Dostoyevsky And Wright On Becoming The Underground Man, Zain Alam
Dostoyevsky And Wright On Becoming The Underground Man, Zain Alam
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the parallels between Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground and Richard Wright's The Man Who Lived Underground, focusing on their shared use of the "Underground Man" archetype to critique philosophical and societal structures. Dostoyevsky's Underground Man embodies the contradictions of Determinism and Rational Egoism in 19th-century Russia, exposing the flaws of these ideologies through satire. In contrast, Wright recontextualizes this character to address racial injustice in mid-20th-century America, using Fred Daniels' descent into a literal underground to highlight systemic oppression. By comparing these works, the thesis demonstrates how both authors utilize the underground as a metaphorical space …
Virginia Woolf & The Ontology Of The Swerve, Brandon Borcoman
Virginia Woolf & The Ontology Of The Swerve, Brandon Borcoman
Dissertations and Theses
This paper attempts to show how Lucretius' ontology of the swerve, or clinamen, influenced Virginia Woolf's writing. By using Gilles Deleuze, Michel Serres and likeminded theorists, the idea is to not only explicate Lucretian thought, but to also succinctly incorporate it into the Woolfian oeuvre.
America’S Enabler: How Colson Whitehead’S The Underground Railroad Contributes To Racial Inertia, Cherif Ba
America’S Enabler: How Colson Whitehead’S The Underground Railroad Contributes To Racial Inertia, Cherif Ba
Dissertations and Theses
Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad was met with near universal acclaim and enjoys regard as an important work which illustrates the difficulty and horror that was black life under chattel slavery. This essay argues that despite the work’s stated purpose, its ultimate, if unintended effect is to reify the current racial hierarchy. Drawing primarily from current events and an Afropessimist framework, I attempt to illustrate how this work, and others like it, occupy a specific space in the cultural zeitgeist bent to a specific purpose: obfuscating contemporary liberalism’s current transgressions from its past ones and maintaining a social stratum with …
Author And Authorship In Arthur Miller’S Death Of A Salesman: Willy Loman's Attempts To Author A Nostalgic, Fictitious Past Lead To His Downfall, While Linda Loman’S Miller-Authored Warnings Fall On Willy’S Ever-Deaf Ears, Allison Stein-Jackter
Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the 20th century, the American male protagonist’s obsession with and longing for a past that never existed brings about his own downfall. In Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman nostalgically fantasizes about a bygone era, the pre-war days of glory and greatness, but as he attempts to recreate his presumed former prestige in a post-war world, the fantasy unravels, with not only death and destruction in his dream’s widening, illusory wake, but the unraveling also presents itself in the recognition that Willy’s carefully crafted memories are works of fiction. Decades of literary research focus on Willy’s …
From Bushwick To Portland: Bori Girls Of The Diaspora Revolutionizing The Puerto Rican Coming-Of-Age Narrative, Lily V. Alvarado
From Bushwick To Portland: Bori Girls Of The Diaspora Revolutionizing The Puerto Rican Coming-Of-Age Narrative, Lily V. Alvarado
Dissertations and Theses
Trailblazing Puerto Rican women in the diaspora have challenged dominant imagery and fought against patriarchy, U.S. imperialism, and white supremacy through their writing. Writers like Esmeralda Santiago and Nicholasa Mohr have transformed the literary canon via the bildungsroman, highlighting the unique struggles of Boricua girlhood and proving that our stories matter. Two prominent female Boricua writers today, Elisabet Velasquez and Gabby Rivera, have raised the baton that has been passed down to them and revolutionized the Diasporican literary canon. In their respective texts, When We Make It: A Nuyorican Novel and Juliet Takes a Breath, Velasquez and Rivera highlight the …
Complexities Of The Underrecognized: Conceptualizing Erasure And Exposure In Queer Caribbean Narratives, Noemi Saladin
Complexities Of The Underrecognized: Conceptualizing Erasure And Exposure In Queer Caribbean Narratives, Noemi Saladin
Dissertations and Theses
Queer is not explicitly about homosexuality, it is questioning orientations, identity, and the binary. This work aims to explore the multivalence of erasure and exposure in queer Caribbean narratives, which deconstructs or reconstructs stereotypes, sexuality, and identity. Erasure is defined as the exclusion or suppression of a member of the LGBTQ+ community in history and the present time due to differences in their gender orientation, sexuality, and sexual preference. Exposure allows these suppressed voices to be lifted and rejoiced through inclusivity and awareness. Colonization erased gender diversity in the Caribbean, instilling their Christianity and heteronormative beliefs. Colonization did not only …
An Excavation Of Margaret And Jerry Morgan: How The Architecture Of Black Liminal Spaces Shaped Antebellum Conflict Between Maryland And Pennsylvania, Felicia A. Appenteng
An Excavation Of Margaret And Jerry Morgan: How The Architecture Of Black Liminal Spaces Shaped Antebellum Conflict Between Maryland And Pennsylvania, Felicia A. Appenteng
Dissertations and Theses
In the 1830s, Jerry and Margaret Morgan and their six children were living as a free Black family in rural Pennsylvania, one of a growing number of such families in a part of the state that bordered Maryland. Suddenly, their lives were violently disrupted in 1837 when a group of men from Maryland, led by Edward Prigg, entered into Pennsylvania to seize Margaret and the children so that they could be enslaved. Although the most dramatic, this was only the latest twist in the unusual lives of the Morgan family. Jerry Morgan was born into enslavement, gained his freedom, and …
Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley
Serving With Pride: Analyzing Lgbtq+ Personnel Policy In The U.S. Military, Sonja Woolley
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines the evolution of LGBTQ+ personnel policies in the U.S. military, analyzing how these changes reflect broader social transformations and the military’s role as both a mirror and catalyst in societal shifts. It traces the historical roots of discriminatory practices against queer and transgender servicemembers, identifying key periods of reform and resistance. Using institutional theory to dissect the mechanisms of policy adaptation, this paper focuses on coercive, mimetic, and normative isomorphism, which illustrate the complex interplay between external societal pressures, internal demands for legitimacy, and the professionalization of the military. Through detailed case studies, the thesis highlights how …
The Romanticism Of The Patriarchy Versus Poems By Emily Dickinson, Anamelissa Carrion
The Romanticism Of The Patriarchy Versus Poems By Emily Dickinson, Anamelissa Carrion
Dissertations and Theses
Using poems by Emily Dickinson I will disect the closeting of the poet herself, meaning the hidden identity of the author from within her own work. The poems used here reference a writer hiding in plain sight, comparison to womens equality and how women have over centuries hidden their true identities in order to fit into the mandated social role of "feminine" as defined by men. The cyclical progression of womens rights movements.
This paper discusses how women will change their character and fundamental self development creating "closeted selves" or hidden selves they share to the world while hiding their …
A Study Of Gender Apartheid: Afghanistan And The Islamic Republic Of Iran, Golazin Safaeimojarad
A Study Of Gender Apartheid: Afghanistan And The Islamic Republic Of Iran, Golazin Safaeimojarad
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis investigates the systemic and institutionalized forms of gender-based discrimination termed gender apartheid, focusing on Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran. It argues that gender apartheid, a severe form of discrimination where women and girls are subjugated and denied fundamental rights under institutional frameworks, and Afghanistan under Taliban rule and Iran under the Islamic Republic of Iran are two prime cases of gender apartheid. Through a qualitative research approach employing case studies and a comprehensive review of legal documents, academic materials, and reports from reputable organizations, the thesis outlines how gender apartheid is not only a direct product …
“A True Tower Of Babel”: Nation, Race, And Gender In The French Foreign Legion, 1831 To 1854, Nicholas Michael Charnley
“A True Tower Of Babel”: Nation, Race, And Gender In The French Foreign Legion, 1831 To 1854, Nicholas Michael Charnley
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The French Foreign Legion, part of the July Monarchy’s 1831 expansion of the Army of Africa, sought to create a non-French force entirely deployable outside of the metropole. The creation of the expatriate corps intended to solve two of France’s most pressing problems at the time: an excess of foreign migrants at home, and a dearth of French soldiers abroad. The Paris government hoped to attract recruits from its considerable non-national male population, particularly political exiles and migrant workers fleeing Europe’s 1830 revolutionary wave. Initially intended as a temporary expedient for the homeland’s demographic crisis, the expatriate fighting force grew …
Stratifying The Social: The Race/Class Dialectic And The Fetishization Of Race In Our Neoliberal Contemporary, Steven D. Delmagori
Stratifying The Social: The Race/Class Dialectic And The Fetishization Of Race In Our Neoliberal Contemporary, Steven D. Delmagori
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This dissertation utilizes the lens of Social Reproduction Theory to examine the consequences of viewing race and racism and other systems of oppression like Patriarchy as separate or additive autonomous ontologies. Intersectionality Theory posits oppressions as independent systems that “add” or “intersect” onto oppressed subjects in particular circumstances. On the other hand, responding to Intersectionality Theory, Social Reproduction Theory understands systems of oppression as mutually constitutive social relations. Social Reproduction Theory therefore allows for a more thorough understanding of the relationship between racism and other systems of oppression and their own relationship to capitalism. Rather than theorizing these social relations …
Rhetorical (Re)Inscription Practices Among Black Intercollegiate Football Participants In The Era Of Name, Image And Likeness, Mikayla Beaudrie
Rhetorical (Re)Inscription Practices Among Black Intercollegiate Football Participants In The Era Of Name, Image And Likeness, Mikayla Beaudrie
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When intercollegiate athletic participants were permitted the right to profit off of their name, image and likeness (NIL), the landscape of college sports was fundamentally changed. This qualitative explanatory case study investigated one consequence of that change: the discourse of amateurism. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has historically identified participants in the athletic programs it oversees with the word “student-athlete.” In the years since the word was first introduced, its meaning has generally been static. In short, the linguistic sign “student-athlete” has been signified in and by the discourse to reflect the amateur status of collegiate sport participants, emphasizing …
Nuestras Voces: Representation And Visibility Of Latinx Women Archaeologists In The U.S., Milsy Westendorff
Nuestras Voces: Representation And Visibility Of Latinx Women Archaeologists In The U.S., Milsy Westendorff
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
According to the 2020 Society for American Archaeology Members Assessment Survey, Latinx individuals comprise the largest minority group within archaeology. However, there is no scholarship or literature focusing specifically on the experiences of Latinx women archaeologists based in the U.S. This research fills in that gap through ethnographic interviews with 9 Latinx women archaeologists. By centering their experiences, we are able to see how their background and identity impacts and influences the way they conduct archaeology and the questions they ask, the barriers that are unique to them as Latinx women, why there is such a lack of representation of …
Guardians Of The Community: A History Of Provident Hospital, 1891-1950, Lenie Annoh Adolphson
Guardians Of The Community: A History Of Provident Hospital, 1891-1950, Lenie Annoh Adolphson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Established in 1891 in Chicago, Illinois, Provident Hospital was born out of the urgent need to combat racial discrimination and segregation. Provident Hospital stood as a beacon of hope for nearly a century, serving as one of the few healthcare facilities open to Chicago’s Black population. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams’s vision of an interracial hospital was a powerful symbol of unity, brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Black physicians, White philanthropists, Black women’s clubs, and community members. However, this vision was continually challenged by interference from White donors, increasing spatial segregation, intensifying poverty following the Great Migration, and …
Divided Crowns: An Ideological Criticism Of Self-Black Determination And Conflicting Visions Of Wakanda In Black Panther, Alaya E. Hubbard
Divided Crowns: An Ideological Criticism Of Self-Black Determination And Conflicting Visions Of Wakanda In Black Panther, Alaya E. Hubbard
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Using an ideological criticism of Hollywood’s Black Panther (2018), this paper analyzes the differing portrayals of the self-Black determination of the film’s main characters, T’Challa and Killmonger, as it relates to their backgrounds, cultural connections, racial identities, power dynamics, and their fights for social justice. Aspects of the film that were analyzed included characters’ actions, dialogue, lore, and presence. Digging deeper into the film’s story once key themes were revealed. This examination included parallels to the real-world, including locations, social movements, and social reformation leaders. The goal of the paper is to show how the film offers insights into broader …
Analysing The Prevalence Of Servant Leadership Characteristics And Cultural Values In A Uae-Based Multinational And Multicultural Workforce, Richard John Atkinson
Analysing The Prevalence Of Servant Leadership Characteristics And Cultural Values In A Uae-Based Multinational And Multicultural Workforce, Richard John Atkinson
Theses
In an increasingly virtual, pandemic-affected working environment, cross-cultural and people-centric leadership approaches are needed. Scholars have explored leadership effectiveness under different conditions and influences. However, in the body of leadership literature, there is scant attention to the variance across cultures for servant leadership to manage workers effectively.
This mixed-methods study explores whether servant leadership relates to cultural characteristics across three different nationalities in a UAE-based multinational organisation, providing a more comprehensive understanding of these relationships and differences and employees' perceptions. The quantitative method is examined using context-specific knowledge and the qualitative method explores the nuances of participant responses making the …
Challenging The Myth Of Consensus: Irish Australian Voices In Perth During The Great War Conscription Referendums, Alexander Mcclure
Challenging The Myth Of Consensus: Irish Australian Voices In Perth During The Great War Conscription Referendums, Alexander Mcclure
Theses
The controversial conscription referendums of 1916 and 1917 in Australia saw a resurgence of religious sectarianism and a perceived entanglement with the aftermath of political violence in Ireland. Examining the voting outcomes in all the Australian states for the referendums may suggest that Western Australia stood against the nationwide trend of rejecting Prime Minister William Hughes’s proposals for compulsory military service. Analysis over the last thirty years has challenged this idea, which is that Western Australia showed a unique, widespread consensus during the Great War period. A greater understanding has developed with the increasing digital accessibility of wartime primary sources, …
Access, Security, And Trust: Balancing Agencies' Need-To-Access Encrypted Data With Digital Security And Public Trust In Australian Government's Policy Approaches To Law Enforcement And National Security, Stephen Anthony Haydon
Access, Security, And Trust: Balancing Agencies' Need-To-Access Encrypted Data With Digital Security And Public Trust In Australian Government's Policy Approaches To Law Enforcement And National Security, Stephen Anthony Haydon
Theses
In the 21st Century, governments around the world are confronted by the challenges of policing against serious crime, terrorism, and other malicious-actor threats in an increasingly complex and convoluted digital landscape. Accelerating social changes and advances in secure and anonymising technologies (including end-to-end encryption) are providing regular frustrations to law enforcement and intelligence organisations. These agencies must detect, deter, and disrupt the threats to lives, public safety, and national security posed by malicious foreign and domestic actors who are utilising such technologies to communicate securely and ‘go dark’ online. Accessing encrypted data to identify and investigate these threats frequently requires …
Sweetbriar: I Wound To Heal, Megan Foster
Sweetbriar: I Wound To Heal, Megan Foster
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This work questions the societal disconnect between the readiness of human emotion and the restraint with which we discuss it. As the well-to-do ladies of the Victorian era would gather flowers to create tussie-mussies and nosegays to adorn themselves and send messages, the pieces of the MFA thesis exhibition Sweetbriar: I Wound to Heal divulge intense realities through the palatability and presentability of a flower’s beauty. The flowers in this work (as with Victorian Flower Language) act as signifiers for greater emotional concepts. Harebells for grief. Peonies for shame. Gorse for anger. Each flower/emotion in this exhibition is connected directly …
Poster, Performed: Understanding Public Opinions Of Authorship In Generative Artificial Intelligence Models Via Analogy, Wylie Z. Kasai
Poster, Performed: Understanding Public Opinions Of Authorship In Generative Artificial Intelligence Models Via Analogy, Wylie Z. Kasai
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Over the last decade, generative artificial intelligence models have advanced significantly and provided the public with several tools to create new works of art. However, the true authorship of these works has been debated due to their training on web-scraped data. Serving as an analogy to these larger models, Poster, Performed is an interactive artificial intelligence exhibition project that uses image assets submitted by the public to create poster compositions with custom image processing algorithms. During the course of a four-day exhibition, visitors were asked to identify the exhibition’s primary artist from five options: (1) participants who submitted image assets, …

Opposition Man, Theodore John Stratton
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Michael M. Morris is an oppositional researcher searching not only for dirt to take down those he feels are unworthy to hold political office, but also for his own direction in life. After the tragic loss of his wife and only child, he begins to put the pieces of his life back together, only to be pulled back into both destructive old habits and into the very town he hoped to avoid. Persuaded to return to Tallahassee, Florida, Mike finds himself not only fighting the wealthy and politically powerful family responsible for his misery but also the guilt that keeps …
A Litany For Survival: Exploring Activism, Feminism, And Collective Identity In Women's Movements In Pakistan, Nida Zehra
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Beginning from the history of women's activism and movements in Pakistan, to how differing forms of activism between the old and young generations are shaping the women's movement, this thesis sheds light on the Aurat (Woman) March in Pakistan, that first began in 2018 as an occasion to celebrate International Women's Day, that has heralded a fourth wave of feminism, began a new form of activism, and has been seen as a continuation of the women’s movement in modern-day Pakistan. My research studies its dynamics and the young Pakistani movement actors of today. It analyzes interviews of Aurat March participants …
Ukrainian Beauty, Daryna Gladun
Ukrainian Beauty, Daryna Gladun
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
‘Ukrainian Beauty’ is a collection of poetry that emerged from my two years in MALS. It confronts the misrepresentation of a female body and experience in a male-dominant society of a rising democracy.
The poetry collection commences with an essay, ‘Ukrainian Beauty—91’ and beyond,’ which delves into the historical and political backdrop of the first national pageant, ‘Ukrainian Beauty,’ held in February 1991, a pivotal year marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The 20 poems in the collection reference the late 1980s-1990s artworks by the Kharkiv School of Photography and Odesa Conceptual Artists, Les Podervianskyi’s radio plays, texts …
The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary
The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Abstract
In the era of Climate Change, many are concerned that the end of the Anthropocene, or the end of the era of human life on Earth, is upon us. Western European colonialism and its subsequent systems (settler-colonialism, colonial-capitalism, and globalization - sometimes termed “neocolonialism”) have all been implicated in contributing to unsustainable behaviors linked to accelerating climate change. In searching for possible solutions, some have called for listening to Indigenous Peoples, citing ethics of sustainability found among many Indigenous cultures. However, the cultural products of settler-colonialism are still dominant in ways that do not allow for Indigenous worldviews to …
An Ideal Science, Kyle Singh
An Ideal Science, Kyle Singh
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Many contemporary debates and distinctions in the philosophy of science stem from a methodological view that takes the project of metaphysics to be descriptive in nature. I argue that if one adopts an approach that looks at how we use and change our concepts instead several key implications follow. The first is that non-trivial conceptual continuity between theories is unavoidable. The second is that Identifying these continuities can help us determine how we ought to develop successive theories. My prime example for a candidate that merits this kind of continuous status are ghost fields in Quantum Field Theory (QFT). In …
Behind The Rhododendron, Tj Riley
Behind The Rhododendron, Tj Riley
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Like a rhododendron, man most often presents to the observer his ornamental self. Yet, what keeps in the shadows of all he presents to the world? What remains beneath in the dark soils of past experience from where he’s come? What must perish and decay to yield hearty growth and an individual expression that reaches humbly, and more deeply, toward some divine light? And what of this seemingly intuitive notion of something sacred he may struggle to comprehend and know?
Behind the Rhododendron is an intensely personal collection of poems that earnestly strives to scratch at the surface of such …
School Culture: Identifying The Barriers To Belonging At Boarding Schools And Shifting The Culture, Kyle Connolly
School Culture: Identifying The Barriers To Belonging At Boarding Schools And Shifting The Culture, Kyle Connolly
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
School Culture: Identifying the Barriers to Belonging at Boarding Schools and Shifting the Culture is a theoretical application of sociological concepts to boarding school social spaces. The social environment in schools is a venue where students are subjected to endless influences that play a major role in shaping their social realities. Though much debate in education focuses on the curriculum in public school settings, there is far less attention given to small boarding school communities and even less attention on the culture of belonging, or the obstacles to belonging that exist within it. As American society grows more diverse, economically …
Optical Absorption Of Defects In Aluminum Nitride, Mackenzie Siford
Optical Absorption Of Defects In Aluminum Nitride, Mackenzie Siford
All ETDs from UAB
Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an ultrawide bandgap semiconductor material known for its applications in high power microelectronic and optoelectronic devices due to its high thermal conductivity and high electrical resistivity. Point defects are known to hinder the material’s properties and are therefore a subject of interest in semiconductor materials research. The samples used in this work were grown by physical vapor transport (PVT) at Hexatech and they exhibit amber and clear coloration as well as a nonuniformity of charge, which was investigated. Experiments were carried out by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photo-EPR spectroscopy in order to detect the defect …
