Review Of Sharon L. Jansen, Dangerous Talk And Strange Behavior: Women And Popular Resistance To The Reforms Of Henry Viii, Carole Levin
Review Of Sharon L. Jansen, Dangerous Talk And Strange Behavior: Women And Popular Resistance To The Reforms Of Henry Viii, Carole Levin
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Sharon L. Jansen's study of women and popular resistance in the reign of Henry VIII is an important work that breaks new ground and will be of value to a wide range of scholars. It is scrupulously well researched and shows a thorough grounding in the secondary literature on the politics of early Tudor England, women's history, and feminist theory. Jansen focuses on four women, all of whom were executed for treason in the reign of Henry VIII: Elizabeth Wood, Margaret Cheyne, Elizabeth Barton, and Mabel Brigge. Yet none of these women had posed a direct, physical threat to the …

The Colonelette
On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Joseph Conrad And The Ghost Of Oscar Wilde, Richard Ruppel
Joseph Conrad And The Ghost Of Oscar Wilde, Richard Ruppel
English Faculty Articles and Research
"Conrad walks a similar tight- rope in his exploration of the homosocial continuum--pushing out the boundaries a little and then pulling back to accommodate a conventional audience that would have been hostile to a more overt exploration. In other words, Conrad could only press his artistic investigations of the potential relationships between men so far because those investigations were threatened by the ghost of Oscar Wilde."
