The Pavlov-Yerkes Connection: What Was Its Origin?, Randall D. Wight Jul 1993

The Pavlov-Yerkes Connection: What Was Its Origin?, Randall D. Wight

Articles

Historians of psychology traditionally acknowledge Robert Mearns Yerkes as responsible for introducing the work of Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov to American psychologists. The introduction occurred in a 1909 Psychological Bulletin paper coauthored with Harvard graduate student, Sergius Morgulls. Yet how Yerkes, who did not read Russian and who never personally used Pavlov's conditioning paradigm, came to know and appreciate Pavlov's endeavors is unclear. This paper examines how Yerkes became acquainted with salivary conditioning studies and suggests a reason why the 1909 paper was actually written.

The Effects Of Gender Of Observers And Victims On Perceptions Of Fairness In Unjust Situations., Laura Leah Josoff Apr 1993

The Effects Of Gender Of Observers And Victims On Perceptions Of Fairness In Unjust Situations., Laura Leah Josoff

Student Work

The effects of gender of observers and victims on perceptions of fairness in unjust situations were investigated. Subjects participated in group sessions and were blocked by gender and then assigned to either the disadvantaged female (read a composition concerning a femal who received poor outcomes) or disadvantaged male (read a composition concerning a male who received poor outcomes) group. After reading the composition, subjects completed a questionnaire which was related to the composition. It was expected that the perception of fairness would depend upon the gender of the perceiver as well as the gender of the victim. Specifically, females would ...

The Use Of Music Therapy To Influence The Self-Confidence And Hostility Of Adolescents Who Are Sexually Abused, Joy Clendenon-Wallen Apr 1993

The Use Of Music Therapy To Influence The Self-Confidence And Hostility Of Adolescents Who Are Sexually Abused, Joy Clendenon-Wallen

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether music therapy would be an effective therapeutic medium for reducing hostility and increasing the self-confidence of sexually abused adolescents. The study utilized an experimental and control group which is unique in the sexual abuse literature. Most studies are descriptive or quasi-experimental in nature. Some of the subjects increased their self-confidence and decreased their hostility although no statistical significance was achieved for either group. This study describes the treatment problems of sexually abused adolescents and offers examples of non-confrontational and goal directed treatment strategies which can be achieved through music therapy. Music ...

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a ...

Women In Engineering: Factors Affecting Persistence And Attrition In College Majors , Kathleen Galvin Schaefers Jan 1993

Women In Engineering: Factors Affecting Persistence And Attrition In College Majors , Kathleen Galvin Schaefers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined factors related to persistence in engineering and related college majors, with attention to women's experiences. Participants were 278 upper-class undergraduates (135 women and 143 men) who as freshmen entered the college of engineering at a large midwestern university. Persisters in engineering, physical science, and mathematics were compared with those who did not persist. Participants completed a survey questionnaire, including variables predicted by self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1986), expectancy-valence theory (Vroom, 1964), and interest congruence theory (Holland, 1973). Social support/environmental barriers, grade point averages, pre-college ability, and interests also were included. Four sources of self-efficacy information (personal ...

Selected Family Therapy Outcomes With Bowen, Haley, And Satir, Joan Elizabeth Winter Jan 1993

Selected Family Therapy Outcomes With Bowen, Haley, And Satir, Joan Elizabeth Winter

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Further, what effect do traditional court services have on a similar sample of delinquent youths and their families.;A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest treated (n = 188) and comparison (n = 61) groups was employed. Independent variables included the treatment interventions ...

A Description Of The Faith Development Of Five Students Attending A Church-Related College , Dennis Alonza Haggray Jan 1993

A Description Of The Faith Development Of Five Students Attending A Church-Related College , Dennis Alonza Haggray

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed description of the perceived faith development of selected students attending a midwestern church-related college. The research question that provided direction for the study was: What do the respondents in this study say about their faith development? James Fowler's (1981) theory of faith development and his Faith Development Interview Guide (FDIG) were used to collect and analyze the data. The methods of inquiry in this study were qualitative. The primary data were generated through interviews with each of five respondents (two males and three females). Secondary data from document analysis ...

Memory Biases In Left Versus Right Implied Motion, Andrea R. Halpern, Michael H. Kelly Jan 1993

Memory Biases In Left Versus Right Implied Motion, Andrea R. Halpern, Michael H. Kelly

Faculty Journal Articles

People remember moving objects as having moved farther along in their path of motion than is actually the case; this is known as representational momentum (RM). Some authors have argued that RM is an internalization of environmental properties such as physical momentum and gravity. Five experiments demonstrated that a similar memory bias could not have been learned from the environment. For right-handed Ss, objects apparently moving to the right engendered a larger memory bias in the direction of motion than did those moving to the left. This effect, clearly not derived from real-world lateral asymmetries, was relatively insensitive to changes ...
