The Role Of Winston Churchill In The First World War, Olaf Ottesen Brandt Aug 1941

The Role Of Winston Churchill In The First World War, Olaf Ottesen Brandt

Theses and Dissertations

In writing this thesis I have emphasized the qualities of vigor, ability and foresight that Churchill showed to such a statesmanlike degree in the last war, also the special technical training in ships, tanks, planes and their use that he gained. I have endeavored to point out in what ways these have qualified him for his role as Prime Minister of England in the present war. I have brought out his connections with American life through his family, his books and lectures, and his work as munitions minister. I have tried to show that this has affected American public opinion …

History Of "Poetry: A Magazine Of Verse" And Its Contribution To Modern Poetry, Irma R. Bengtson Aug 1941

History Of "Poetry: A Magazine Of Verse" And Its Contribution To Modern Poetry, Irma R. Bengtson

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to present a history of "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse" and to show its contribution to modern poetry. The volumes of the magazine, the writings of the founder, Harriet Monroe, and criticisms from contemporary literary critics were read and used as sources for the history of "Poetry" and its contribution. From the study it was found that the poets of the last two decades of the nineteenth century had followed too closely the patterns used by the past generations to present the new life which was at hand. As a consequence poetry had reached …

There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston Jul 1941

There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston

Master's Theses

In my thesis, I wish to present the story of my maternal grandmother as it is revealed in the lives of her thirteen children. I have been interested in the story since I can remember. My earliest memories are of sitting on Grandma’s lap and listening to tales of Indians on the warpath, of Kansas prairie sod houses and rattlesnakes, and of what my aunts, uncles, and my mother used to do when they were small. To avoid any possible embarrassment to living persons, I have fictionized the names of my characters. I have, however, retained all actual dates and …

A Study Of The Women Characters In The Long Plays Of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, Katherine Schoendaller Jul 1941

A Study Of The Women Characters In The Long Plays Of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, Katherine Schoendaller

Master's Theses

In this thesis I have given summaries and characterizations of the women characters in Eugene Gladstone O' Neill's plays of more than one act in the order of their writing. At the close of the summarizations and characterizations of the individual plays I have attempted to classify the women characters according to their personality types and their moral traits. All the plays with the exception of six, Bread and Butter, Servitude, Second Engineer or The Personal Equation, Now I Ask You, Ancient Mariner, and S.S. Glencairn are included in this study. These six plays were not available to me. I …

Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt Jul 1941

Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt

Master's Theses

This is a true story, as far as actual dates and the verification of the incidents is concerned. The writer has filled in the conversation and the human interest bits as it seemed the people of that day might have talked or acted. Mr. Plumb is a true character, and the story of his life is given according to the facts as the writer was able to find them. That Mr. Plumb was a typical, and yet individual character, is proved by the fact that one year before his death he was chosen by t h e Red Willow County, …

Ellsworth, Kansas : The History Of A Frontier Town, 1854-1885, John Choitz Jul 1941

Ellsworth, Kansas : The History Of A Frontier Town, 1854-1885, John Choitz

Master's Theses

Frontier towns have developed along the same pattern. First, a lawless element ruled the locality with its threat of sudden death. Dead men, carried out with their boots on, gave mute proof to the skeptical that such threats were not idly given. Next, enterprising citizens, organizing in the dead of the night, brought some respect for decency and order by swinging one end of a rope over a projecting limb of a cottonwood tree and knotting the other end around the neck of a lawless ringleader. Then justice courts and law officers were introduced as the civilized - though many …

A Historical Sketch Of The Border Troubles In Bourbon And Linn Counties, Kansas, 1854-1860, Wayne Delavan Jul 1941

A Historical Sketch Of The Border Troubles In Bourbon And Linn Counties, Kansas, 1854-1860, Wayne Delavan

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Border troubles got a late start in the southeastern section of Kansas Territory. The free-state cause had attained a slight supremacy in the territory by the time these troubles were well developed in Bourbon and Linn Counties. This loss of the territorial government perhaps made pro-slavery partisans more bitter and less reasonable than they should have been. Some of the worst elements of the earlier struggle in the north drifted into this section. Examples of these can be given in George W. Clark and John Brown. Others who lacked a proper respect for life and property plus a distinct desire …

Sentimental Elements In The Writings Of Henry Fielding, Edna G. Roberts Jun 1941

Sentimental Elements In The Writings Of Henry Fielding, Edna G. Roberts

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is the purpose of this study to discuss the sentimental elements in the writings of Henry Fielding. There is no doubt that, for the most part, even a casual examination of Fielding's writings justifies the classification commonly assigned to him by his readers, that of intellectual realist. But it would be surprising if a man who was as sensitive to the temper of his time as was Fielding, could live in an age in which sentimentalism was becoming increasingly apparent, not only in the major literary genres of the period, but in the religion and philosophy as well, and …

A Study Of The Life And Works Of Charles Fletcher Lummis, Esther Gardner Jun 1941

A Study Of The Life And Works Of Charles Fletcher Lummis, Esther Gardner

English Language and Literature ETDs

It would be difficult to find a more interesting, versatile and colorful character than Charles Fletcher Lummis. His life was full of thrilling adventures and experiences with all different types of humanity. His great purpose was to bring the glories of the West to the smug East. "See America First" was one of his slogans. He believed that many people wished to see only the scenery and monuments of Europe, yet in their own country, there lay greater charms and a culture that was as ancient as the culture of the Greeks. One of the things said about him that …

George Wythe : A Biographical Sketch, Harold G. Owens Jun 1941

George Wythe : A Biographical Sketch, Harold G. Owens

Honors Theses

George Wythe is not nearly as well known or appreciated by Virginians as he should be. It is surprising how little has been done in Virginia in remembrance of him, who left so much for his state and for his country. In this thesis, which is more than an eulogy, I have attempted to show just how important George Wythe was to the development of our state and to the growth of the American Republic. If this paper ever finds its way into the hands of one reader who has never heard of George Wythe, its purpose will have been …

The History Of The Baptists Of Tennessee, Lawrence Edwards Jun 1941

The History Of The Baptists Of Tennessee, Lawrence Edwards

Masters Theses

Conclusion: The Primitive Baptists, as stated in the foreword, are a controversial people. They have lived up to that description in East Tennessee. They are, as we have seen, divided now into many small bands, called after the names of their various leaders, holding or not holding to this, that or the other in such a way as to brand them as 'secret order' Baptists, 'bar' Baptists, 'soft side,' 'hard side,' 'Two-Seeders,' and 'Progressives.'

How much longer they will be able to maintain their identity as a people holding distinctive doctrinal views following certain rules of practice and decorum …

A History Of Legal Education In Tennessee, Clyde Conley Street Jun 1941

A History Of Legal Education In Tennessee, Clyde Conley Street

Masters Theses

(From the Foreword)

In the past much criticism has been directed against Tennessee for her backwardness in legal education standards; and perhaps, frequently with no little justification. It is believed that this work will indicate that legal education and standards have shown marked progress over the past few decades.

Little has been done on the history of Jurisprudence in Tennessee. The author has attempted to collect and organize certain data in the field of legal education that would show the evolution of standards of preparation for admission to the Bar. He has made general comparison of early Tennessee lawyers …

The Writings Against The Adoption Of The Constitution, Henry E. Cake Jun 1941

The Writings Against The Adoption Of The Constitution, Henry E. Cake

Honors Theses

It is a small wonder that when delegates were sent to Philadelphia to consider forming a national or federal government that would be the supreme power binding the thirteen states together into one great unit that there was opposition to the formulation of a constitution and even greater - or at least more numerous - objections to phraseology and fundamental ideas of each article at every step of the formulatin gprocess. While there were one or two of the opposition who appear as cranks and chronic objectors, it seems that most of the membres of the opposition to the adoption …

William Watts Hart Davis In New Mexico, Robert D. Hepler May 1941

William Watts Hart Davis In New Mexico, Robert D. Hepler

History ETDs

In the study of New Mexico's history for the period 1850 to 1860, many references to William Watts Hart Davis are found. His book, El Gringo, is as much quoted source for information of that decade. But, actually, there seems to be little known of the man, aside from his literary works. It is the purpose of this study to bring forth a few facts regarding Davis' residence in the Territory of New Mexico.

Davis' experiences on his journey to New Mexico, his observations of the inhabitants and their customs, and his duties as Attorney-General are incorporated in this thesis. …

The Community Of Mullinville, Kansas (1870-1900), Marilla A. Alford May 1941

The Community Of Mullinville, Kansas (1870-1900), Marilla A. Alford

Master's Theses

In this thesis I have attempted to preserve the heritage of the pioneers for the coming generations of the Mullinville Community . I have closed the main body of the thesis with the year 1900 because I feel that the last forty years are too close to the present to be discussed without prejudice and that the lives of my own family have been too closely connected with the history of the community for me to take an unbiased attitude. I trust that sometime later someone will pick up this history where I have left off and add more to …

The Political Life Of Thomas Benton Catron, 1896-1921, Mary Sluga

History ETDs

Born and educated in Missouri, Thomas Benton Catron made his home in New Mexico from July, 1866, until his death in 1921. For approximately half a century he played an important role not only in the politics of the territory and state, but also in its business and professional life as well. The story of his varied activities is preserved in his letter books and scrap books, as well as in contemporary newspapers. No attempt will be made in this study to cover his whole career, but merely the latter part of his public life.

The Golden Age Of Lutheran Church Music, Walter Buszin May 1941

The Golden Age Of Lutheran Church Music, Walter Buszin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

While the chief aim of this thesis is to give thought to the musical developments of the Golden Age of Lutheran Church Music, the writer will attempt also to present an account of the general background which is furnished not only by the cultural and political, but also by the ecclesiastical conditions of this period and the periods which preceded it. This is being done not only because the author sees fit to accept the dictum set forth by Egon Friedell, but also because he is firmly convinced that developments within the Golden Age of Lutheran Church Music will then …

Dignified Methods Of Church Publicity, August Brustat Apr 1941

Dignified Methods Of Church Publicity, August Brustat

Bachelor of Divinity

Church publicity is an important phase of church work. It is the MEANS by which we call to the attention of immortal souls the truth of salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Methods of church publicity are an important part of the curriculum of a theological Seminary. Prospective ministers of the Gospel will be greatly aided in their future parish duties if dignified ways and means of publicizing the Gospel are called to their attention in the course on Practical Theology.

Problems Of Contemporary Mexico As Seen In The Works Of Mariano Azuela, Jose Antonio Flores Apr 1941

Problems Of Contemporary Mexico As Seen In The Works Of Mariano Azuela, Jose Antonio Flores

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Relatively little has been written concerning Mariano Azuela and his works in comparison to critical material on Mexican authors. Since Azuela is the recognized novelist of the the Mexican Revolution, it is necessary that intimate acquaintance with the man and his works be made in order to understand the problems, feelings, and aspirations of the Mexican people immediately prior to and during the Revolution.

The aim of this thesis is to examine critically the novels of Azuela in view of the known facts of the Mexican Revolution principally as they touch upon the religious, social, economic, and political aspects.
