The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression And Rhythmic Competency: A Correlational Study, Michael J. Migliore
The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression And Rhythmic Competency: A Correlational Study, Michael J. Migliore
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between a test of rhythmic competency and the psychomotor retardation subtest of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Twenty-six endogenously depressed inpatient adults participated in a medication-free pretest. Posttests were administered When a) values reached therapeutic blood levels and b) subjects were clinically observed to have improved. Results demonstrated modest correlations between the Hamilton scale and several subtests of the Rhythmic Competency measure; however, based on this study, the Rhythmic Competency Test could not be recommended as an indicator of psychomotor retardation.
A Study Of The Relationship Between Church Sponsored K-12 Education And Church Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Warren Earl Minder
A Study Of The Relationship Between Church Sponsored K-12 Education And Church Membership In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Warren Earl Minder
Dissertations
Church growth continues to be a concern for religious sects. Writers on church growth hold that all the various ministries of the church must assist the church in accomplishing church growth.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not persons who had been students in the Adventist school system had greater probability of joining the church and staying in the church than those who did not attend an Adventist school but were from homes where at least one parent was a Seventh-day Adventist.
There were two dependent variables in the study: initial baptism to join the church …

Relationships Among Selected Reading, Linguistic, And Piagetian Tasks, Gertrude A. Terrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to determine the relationships among Piagetian levels of cognitive development, linguistic skills, and reading achievement in elementary pupils. The subjects were 212 pupils in grades K-3 at a school in Sullivan County, Tennessee. The subjects were administered conservation tests of number, quantity of matter, and length and linguistic tests of syllabication, synthesis of phonemes into words, and analysis of words into phonemes by the researcher. Scores on pre-reading skills from the reading subtests of the Metropolitan Readiness Tests and scores on meaning vocabulary, reading comprehension, and word study skills from the Stanford Achievement Test …
Concrete Poetry: The Influence Of Design And Marketing On Aesthetics, Tineke Bierma
Concrete Poetry: The Influence Of Design And Marketing On Aesthetics, Tineke Bierma
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the past and present of concrete poetry with the purpose of finding out whether concrete poetry is still being produced in its original form, or whether it has changed.
Concrete poets were not the first ones to create picture poems and similar texts. In chapter I an overview of earlier picture poetry is given. It and other precursors of concrete poetry are discussed and their possible contributions evaluated.
Chapters II and III deal with the definition of concrete poetry of the mid-fifties and sixties (pure, classic c.p.). They focus primarily on German, Austrian and Swiss poets. Manifestos …

Hermeneutical Perspectives Of Biblical Typology, Deomar Roos
Hermeneutical Perspectives Of Biblical Typology, Deomar Roos
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The presentation and development of the argumentation of this thesis follow a simple, logical and somewhat natural and progressive flow. The preliminary considerations of Chapter One go over a brief survey of the history of typological interpretation, focus on the notion of sensus plenior, and summarize the basic approaches to typology. Chapter Two delineates the necessary distinction between typology and allegory. The typology of the Old Testament, its terminology and hermeneutical implications, is discussed in Chapter Three. Chapter Four has the same topics but relates to the New Testament area. And all the emergent hermeneutical perspectives raised by the discussion …
Portrait Of The Scientific Journals In Germany: 1930-1936, Paul Eugene Gesling Jr.
Portrait Of The Scientific Journals In Germany: 1930-1936, Paul Eugene Gesling Jr.
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The focus of this .study is to note and measure any discernible changes within the character of scientific publications in Germany after the elevation of the National Socialists to power. To detect any such changes, a classification scheme was established to categorize formal papers appearing in six journals between 1930-1936. The results are subject to variance as the journals examined did not fare identically. Certain journals declined in output while others prospered. Suggestion~ of ideological tampering remain largely absent. Indeed, the wide latitude of interests expressed by these papers suggest a preference on the part of German scientists and editors …
Living Reflections, Lorane Leavy
Living Reflections, Lorane Leavy
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The following works fall into three general categories--non-fiction, fiction, and the psychological analysis of this prose.
Three styles of non-fiction are represented: Creative non-fiction in which the events from a life experience are set forth in a narrative style; magazine journalism which incorporates the research, interviewing skills and informal yet accurate representation attendant to the genre; and a combination of reportorial journalism and the essay forms utilized to recount appropriately a highly personal event while maintaining the· distance necessary to inform and educate.
The short story meets the criteria for form and time frame and addresses a current issue.

John Mcleod Campbell And Thomas Erskine: Scottish Exponents Of Righteousness, Faith, And The Atonement, David P. Duffie
John Mcleod Campbell And Thomas Erskine: Scottish Exponents Of Righteousness, Faith, And The Atonement, David P. Duffie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis focuses upon the reaffirmation and clarification by two independent 19th-century theologians of certain New Testament and Reformation emphases which had become largely obscured amid the rigidities of later Calvinism. These emphases, when employed by Campbell and Erskine in their largely lay ministries, resulted in grassroots revival on the one hand, and ecclesiastic opposition on the other.
The early chapters examine the elements in Campbell's preaching which were considered heretical and which resulted in his trial and deposition from the Church of Scotland. He was faulted for preaching "universal pardon" and "assurance of faith." What he really meant by …
The Removal Of The Winnebago Indians From Wisconsin In 1873-74, Lawrence W. Onsager
The Removal Of The Winnebago Indians From Wisconsin In 1873-74, Lawrence W. Onsager
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Winnebago are a Siouan-speaking tribe which historically occupied eastern and southern Wisconsin. This thesis uses their culture and history as a background for telling the story of the removal of the Wisconsin remnant in 1873-74. This non-treaty-abiding faction of the tribe was forcibly taken to Nebraska where the treaty-abiding faction had a reservation.
The Wisconsin Winnebago had four reasons for resisting removal. 1) Based on their experience with prior removals, they knew that many of their children and elderly would die. 2) They feared attack by the western Sioux. 3) As woodland Indians, the Winnebago considered Wisconsin to be …
A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell
A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Tracing the initiation motif in Katharine Anne Porter's "Miranda stories" uncovers her maturing protagonist's search for order and personal truth. Miranda's inward journey ultimately leads not to nihilism and despair, as some critics suggest, but to an honest and courageous affirmation of the independent spirit.
Porter's fiction involving Miranda and her family background reveal varying stages of this maturing that, together with parallel theories of initiation, fall into critic Mordecai Marcus' paradigm of initiation types. The "tentative" initiation stories only brush the child Miranda's awareness and deal primarily with the external world. They include "The Circus," marking an "emotional" initiation …
The Legacy Of The Three Presidencies Of Arnulfo Arias Madrid, Sandra Blackman
The Legacy Of The Three Presidencies Of Arnulfo Arias Madrid, Sandra Blackman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Arnulfo Arias Madrid colored the history of Panama with his eccentric, jingoistic, and often humorous escapades. His presidencies were brief, but provided a lasting influence on the country's political system.
Arias formed the first really cohesive political party, made up largely of the Panamanian middle class. The party has survived more than four decades, unlike any other political party in that country. It has, however, changed its name with the times. Arias ostensibly based his party on long-term national goals, but once in off ice sought to advance his personal interests and to centralize power. In so doing he deprived. …
The Castillo De San Fernando De Omoa : The History Of A Fiasco, James L. Zackrison
The Castillo De San Fernando De Omoa : The History Of A Fiasco, James L. Zackrison
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The concept behind the fort of San Fernando de Omoa grew from the unrest caused by pirates along the coasts of Central America in the 17th and 18th centuries. The poor condition of the Caribbean defenses resulted partly because Spain did not know how to deal with the pirates. The latter did not have very much strength, and changed tactics as often as the Spaniards did. Several military strategists, including the Count of Aranda, Juan Bautista Antonelli, and apparently, Luis D!ez Navarro, recommended forts--in the case of this study, San Fernando de Omoa--to serve as bases and safe ports from …
Conceptual Frameworks As A Source Of Cultural Distinctions, Viola F. Cordova
Conceptual Frameworks As A Source Of Cultural Distinctions, Viola F. Cordova
Philosophy ETDs
The purpose of this paper is to identify the conceptual frameworks of two distinct and unrelated peoples in order to show that the source of their particular views is a result of incommensurable conceptual frameworks. The peoples that I have chosen are the Native American, primarily the Athabascan (Apache, Navajo) with whom I am most familiar, and the group that the Native American calls the "European" -- those peoples that have the roots of their ancestry in the various nations of Europe.
The Wiedergeburt In The Religion Of The Zoarites, Elizabeth Siber White
The Wiedergeburt In The Religion Of The Zoarites, Elizabeth Siber White
Masters Theses
In 1817 a little-known group of German Separatists fled religious persecution in Wurttemberg and took up residence in America. Eventually known as the Zoarites, they founded a religious commune in the northeastern Ohio wilderness in 1819, which they called Zoar, and continued to live the common life there until 1898, at which time they voted to disband.
What sort of religious beliefs led them to endure persecution in Germany and then to establish a religious commune in Ohio? This study was undertaken in part to answer just such questions. Relying primarily on the unpublished, largely untranslated discourses of J. M. …
Third Century Urbanization In Northern Britain, Brent L. Coates
Third Century Urbanization In Northern Britain, Brent L. Coates
Masters Theses
The third century A.D. marked a period of growth on Roman urbanization in northern Britain, while in the rest of the empire towns and cities were being abandoned. Although this growth of urban centers brought peace and prosperity to a once troubled area, there is no written record that documents this success. Ancient authors considered Britain a rebellious province and unsafe to visit, thus limiting the information they recorded. The second century provides sufficient written information to describe the growing change of the north from a military province, but the archaeological information dated to the third century is needed to …
The Craft Of Musical Composition Applied To Hindemith's Clarinet Concerto, Melody Joy Bedell
The Craft Of Musical Composition Applied To Hindemith's Clarinet Concerto, Melody Joy Bedell
Masters Theses
The techniques used in the composition of melody and harmony presented in Paul Hindemith's The Craft of Musical Composition are used in the analysis of the clarinet and piano, a recording, and The Craft of Musical Composition were the materials used in this study. For the most part the construction of the clarinet concerto was consistent with Hindemith's laws of composition as presented in the text. Apart from the derivation of the chromatic scale, the methods and ideas of The Craft of Musical Composition--Series 1, Series 2, the classification of chords, harmonic fluctuation, melodic and harmonic degree-progressions and tonality--are …
The Oneida Community: Its Apologists And Its Critics, Nancy C. Morris
The Oneida Community: Its Apologists And Its Critics, Nancy C. Morris
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This thesis examines the historical literature regarding the Oneida Community (1848-81) from the society's conceptual beginnings in the 1830s to the present time. After an overview of the antebellum communitarian movement in the United States, a detailed description of the Oneida Community, one of America's most prominent nineteenth-century utopian experiments, is presented.
Chapters III, IV, and V survey the body of literature pertinent to the Oneida Community and its founder and spiritual leader, John Humphrey Noyes, over the last 145 years. The writings of the Oneida apologists, a majority of whom were Oneida Community family members and their descendants, are …
A Humanistic Consideration Of The Farm Security Administration Photographs Made In Virginia, Brooks Johnson
A Humanistic Consideration Of The Farm Security Administration Photographs Made In Virginia, Brooks Johnson
Institute for the Humanities Theses
During the years 1935 to 1943 photographers employed by the Farm Security Administration documented America struggling through the Great Depression and its subsequent entry into World war II. Originally conceived as a way to provide information about problems in the rural areas of the country and to help sell the New Deal. The director, Roy Stryker, transformed the project into more than just a bureaucratic exercise in propaganda. Instead, Stryker consciously attempted to create a photographic portrait of the American culture.
The majority of the 159 photographs on which this thesis is based have not been seen outside of the …

The Evolution Of The Cadence In The Cyclic Masses Of Dufay, Ockeghem, Josquin, And Gombert, Janet E. Giffin
Graduate Thesis Collection
Four composers have been chosen for this study. They were the leaders of four successive generations of composers influential in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their masses were written between the years 1420 A.D. and 1560 A.D. Many significant changes took place during this period of one hundred forty years. Older compositional techniques such as the use of formes fixes and isorhythm all but disappeared. Cantus firmus technique was transformed and extended to unify the mass cycle. Aesthetic considerations became more important to the composer than liturgical canons, and composers began to regard themselves as artistic creators not mere …
In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper
In The Age Of Obsession, Ivor E. Cooper
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In Writing In the Age of Obsession the author has attempted to create a novel which examines a number of important issues. By writing the narrative in the first person he has been able to pursue these themes through the development of Daniel Rackham, the main character.
The author chose the late nineteenth century as the setting because the period was one of dynamic and often revolutionary change. Within such a time period as this, when an old era is passing away and a new era is beginning, we are able to witness phenomena which can only be precipitated by …

Maypoles And Misfits : A Study Of Puritan Orthodoxy And Anglican Heterodoxy In Seventeenth Century Massachusetts, Sarah V. Miller
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The particular ideas and history of Puritanism in America has been the focus of historians of many different persuasions for diverse purposes. The relationship between Puritanism in England and the evolution of Puritanism in America, as it relates to the history of Anglicanism and American independence has not been a major concern of most historians, however.
The two biographical studies contained in this paper, one of Thomas Morton and one of Sir Edmund Andros, are linked in history on several levels. The superficial similarities between the two men were a contributing factor to the choice of topic in this paper. …

John Ford: A Concise Annotated Bibliography, Jeffrey L. Johnson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study fills the needs for an annotated bibliography in John Ford studies. Until now, no such project has been attempted. Because of the tremendous amount of material available by and about Ford, the scope of this project was limited to published works about Ford in English.
In compiling the bibliography, I used previously published bibliographies on Ford and the annual MLA Bibliography. In addition, I consistently checked the bibliographies of each work cited in my bibliography to obtain those items which eluded me elsewhere.
I personally surveyed the contents of every book, essay, and other documents in preparing the …
