Cognitive And Affective Learning In The Basic Course: Effects Of Delivery Format, Immediacy, And Communication Apprehension, Susan J. Messman, Jennifer Jones-Corley, David Mezzacappa, Deborah J. Crusan

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

A quasi-experimental design was used to investigate changes in learning outcomes for students enrolled in large-lecture/break-out sections versus in self-contained sections of the basic communication course.More precisely, the study explores the relationship between communication apprehension, immediacy and learning outcomes for the two class formats.Results indicate that students' cognitive learning outcomes are slightly higher in the large-lecture/break-out sections versus self-contained sections. In addition, affective learning decreases for all students from the first day of class and slightly more for students in the large-lecture/break-out sections. However, when the teacher is perceived as highly immediate, there is no difference in formats. (Contains 5 …

Book Review: Phillip Schaff. Portrait Of An Immigrant Theologian, Barbara Dobschütz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Living in the light of a larger world experience, Philip Schaff, a Swiss educated in Germany and living in America, became one of the nineteenth century's foremost church historians. As a biblical scholar and theologian, Schaff became an advocate of the Mercersburg theology or "mediating evangelical theology." Schaff's intellectual and theological development, Gary Pranger's recent portrait argues, was formed in the context of an European-American exchange. Schaff's immigrant experience also provided the basis on which his later achievements as an advocate for ecumenical cooperation would become possible. Furthermore, Pranger's thesis contends that Schaff's own experience mirrored the nineteenth century world …

For a conference discussion of textual bibliographers and rare book librarians on the topic "Who needs textual studies?," this paper examines three different appearances of Alfred Tennyson's poem "Crossing the Bar": (1) a manuscript facsimile, (ii) its reuse as a hymn and in a giftbook; and (iii) the paperback Armed Services Edition distributed to US troops overseas during World War II, and argues that with the shift from literary studies to cultural studies such later "unauthoritative texts" have a new importance for scholars and students, and deserve increased attention from bibliographers, collectors, and rare book librarians. The past five years have seen an explosion in the use of the Internet by book artists both as a tool for communication and as a means of publicizing their work. Not quite as rapidly, but steadily nevertheless some formerly traditional book artists have left the confines and limitations of hot type on damp paper to explore the creation of "books" which can only exist in digital form. Cattle, Environment, And Economic Change: A History Of Cherry County, Nebraska’S Cattle Industry, From Earliest Times To 1940, Gail Lorna Didonato

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A modern cattle industry in Cherry County, Nebraska, developed as challenges of land use and pressures of economic change demanded new and flexible adaptation to the unique environment. Located in the Sandhills, a region only opened to legal white settlement after Indian removal in 1878, the area passed through phases of occupation. Open-range cattlemen drawn by lucrative local markets gave way to struggles over land use between farmers and ranchers. Early twentieth century legislation, the 1904 Kinkaid Act, designed to promote farm settlement, in the end, benefited ranchers the most. As the wedge to gain legal access to land ownership, …
