In the contentious religious and political climate of the German empire between 1555 and 1630, rulers of Lutheran, Reformed, and Catholic cities and territories all agreed that "Jewish blasphemies" were intolerable in a Christian state, yet Jewish printing came to be both legally and politically feasible during these years. This essay examines the German imperial laws that governed the book trade, the religious and political factors that rulers were obliged to weigh when considering whether to allow Jewish printing in their domains, and the policies and safeguards that they could adopt to attenuate these potential risks. In this paper, we analyse the portrayal of Singapore in local children's literature and seek to understand why such a portrayal was prominent, and to what effect. We argue that this literature is characterized by a nostalgic recollection of past times and places. This emergence of the past as an important concern in Singapore is not limited to the literary arena, but reflects a larger condition: a broader adult yearning to transcend the constrictions of present place and time. We suggest that this nostalgia has surfaced because of the phenomenal changes in Singapore, which have caused people to come face …

For the ADE meeting last October, I was asked to comment on the Hemingway Collection from the perspective of an archivist and a curator. The trouble is, the Hemingway Collection is, at this point, thoroughly uninteresting-archivally speaking. Basic concepts of archival theory such as provenance or original order, respect du fonds, apply either trivially (we know precisefly where these papers came from) or not at all (these papers never had an original order). In terms of archival practice, the Hemingway Collection at one time posed a genuine challenge, simply because it did lack any order. The first curator, Jo August …

Arthur Stanley Link, Director and Editor of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Emeritus and George Henry Davis '08 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University, died on March 26 at the Bermuda Village Health Center in Advance, North Carolina. The cause of death was lung cancer; he was seventy-seven years old. Link was one of the founders and the first president of the Association for Documentary Editing, 1979-80, and remained an enthusiastic supporter and adviser to subsequent officers of the ADE as well as to editors of the many projects which have developed under its aegis over the years.

This thesis examines the areas that determine what characteristics produce an expert Web developer. The focus of the study is in the following three areas: creativity, construction of meaning, and problem solving.

To date, no other formal study of this type has been reported. We know much about the World Wide Web itself, but nothing about the people who create the Web sites.

This work examines the origins of our existing principles of communication to observe patterns of language and their causes. The study surveys twenty-five hundred-years of Western language and writing and its evolution through cultural interaction. The nature of this evolution is the topic of this thesis. There are four periods of time that are studied for their influence on language and writing: the Late Classical Period, the Early and Late Medieval Period, the Early Renaissance, and the Twentieth Century. The study revealed that language and writing have always had a significant metacognitive function within Western culture. Language and writing have …

In 1996, engineer and author Samuel Florman asked why engineering and technology had been represented only lightly in literature. From a mere handful of books dealing with this topic, he named The Control of Nature (1989), by John McPhee, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974), by Robert Pirsig, and The Soul of a New Machine (1981), by Tracy Kidder, as being among the best examples of a literary expression of engineering. My graduate work, culminating in Spira Mirabilis, my final thesis project, has been about a search for simplicity. What I have discovered along the way is complexity. In searching for a fundamental principle that generates a complex form, I discovered an apparently simple form that is, rather, a consequence of complex relationships. By creating a work that is grounded on a fundamental, universal principle, I hoped to evoke a subliminal or other-than-conscious response that would effect a transformation in the viewer.
