Poetry For Young Adults: A Textual Analysis Of Poems By Mel Glenn And Paul Janeczko, Lisa Pope

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalent characteristics and elements of young adult poetry by examining a random sample of poems by Mel Glenn and Paul Janeczko. The characteristics and elements include themes, subjects, and other items of apparent relevance to teenagers' lives.

Because poems are the data being studied, a qualitative approach is utilized. More specifically, textual analysis is employed because this type of analysis is focused upon text.

The findings show that both sets of poetry contain similar elements and characteristics. All poems studied are of high poetic merit, contain imagery, are relatively simple, and …

Ella Fitzgerald, American jazz vocalist, had an extreme impact on the world of musicians and singers during her lifetime. Her influence is still felt today, as her recordings live on as a tribute to her lifelong commitment to her art. Most jazz vocalists have been inspired by Fitzgerald because of her versatility as a performer, her presentation of material, her scat singing, and her vocal musicianship. This thesis explores three aspects of Fitzgerald and her art. The first gives background on jazz history which makes it possible to place Ella Fitzgerald into the development of jazz. This study looks at Galatians 3. 15-18 by entering the scholarly conversation of J. Louis Martyn and James Dunn: 1) evaluating their claims on the issue of 'continuity' and 'discontinuity' as it is adjudicated in Galatians, 2) allowing questions to emerge from this analysis, and 3) letting the sounding of this dialogue bring forth a new exegetical voice to speak about the original text. Dickens' 'Bad Men': Representations Of Elder Women In Dombey And Son And In Victorian Reality, Jennifer M. White

The paper focuses on elder women as "moral scapegoats" and grotesque figures in Charles Dickens' Dombey and Son. It also analyzes representations of younger women, focusing on constraints they face as they choose marriage or "spinsterhood." The essay draws connection between Dickens' characters and modern portrayals of elder women. My analysis is grounded in research including nineteenth-century primary documents (medical writings, essays, journals, newspapers), relevant scholarly works, modern texts, and novels preceding and contemporary with Dombey and Son. A great American author, Jack Kerouac, loved the Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism, which influenced fifteen years of his writing career. The theory of Zen Buddhism taught him what was in and out of human control as well as the true essence of nature. Kerouac reflected on and described his daily life of Zen Buddhism in his novels, and Zen Buddhism certainly became his spiritual inner home for fifteen years. However, searching for a true spirituality never settled him down emotionally; therefore his loss of faith in Zen Buddhism demolished his inner spiritual home, and his struggle began. The following thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work study of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) and the mountain of writing she left at her death. It provides, for the first time, a critical edition of British Museum MS BL Add 45844, ff.1 to 242. This manuscript contains 319 of Nightingale's extant personal notes, which she made between approximately 1860 and 1902. They range in length from a few words on a scrap of paper to full pages of her reflections. They are reproduced in this edition in the same format in which they appear in the manuscript. This thesis exhibition consists of a series of urban landscape paintings. These paintings attempt to explore the issues of transition and flux within the modern environment on the edge of Lincoln as the city expands into rural areas. The paintings were all executed in acrylic and comprise a broad range of sizes on both hardboard and wooden panels. The process by which they were conceived was an evolutionary one that began with the analysis of a specific site that is not far from my home and which I see on a daily basis. In "Web Taxonomy for Issue 8", by Jan Ekenberg, ten different net artworks from different artists are presented. Using the icon key, audiences can view works in different categories and in different combinations such as participatory, information mapping, ironic/satiric, collaborative, poetic, formalist, documentational, narrative, and unintentional works. Artworks that can be viewed include "Addfield" by Dimos Dimmitriou, "Desktop Is" by Alexi Shulgin, and "The Poem* Navigator" by Merel Mirage. In part of the three categories, participatory, information mapping, and documentational, "Desktop Is" is a piece that explores the computer in itself.
