The focus of this .study is to note and measure any discernible changes within the character of scientific publications in Germany after the elevation of the National Socialists to power. To detect any such changes, a classification scheme was established to categorize formal papers appearing in six journals between 1930-1936. The results are subject to variance as the journals examined did not fare identically. Certain journals declined in output while others prospered. Suggestion~ of ideological tampering remain largely absent. Indeed, the wide latitude of interests expressed by these papers suggest a preference on the part of German scientists and editors …

The concept behind the fort of San Fernando de Omoa grew from the unrest caused by pirates along the coasts of Central America in the 17th and 18th centuries. The poor condition of the Caribbean defenses resulted partly because Spain did not know how to deal with the pirates. The latter did not have very much strength, and changed tactics as often as the Spaniards did. Several military strategists, including the Count of Aranda, Juan Bautista Antonelli, and apparently, Luis D!ez Navarro, recommended forts--in the case of this study, San Fernando de Omoa--to serve as bases and safe ports from …

The Winnebago are a Siouan-speaking tribe which historically occupied eastern and southern Wisconsin. This thesis uses their culture and history as a background for telling the story of the removal of the Wisconsin remnant in 1873-74. This non-treaty-abiding faction of the tribe was forcibly taken to Nebraska where the treaty-abiding faction had a reservation.

The Wisconsin Winnebago had four reasons for resisting removal. 1) Based on their experience with prior removals, they knew that many of their children and elderly would die. 2) They feared attack by the western Sioux. 3) As woodland Indians, the Winnebago considered Wisconsin to be …

Arnulfo Arias Madrid colored the history of Panama with his eccentric, jingoistic, and often humorous escapades. His presidencies were brief, but provided a lasting influence on the country's political system.

Arias formed the first really cohesive political party, made up largely of the Panamanian middle class. The party has survived more than four decades, unlike any other political party in that country. It has, however, changed its name with the times. Arias ostensibly based his party on long-term national goals, but once in off ice sought to advance his personal interests and to centralize power. In so doing he deprived. …

In 1817 a little-known group of German Separatists fled religious persecution in Wurttemberg and took up residence in America. Eventually known as the Zoarites, they founded a religious commune in the northeastern Ohio wilderness in 1819, which they called Zoar, and continued to live the common life there until 1898, at which time they voted to disband.

What sort of religious beliefs led them to endure persecution in Germany and then to establish a religious commune in Ohio? This study was undertaken in part to answer just such questions. Relying primarily on the unpublished, largely untranslated discourses of J. M. …

The third century A.D. marked a period of growth on Roman urbanization in northern Britain, while in the rest of the empire towns and cities were being abandoned. Although this growth of urban centers brought peace and prosperity to a once troubled area, there is no written record that documents this success. Ancient authors considered Britain a rebellious province and unsafe to visit, thus limiting the information they recorded. This thesis examines the historical literature regarding the Oneida Community (1848-81) from the society's conceptual beginnings in the 1830s to the present time. After an overview of the antebellum communitarian movement in the United States, a detailed description of the Oneida Community, one of America's most prominent nineteenth-century utopian experiments, is presented.

During the years 1935 to 1943 photographers employed by the Farm Security Administration documented America struggling through the Great Depression and its subsequent entry into World war II. Originally conceived as a way to provide information about problems in the rural areas of the country and to help sell the New Deal. The director, Roy Stryker, transformed the project into more than just a bureaucratic exercise in propaganda. Instead, Stryker consciously attempted to create a photographic portrait of the American culture.

A case study method is used to examine the role played by the United States Navy in bringing about the Second Cuban Intervention of 1906-1909. The 1906 American navy had a distinct lack of centralized direction during the September crisis in Cuba. As a consequence, initiative in the crisis passed to the several naval officers representing the United States in Cuba at the time. These officers acted in consonance with the navy's own institutional agendas and contrary to the objectives of the Theodore Roosevelt administration. Robert Whitehead represented Nelson County in the Virginia General Assembly from 1942 until his death in 1960. He was widely recognized as the leading opponent to the dominant "Byrd Organization" in the state legislature. In this capacity, he often acted as a one-man party in opposition to the organization's financial, political, educational and public services policies. A gifted orator and financial expert, Whitehead was often mentioned as a potential candidate for governor although he was never able to commit himself to a state-wide race.

The Soviet Union attacked- and defeated Japanese forces in Northeast Asia in the final days of the Second World War, and 2,100,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians suddenly fell into the hands of the Red Army. This thesis examines the experiences of Japanese in Soviet custody, efforts to obtain their release, and their eventual return to Japan. Repatriation of civilians from Soviet-controlled areas was slow, and military personnel were taken to the USSR for use as forced labor for several years. The purpose of this thesis was to trace the pattern of Mormon immigration from Europe and the eastern United States during the decade of the 1860s. Although the initial Mormon migration of 1847 has recieved extensive attention from historians, later organized movements into the Great Basin by immigrant Mormon groups has remained virtually untouched. This thesis traces the formation, organization, and implementation of the church train emigration from Europe and the eastern United States. Also, it details its organization from the church hierarchy, as well as the extensive participation by the Mormon population as a whole.

With the onset of the information age, archivists are more frequently placed in professional situations where they must work with automated systems to manage the records in their custody. They must acquire new skills to use this technology, including system analysis, system planning, and the principles of computer operation. An area that is frequently neglected, however, is that of developing and maintaining in-house project documentation for systems once equipment is in place and implementation has begun. Marshall, Michigan, once known as "patent medicine town," had over fifty medicine companies. The medicine industry flourished in America until the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 regulated the trade. Marshall provides a microcosm of the industry.

The H. A. Peterman Co. (1870-1890) and Sharpsteen's Family Medicines (1873-1950) introduced Marshall to many techniques, from mail-order marketing to medicine shows. The Voltaic Belt Co. OSSIES) , Chrystal’s Electric Belts (1893-1905), L. F. Page Co. (1891— 1901), and H. A. Horton (1916-1928) sold remedies for "lost manhood." Success of the F. A. Stuart Co. A comparative study of the cycles of military-political power in El Salvador between 1931 and 1979 indicates that the country was convulsed six times by political struggle. This paper is a study of American women's intellectual history in the period 1770-1815. My aim is to develop a coherent conception of women's moral point of view as it is presented in prescriptive literature, political tracts, and women's own writing. Because of the nature of my goal, I will attempt to glean women's ideas out of the extant primary source material of this period. As the aim of this study implies the existence of a prescribed point of view which women were to share, I will use numerous examples from the genre of prescriptive literature.

"Student activism" is a commonly used-and somewhat loaded-phrase. In the mind of the modern observer, the phrase inspires images of peace signs, love beads, sit-ins, and Kent State. Student activism, however, has not always been true to this imagery. The tradition of student groups devoted to political, ideological ends extends back to the early years of the twentieth century. Warren Stone Snow was an early convert to the LDS church who during the Church's first four decades was often involved in defensive roles as Mormonism encountered various conflicts on the American frontier. While he protected the lives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and defended Illinois Saints from houseburning mobs and took a leading role in the Battle of Nauvoo, his greatest defensive contributions took place after the Mormons settled in Utah. This thesis focuses on the reaction of the German bishops to the Reichskonkordat, which was negotiated between the Vatican and the German government from April 10, 1933 to September 10, 1933. The paper attempts to show that the views of the episcopate were their own and did not always correspond to those of the Vatican. While secondary sources offer an important supplement, the account relies mostly on published documents. In particular, the Catholic Church documents compiled from the Reichskonkordat negotiations and the correspondence of the German bishops during the year 1933 were used most extensively.
