Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman Dec 1966

Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman

History ETDs

Some understanding of the state of native labor in the Indies is fundamental to an appreciation of post-Conquest society in the New World. The social and economic implications of Indian servitude are of such magnitude that they transcend other more dramatic aspects of Spanish domination in the sixteenth century. For Indian labor--certainly in the first decades--was the base upon which Spanish society reated; without it there waa a very real possibility of the abandonment of many American kingdoms. The degrees to which the conqueror depended upon the vanquished at once reflects the weak edifice of colonial society and defines the …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Military Occupation Of Alta California 1768 - 1776, Terence Michael Allen Oct 1966

A Comparative Analysis Of The Military Occupation Of Alta California 1768 - 1776, Terence Michael Allen

History ETDs

One of the most remarkable stories of Spanish Colonial California concerns the occupation of Alta California after some two hundred years of disinterest. A great number of present-day writers have characterized Spain's 1769 advance into San Diego as one initiated by religious motive. The pseudonym "Sacred Expedition," in fact, underscores that belief. However, this pious theme ignores the world and local situations which then existed. Although no one can deny that Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan co-workers were singularly adept at their chosen profession, careful investigation of source material concerning this subject has brought to light information which indicates …

The Ceremony Of Innocence., Janusz Kozikowski Jul 1966

The Ceremony Of Innocence., Janusz Kozikowski

English Language and Literature ETDs

The earliest conceptions I had of The Ceremony of Innocence were almost purely structural and centered around the desire to create a completely autonomous experience, dependent on its own specific laws, and not a derivation from, or a representation of, psychological reality. At the same time, I wanted to design a theatrical spectacle which would be as amusing and enjoyable as a puppet show. Both of these concerns led far from the usual concerns of similitude and psychological realism. I wanted to create not only an atmosphere of isolation and disassociation which would ease the audience’s usual strain for interpretation, …

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg Jun 1966

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg

History ETDs

When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office as President of the United States on March 4, 1861, the military establishment was unprepared for the coming struggle. The Navy Department was probably the most feeble of the armed services. It did not have the men, vessels or armament and lacked the legal authority to increase or strengthen them.

An Analysis Of Critical Approaches In The Revista Iberoamericana, From 1950 To 1960, Margretta Leroy Jun 1966

An Analysis Of Critical Approaches In The Revista Iberoamericana, From 1950 To 1960, Margretta Leroy

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Nearly all students of Latin American Literature come to their study with a background or parallel study in Peninsular Literature and at least one other literature, such as French or English. Such a student finds that until the last decade of the nineteenth century, when the Modernist movement exerted its influence, the literature of Spanish American was either scorned or ignored outside its own continent, that as a serious literary study it was not a part of university curricula until about thirty years ago, and that the critical writing he has been accustomed to consulting in other literatures is simply …

Pierpont Morgan Manuscript 324: Le Roman De La Rose; A Study In Social Transition, Louise A. Miller

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Art and literature, significant forms of human expression, serve as two valuable cultural sources for the understanding of a given civilization. The philosophical rationalism of Voltaire and the mythological paintings of Boucher, as contrasted to the concern with self of Chateaubriand and the tragically realistic paintings of Gericault, provide an important expressive background to the understanding of society before and after the French Revolution. These sources provide a broader insight into the societies of the time, their influences upon and their reactions to the immediate historical event. Similarly, the starkness of the paintings of Buffet and the preoccupation with the …

Albert Camus's Requiem Pour Une Nonne Translated And Annotated, With Introductory Materials, Donald J. Pattow

English Language and Literature ETDs

The original purpose of this translation was twofold: to make available in English a hitherto untranslated work by Albert Camus; and, since Camus adapted, not merely translated, William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun, to afford a unique comparative study of these two modern writers.

Sebastian Vizcaino And Spanish Expansion In He Pacific Ocean: 1580-1630, W. Michael Mathes

History ETDs

Much has been written relative to the history of the early discoveries of California. In almost all works treating of early California, the name of Sebastian Vizcaino appears, but apart from mention of his voyage to California in 1602, little more is said relative to this explorer. Furthermore, in many instances, what little is said is in a critical vein. Nevertheless, no single individual has more contact with California during the first two and one-half centuries following its discovery than Vizcaino, and, while monuments and parks have been named for his predecessor, Rodriguez Cabrillo, few monuments have been named for …

The Narrator's View Of Hester Prynne:A Study Of Narrative Commentary About Hester Prynne In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter., Stephanie Lee Mitchell May 1966

The Narrator's View Of Hester Prynne:A Study Of Narrative Commentary About Hester Prynne In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter., Stephanie Lee Mitchell

English Language and Literature ETDs

On the evening of February 3, 1850 Nathaniel Hawthorne completed The Scarlet Letter. Upon finishing the last scene he read, or “tried to read it, rather” to his wife, but found this difficult task.

. . . my voice swelled and heaved, as if I were tossed up and down on an ocean as it subsides after a storm. But I was in a very nervous state then, having gone through a great diversity of emotion while writing it for many months.

The “great diversity of emotion” which impelled Hawthorne’s unrelenting work on the romance was not to remain his …

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan May 1966

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan

History ETDs

This thesis deals with the military career and New Mexico governorship of Facundo Malgares. His career, from approximately 1800 to 1822, after Mexico had become independent of Spain, illustrated the operation of Spanish institutions during the last days of Spanish rule in the northern interior province of Mexico. Of special importance were problems associated with Spanish-Italian and Anglo-Spanish relations when the Indian was still powerful and the United States was beginning its westward expansion. Spanish land policy in New Mexico and its continued effect on individual holdings after United States possession was and continues to be important in New Mexico. …

The Great Taos Bank Robbery And Other Recollections, Anthony G. Hillerman May 1966

The Great Taos Bank Robbery And Other Recollections, Anthony G. Hillerman

English Language and Literature ETDs

The essays included here fit the definition of that word more in its literal sense as "attempts" than in the literary meaning given the term by the art of Montaigne and Bacon. Specifically, they are attempts to express my views of the town of Taos, of the village of Pecos, of Northern New Mexico politics, and of two hunts for the knowledge of early man on the Llano de Albuquerque and for the source of a disease in the Pecos Wilderness Area. They presume of the reader neither special knowledge of, nor interest in, their subjects. They seek instead to …

The Unifying Theme Of Ben Jonson's Works As Shown In Sejanus And Volpone, Dorothy Mumford Logan May 1966

The Unifying Theme Of Ben Jonson's Works As Shown In Sejanus And Volpone, Dorothy Mumford Logan

English Language and Literature ETDs

Jonson always has a central—and single—argument or truth: namely, men do not live by reason; on the contrary, they only pretend to reason, thus causing the world of folly or evil. Nor was this concept peculiar to Jonson. The presence of it in Discoveries is enough to mark it as established in critical tradition. Furthar, Jonson’s view of the nature of man is traceable from the classical concept of “right reason” to the Renaissance view of man as a being endowed with a divine reason which is continually at variance with his “will” to err. Almost any general book no …

A History Of Population In The El Paso-Ciudad Juarez Area, J. Lawrence Mcconville May 1966

A History Of Population In The El Paso-Ciudad Juarez Area, J. Lawrence Mcconville

Latin American Studies ETDs

Preface

During the summer of 1965 representatives of the border states of the United States and Mexico met at Tres Lagunas, New Mexico, to determine whether their common interests and problems might lend themselves to regional cooperation efforts. The result of this meeting was the formation of the Mexican-American Border States Organization, which met for the first time on September 25, 1965, at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

This thesis was conceived with essentially the same point of view; that is, the idea that the history of the people of the Southwest and Northern Mexico has unity that …

Un Estudio De La RelacióN Entre Gautier De Gonzalo De Bereo A Traves Del "Mulagro De TeóFilo", Joan Leeds Graviss

A Survey Of Brazilian Philosophy, Allan S. Gnagy Apr 1966

A Survey Of Brazilian Philosophy, Allan S. Gnagy

Philosophy ETDs

Growing awareness of the interdependence of North and South American cultures, economically, politically and idealogically, makes it imperative that North Americans increase their understanding of the culture history and philosophies of South American countries. Then importance of the role of Brazilian philosophers in reflecting cultural developments has been too long neglected by North American philosophers. Since very little has been written in English about the philosophical environment in Brazil, a need exists for filling this gap. My own combination of abilities, an interest in philosophy and some facility with Portuguese and Spanish, makes the undertaking of the present project a …

Gerald L.K. Smith And Anti-Semitism, Isabel B. Price Mar 1966

Gerald L.K. Smith And Anti-Semitism, Isabel B. Price

History ETDs

According to Paul Massing, author of Rehearsal For Destruction, a historical analysis of the forerunners of anti-Semitism in Germany, a predisposition to anti-Semitism was manifested in social protests in 19th century Germany. Liberal historians and socialist writers were convinced that, used as a political tool, anti-Semitic agitation could arouse the political interests of dormant social groups to join the forces of progress. Anti-Semitism movements which formulated the racist ideology and kept alive and disseminated anti-Semitism throughout German culture, were in existence long before Hitler rose to power. With the forces of the twenties and thirties, however, inflation, depression, unemployment, social …

Milton And Marvell--And Samuel Parker, Henry F. Lippincott Jr. Jan 1966

Milton And Marvell--And Samuel Parker, Henry F. Lippincott Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis explores the ways in which Samuel Parker, an obscure philosopher and theologian who became Bishop of Oxford, played a role in the literary relationship of John Milton and Andrew Marvell. Chapter I gives the sketchy biographical facts which link the three men. As a Latin Secretary to Oliver Cromwell, Milton helped the young Marvell advance his prospects until Marvell ultimately became a Member of Parliament and a government emissary. But as Marvell rose in political circles, Milton gradually retired from public life. Perhaps to repay past favors, Marvell defended Milton from scurrilous attacks by Parker and his followers …

A Study Of Some Of Gil Vicente's Aspects As A Didactic Moralist., William W. Megenney Jan 1966

A Study Of Some Of Gil Vicente's Aspects As A Didactic Moralist., William W. Megenney

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Before the appearance of Gil Vicente, one cannot speak of a theatre in Portugal except, perhaps, of some traces of religious dramatizations during the Middle Ages and of some documents of allegorical theatre during the times of D. Joāo II—a theatre based entirely on scenography and in which the literary world was almost entirely unknown. Anrique da Mota, although proportioning some aid in the understanding of Gil Vicente’s theatre, seems to be overshadowed by the impressive figure of the latter. Without any dramatic tradition surrounding him, Gil Vicente turns toward such figures as Juan del Encina, looking for possible suggestions …

Herman Melville's Use Of Nature In The Encantadas And Selected Poems, Patricia Hogan Jan 1966

Herman Melville's Use Of Nature In The Encantadas And Selected Poems, Patricia Hogan

English Language and Literature ETDs

The apparent indifference of nature toward man is a characteristic feature of Herman Melville’s writings that marks a distinction between Melville and his contemporaries, the romantics. Although Melville writes during the romantic period in American Literature and is both a romantic and a transcendentalist in many of his attitudes, he does not fully share the optimism and the worship of nature that was strong in the United States during the pre-Civil war period. In Britain the confidence of romanticism was giving way to the skepticism of the Victorians as Melville began his literary career. Melville’s own attitude of question, doubt, …
