Harding And Kerrigan Followup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Winning isn't everything, its the only thing. The words of course of that great American philosopher Vince Lombardi. I was reminded of them once again this week as the bizarre story of the attack on Nancy Kerrigan unfolded. And as it unfolded the nature of this commentary changed dramatically.

Sugar Bowl Fans, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is fascinating to be in the middle of a sporting event and to be surrounded by thousands of people who are rabidly involved, and to be in a position in which you are essentially indifferent to the outcome. The most startling thing about this experience is the realization that human beings could get worked into a frenzy by something of such little significance, while knowing that you yourself would be in the same state if it was your favorite team that was involved. In some ways it is a sobering experience.

Standing On Unstable Grounds: A Reexamination Of The Wlbt-Tv Case, Steven Classen Jan 1994

Standing On Unstable Grounds: A Reexamination Of The Wlbt-Tv Case, Steven Classen

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

In 1962, the "Jackson Nonviolent Movement" began to change business as usual in Mississippi. The upstart organization, comprised largely of local teens, targeted prominent Jackson businesses, demanding that basic employment and consumer rights be extended to African Americans. They insisted that the segregation, degradation, and physical abuse grimly familiar to black consumers in the white marketplace be confronted and addressed. In the spring, when a pregnant African-American mother was verbally and physically assaulted by a white grocer, the Movement called a church meeting, distributed leaflets, and led a successful boycott against the store. Months later, this strategy was reemployed with …

Feature Films For Communication Courses: A Bibliography, Russell F. Proctor Ii, Scott D. Johnson

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Once upon a time, the only way to answer the question was informally; that is, by offering an opinion or directing the inquirer to someone who had experience in the area. Recently, however, the process has been formalized and expanded through various written materials. Rather than keeping lists of films in our heads, we can now refer people to articles, textbooks, and documents. The new trick is remembering the references for these works in circulation. This article is an attempt to remedy that problem. We offer here a list of resources for those who want ideas for using feature films …

Religious Orientation, Persuasion, And Communicator Style, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Using a functional approach to religion as an explanatory framework, this essay argues that a quest religious orientation is associated with particular communicator styles and with religious persuasion. The research positively associates quest religious orientation with susceptibility to religious persuasion and negatively associates it with the religious need to persuade others. The results do not generally support the relationship between a quest religious orientation and communicator styles, but the study finds partial support for the relationship between a quest religious orientation and an attentive communicator style.
