The concept of a Servant Leader is fascinating because it seems to be an oxymoron. How can one be a servant if they are to lead? This seems even stranger when placed in the context of military leaders. Robert Greenleaf argued that "The servant-leader is servant first. A Rhetorical Comparison Of Spurgeon, Newman, And Macdonald, Robert Ellison

This is the first book to employ the methods of orality-literacy scholarship in the study of nineteenth-century preaching. The debate over whether sermons should be read from the manuscript or delivered extempore is analyzed, and the Victorian practices of attending preaching services on Sunday and reading and writing about sermons throughout the week is discussed. The second part of the book analyses the rhetoric of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, John Henry Newman, and George MacDonald, and ends with a comparison of these three preachers' sermons on the death and resurrection of Lazarus.

The Victorian Pulpit: Spoken And Written Sermons In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Robert Ellison

The Victorian Pulpit is the first book to study the nineteenth-century British sermon from the perspective of orality-literacy theory (the branch of literary and rhetorical inquiry concerned with the differences between spoken and written language). Building on the groundbreaking work of Milman Parry in the 1920s Albert B. Lord and Eric A. Havelock in the 1960s and 1970s, and especially Walter J. Ong in the 1970s and 1980s, orality-literacy studies had become an active, wide-ranging discipline by the 1990s, the time the book was conceived and written.

1928年爆發的“革命文學”論爭，在中國現代文學史和政治史上都有巨大的意義和深遠的影響。它標誌了左翼作家直接參與、干預以至控制現代中國文壇的開始。毛澤東便曾經高度評價過這時期在文化戰線上取得的勝利，這說明了為甚麼“革命文學論爭”在大陸出版的文學史著作及研究中佔了這樣重要的地位。

正由於這個緣故，有關“革命文學論爭”的論述為數不少，但因為政治及意識形態的原因，很多研究文章不但不能解決問題，而且往往引起新的爭論，所以“革命文學論爭”還是有值得深入探究的地方。本文會集中討論一個問題：為甚麼魯迅會成為革命文學派的攻擊目標？

抒情與敘述 : 淺論張愛玲與西西的小說世界, Wai Ying Chan

敘述(narrative)與抒情(lyric)具有不同的本質。抒情藝術在中國文化中一直佔著重要的位置。相對於抒情本質的含混曖昧，敘述文學須更直接擁抱“整體”的問題。前者基於“內化”而後者則是見諸“外化”。張愛玲的小説擅於表現平凡人的悲喜，並常給評為“華麗與蒼涼”，一方面有著“貴族”的內涵，另一方面卻是平民化的表現；西西小說則以多樣化的表現手法見稱，其敘述的方式有時更能保持一種“童稚”的特質，這與張愛玲的看重人情世故顯然大不一樣；但二人同樣以心平氣和的筆法寫及生活中的形形式式，而且基本以城市作為們故事的背景。本文嘗試從兩位無論在地域上以至處身的年代都有若干前後關聯的作家的作品，探討們筆下故 事的敘述與抒情對照的特色。

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight

This paper is part of a larger project in which I make a case for the central importance of the problem of free will to considerations of Chinese modernity. I begin by distinguishing between two key aspects of modernity and the Enlightenment: (1) subjectivity, or the realm of consciousness including the capacity for critical reason, and (2) agency, or acting on the world outside consciousness in a way that makes a difference. I then suggest that neglecting the development of rational agency cripples the force of the commitment to human freedom that drives the project of modernity. In calling attention …
