with the Second British Army, it is evident that the tactical reality was often more complex than has been accepted This is illuminated through the fact that the conditions of service both prior and after …

Tactical Air Power In The Normandy Campaign: The Role Of 83 Group (France), Christopher Robert Evans Jan 1998

Tactical Air Power In The Normandy Campaign: The Role Of 83 Group (France), Christopher Robert Evans

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

There is now over a half century of historiography regarding tactical air power in the Normandy campaign in the Second World War. Within this body of material there exists two schools of thought; by far the largest and most popular is that which argues tactical air power was effective, even decisive, in winning the campaign, primarily in the role of ‘tank-buster’. A more moderate school has attempted to refine this and instead argue that tactical air power, while effective, was not decisive, and contributed to the campaign by producing a negative ‘morale effect’ on the enemy. ln each case the …

Gender Differences And Similarities In Moral Orientations: A Narrative Approach To Moral Socialization Within The Family, Susan M. Hilbers Jan 1998

Gender Differences And Similarities In Moral Orientations: A Narrative Approach To Moral Socialization Within The Family, Susan M. Hilbers

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Some research suggests that adults as parents, in particular, may orient their moral reasoning and socialization of children differentially by gender (Lollis, Ross, & Leroux, 1996; Pratt, Amold, & Hilbers, 1998; Pratt, Golding, Hunter, & Sampson, 1988). The present study investigates the extent to which mothers and fathers differ in their moral orientations with respect to socializing young children, specifically in their use of a narrative or storytelling mode. The present study also examines the extent to which gender of the child influences the orientation of parents’ socialization narratives told to and about their young children. Thirty married couples, whose …

Hazardous Waste Determination And Government Enforcement Actions In The Resource Conservation And Recovery Act And The Law No. 24051: Comparison Between The United States And Argentina, Eduardo Jose Conghos

LLM Theses and Essays

The incremental generation and disposal of hazardous waste, causing severe environmental pollution, has become one the world’s most important ecological problems starting with the Stockholm Conference in 1972. This paper examines two legislative reactions to pollution caused by hazardous wastes in the United States, under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act 1976 (RCRA), and Argentina, in Law No. 24051. This paper makes a comparative analysis of the material provisions of both the RCRA and the Law with emphasis on the tools and actions provided for the enforcement of the RCRA and the Law. The paper concludes that the RCRA and …
