Background To The Second Amendment, John Thomas Nichols Dec 1977

Background To The Second Amendment, John Thomas Nichols

Dissertations and Theses

Research into the background of the Second Amendment is hampered by its relationship to the current highly emotional debate over gun control. Many otherwise useful secondary sources either ignore the issue completely or give accounts which reflect the controversies of the twentieth century rather than those of the eighteenth. Fortunately, however, the Americans of the revolutionary era wrote extensively about the subject.

With independence, the Americans were faced with the problem of organizing and controlling a defense establishment. The new nation was virtually defenseless: the

Continental Army was disbanded and the militia, after years of neglect, emasculated. During the decade …

Photonuclear Activation At The Pantex Plant, Gilbert L. Rendon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This is a structuralist reading of the theatrical works of Henry de Montherlant. The genera I approach incorporates the theories of Claude Levi-Strauss, Ro land Barth es, Jean Piaget, Jean Rousset, and Leo Spitzer. Two major types of structure are examined: the interrelationship of characters and the interrelationship of ideas. Two theoretical mode Is are constructed. The first is a triadic mode I of the relationships among characters in tightly-knit communities, based upon the sociological theories of Georg Simmel and Theodore Cap low. The second is a semiotic model of the relationships between opposing ideas, based upon the carré sémiotique …

The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix Dec 1977

The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study takes seriously the claim made by William Blake in his epic poem Milton that the model for his art was the Bible, especially the works of those "more ancient & consciously & professedly inspired Men," the Hebrew prophets. Through an examination of circumstances surrounding the composition of Blake's "first Vision of Light," and through analysis of the poem itself, it is shown not only that Blake was acquainted with certain conventional patterns and formulae from the biblical prophetic tradition, but also that he drew upon his knowledge of such strategies in this short poem enclosed in a letter …

The Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company, Thomas W. Southall Dec 1977

The Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company, Thomas W. Southall

Art & Art History ETDs

In 1865 in the small northern New Hampshire town of Littleton, Edward and Benjamin West Kilburn founded the Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company. Stereoscopic photography is the process whereby mounted pairs of slightly different photographs give the illusion of three dimensionality when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereography had been introduced to America over ten years before the Kilburns began publishing views, but it became an especially popular form of parlor entertainment in the decade following the Civil War.

Particularly noted for their stereographs of the White Mountains, the Kilburn Company also published quantities of views of national and international subjects. …

English Renaissance Humanist Education, Lori Ann Bjornstad Nov 1977

English Renaissance Humanist Education, Lori Ann Bjornstad

Dissertations and Theses

The following examines the historical development of English education available prior to university entrance in order to discover the impact of humanist ideas on the educational system. The survey of the structure and theory of pre-university English education begins in the early Middle Ages and continues through the Elizabethan period.

After examining the Medieval background, there follows a discussion of the political and religious settlement of the Reformation, and the basic programme of humanist reformers. Individual humanist writers are then studied, followed by a discussion of schools planned on humanist lines. With this, however, is contrasted a picture of English …

Hunter S. Thompson: Moralist Or Second-Rate Accountant, Charles W. Seefeldt Nov 1977

Hunter S. Thompson: Moralist Or Second-Rate Accountant, Charles W. Seefeldt

Culminating Projects in English

Many critics saw Hunter Thompson's work as little more than the ravings of a vicious misanthrope, and he was often written off as a drug-crazed lunatic. But, as an examination of his work shows, Thompson was really concerned with what he saw as a growing amorality in America. He should be read as a moralist, not as a maniac.

And, his effectiveness as ·a moralist ls largely determined by a unique style he developed--Gonzo. Thompson, himself, referred to this style as "bursts of madness and filigree," and it is, perhaps, this Gonzo style that brought critical attention to Thompson in …

The Mexican Woman: A Study Of Her Participation In The Revolution, 1910-1940, Shirlene Ann Soto

History ETDs

The Mexican Revolution produced far-reaching changes in the lives of women. Spurred by advances in industrialization which provided a host of new jobs and by the activities of feminists in the United States and Europe, Mexican women demanded full participation in national affairs. During the Revolution, they assumed new responsibilities, traveled to other parts of the Republic and acquired a sense of nationalism. Unfortunately, women revolutionaries did not receive proper recognition for their sacrifices. After participating in the fighting, plans and attempts to implement the goals of the Revolution, women were not rewarded for their efforts nor were they granted …

Landscape Painting In The Secondary Classroom, Margaret Shirley Aug 1977

Landscape Painting In The Secondary Classroom, Margaret Shirley

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis attempts to demonstrate an approach to secondary art education which will emphasize the student's own experience as the basis of his art work. Furthermore, the students' learning activities are given a broader context by the inclusion of material from the history of art within the framework of the studio course. Such an integrated approach can give meaningful insight to the adolescent as he deals with experience in a visual form.

This orientation to art education has evolved through the writer's own teaching experience and from reading the works of art educators. In preparation for the thesis, I researched …

Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury Aug 1977

Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury

Dissertations and Theses

Every Japanese high school student studies English for at least six years. However, the results of this study, especially in speaking, are poor. In the present study, educational, sociocultural, and linguistic obstacles to learning for the Japanese student are considered.

An educational system oriented toward passing college and university entrance examinations has distorted English curriculum. Furthermore, English teachers in Japan lack proficiency in the language. The teaching staffs and materials of language schools are poorly regulated.

Concern with relative status, group identification, and loss of face acts as a deterrent to learning. For many learners the wrong type of motivation …

The American Whig Review, 1845-1852: Its History And Literary Contents, Donald Frank Andrews Aug 1977

The American Whig Review, 1845-1852: Its History And Literary Contents, Donald Frank Andrews

Doctoral Dissertations

Although the American magazine market was fairly glutted in late 1844, there was room for The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science since it was the official organ of the Whig party as well as a literary review. In spite of the fact that most magazines of the period perished within one or two years, the American Whig Review (a more characteristic name adopted in 1850) served as the political journal of the conservative Whigs and as a competent literary review during eight of America's critical growing years, 1845-1852. During these years, the magazine underwent …

Methodist Circuit-Riders In America, 1766-1844, William A. Powell Jr. Aug 1977

Methodist Circuit-Riders In America, 1766-1844, William A. Powell Jr.

Master's Theses

The Methodist Episcopal Church became the largest religious denomination in the United States during the 1820's. Local expressions of the national body were established in nearly every American community. Methodist expansion was largely a result of the activity of circuitriders. These itinerants traveled and proclaimed the gospel to citizens, many of whom joined the Church and became part of a religious movement which influenced the l development of culture in the United States.

The traveling minister in the Methodist Church was noted for his self-sacrificing spirit. He endured hardships in the ministry which few men of the present age can …

A Church Growth Study Of Churches In North East India, Clinton Brazle Aug 1977

A Church Growth Study Of Churches In North East India, Clinton Brazle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Christ in North East Indian began as an indigenous movement among the Khasi tribe as an effort to restore New Testament Christianity. The movement is under fifty years old. It grew normally and rapidly until division occured among the leaders in 1963, when the growth rate dropped drastically. The movement has spread now to the Garos, Mizos, Mikirs, Nagas, Assamese, Kukis, and especially the Paites and Manipuree. There is a growing ethusiam among a few Christians which may eventually spread through many of the tribes of North East India and beyond.

Examination of the above-mentioned tribes of …

The New Deal Public Works Programs And Mexican-Americans In Mcallen, Texas, 1933-36, Irene Ledesma

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In an area like the Rio Grande Valley of Texas with a majority population of unskilled Mexican-Americans who generally worked for another group in trouble, the farmer, there was bound to be a high rate of unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration responded to unemployment with the several New Deal public works acts in 1933. The question then arises: what effect would such acts have on a majority group in an area where the minority population had political power?

Extensive use of county and city newspapers, a number of interviews, a short survey, and …

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper will attempt to put forth the close relationship between the account of creation as recorded in Genesis, chapters one and two, and the references to creation as recorded in Isaiah, chapters forty through sixty-six. This paper will deal with this relationship on the basis of the three verbs used in the first two chapters of Genesis to relate the creative activity of God: bara', 'asah, and yatzar.1 Also included will be those verbs which are apparent synonyms used by the author of Isaiah, chapters forty through sixty-six, for the three basic verbs in question.
