Three of Cather’s works, Sapphira and the Slave Girl, The professor’s House, and Shadows on the Rock distinguish two civilizations in North America. This thesis examines the mental and physical abuses of African American slavery imposed on its victims in Sapphira and the Slave Girl. In The Professor’s House, the abuse and neglect with which America has treated Native Americans is revealed. Shadows on the Rock demonstrates the cultural superiority and cohesiveness of the French settlement described. In the works, Cather creates powerful contrasts between the American and Canadian societies within the New World. Her comparisons suggest that …

By the time the remaining riders rolled down the Champs-Elysees Sunday afternoon, this year's Tour de France had become the Tour de Drugs, an international pharmacology festival. What should have been the continuation of the French national celebration over the World Cup, turned into a shameful display of rule violations, poor sportsmanship, and police tactics worthy of a banana republic. Some writers were calling it the Tour de Farce.

Being away for a month leaves one with a sense of having missed any number of important or semi-significant events. Upon further reflection it is apparent that most of the time in the world of sport it is "deja vu" all over again. While in England the World Cup came to an end, including the tragic (to the English) Argentinean victory on penalty kicks, which sent the lads home; Wimbledon had a more satisfying set of results for English tastes; and the Tour de Drugs was just getting underway

I hope this study, however preliminary it might appear, will provide a sound first step toward developing our self-understanding as Latter-day Saints of the history of Book of Mormon use in the twentieth century and the phenomenal increase in understanding, appreciation, and study that has taken place over the last three to four decades. This study may also offer one useful perspective for the gradually emerging history of cultural Mormonism and its antipathy to the Book of Mormon. The Melodies Of Francis Poulenc: A Selective Musico-Literary Study, Elizabeth Nolan

This dissertation examines the melodies, or art songs, of the twentieth-century French composer Francis Poulenc in relation to the artistic milieu of his time. The study focuses on prosody and the key role of wordsetting in Poulenc’s compositional technique, with particular reference to the composer’s settings of contemporary poets. The dissertation’s central section comprises a musico-literary analysis of four representative song cycles by Poulenc, set to verses by poets with whom he experienced a particular creative affinity: Guillaume Appollinaire, Max Jacob, Louise de Vilmorin and Paul Eluard. Ghost stories are an ingrained part of most cultures because, typically, humans must be forced to confront those elements of their individual and communal past that they would prefer to ignore. Accordingly, ghosts have embodied weaknesses and hidden evils that must be assimilated and transcended, and writers have embroidered a variety of subtexts upon the traditional fabric of ghostlore. Specifically, both William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Toni Morrison's Beloved employ ghosts as symbols of man's archetypal desire to hide his past.
