The Philosophy Of Composition, Frederick Paul Arnold
The Philosophy Of Composition, Frederick Paul Arnold
Bachelors’ Theses
D.ring the slow and regular development of the human race from infancy to adolescence and from adolescence to old age, the one question confronting it is the "quiddity" of its environment. One of the most prominent of man's characteristics is to seek knowledge; to learn something new; to know what was hitherto unknown and through this knowledge to gain further enlightenment upon things about him. He has studied the planets and the elements; he has made note of the physical and chemical laws but has me:rely attempted to gain an adequate knowledge of himself.

Mahone, The Boss, Celia Levinson
Mahone, The Boss, Celia Levinson
Honors Theses
It is no accident or chance smile of fortune when a man works doggedly and whole-heartedly with all the force of a dynamic spirit and sheer indomitable will toward one end, that he may wield the sceptre of power and bend the wills of other men to his. Whether or not the results of such control of power will amount to greatness depends upon the uses to which the weapon is put and upon the soul of the man. Power can be acquried, but true greatness never. True greatness emanates from within the spirit and cannot be spread over the …
A History Of The Treatment Of Insanity In Massachusetts, Robert U. Cooper
A History Of The Treatment Of Insanity In Massachusetts, Robert U. Cooper
Historical Dissertations & Theses
In this thesis, an attempt has been made to sketch the progress in the treatment of mental disorders, from the earliest records to the present time. The introductory account of the conditions before the seventeenth century briefly considers the methods employed in Europe and Northern Africa prior to that date, while the main narrative is confined principally to the advancement achieved in Massachusetts since the Colonial days. For the sake of convenience and clarity, the legislative progress, the development of institutions and the improvement in methods of treatment, have been separated, as far as expedient, in the presentation of the …
Thomas W. Gilmer, Rebekah V. Lawson
Thomas W. Gilmer, Rebekah V. Lawson
Honors Theses
It often happens that the names of some men, who had a large part in shaping the past policies of our country, are not now current in the thoughts of the average student of history. It is left to biographical monographs of this nature to review the lives of these men. With this ever increasing group of names may be placed that of Thomas Walker Gilmer. He was influential in the affairs of his native state, Virginia, during the decade from 1830 to 1840. This was the period when Southern leaders really dominated national affairs and Virginia was not racking …

A History Of The Theatre In Louisville., Mary Martha Dietz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A child is considered by some psychologists to pass through on its way to manhood the stages through which the race has passed on its way to civilization. If this is true of a single man, might it not equally be true of a community of men? Have not most settlements, in greater or a less degree, passed through the stages of development common to the growth of all cities until they have reached the standards of their day? A company of civilized men and women going forth to make a settlement in a new place, upon their arrival at …
The Sources Of Buddhism, T. Newton Hill
The Sources Of Buddhism, T. Newton Hill
Graduate Thesis Collection
At first sight the problem of the sources of Buddhism seems to require merely a study of the life and teachings of Gotama. or Sakyamuni, the "Buddha" or "enlightsned one." The existence even of such a person has been questioned, however. Many scholars question his importance in the development of Buddhism, and even in the field of his life and career there is a great variety in the theories which have been seriously held by western scholars. It is the purpose of this thesis to study these problems and to arrive at the true solution of the sources of Buddhism.

The Diplomatic Relations Between China And Japan Since Russo-Japanese War, Yu M. Chen
The Diplomatic Relations Between China And Japan Since Russo-Japanese War, Yu M. Chen
Graduate Thesis Collection
The relations between China and Japan in a political or diplomatic sense are only of modern origin. During long centuries the dealings between these two countries were very unimportant, if not non-existent. Nippon, in the first instance, had borrowed from the Middle Kingdom of her literature, her arts, her fashions and her philosophies.

The Child's Bible, Leonidas Latimer Loofbourow
The Child's Bible, Leonidas Latimer Loofbourow
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Every lover of scripture takes a Bible for himself within our larger one. He may read the 60 books from a sense of duty or profit, but there are portions that he loves, which he reads time and again. Those are the Bible within the Bible that he has made for himself. Any Bible used long and effectively by one person has this story to tell. Torn edges, pencillngs, thumbmarks plentiful here, and large sections of clean pages there show what the owner may never have dreamed, that he has his personal edition of our common Bible. This is inevitable. …
The Rights Of Access Of An Upland Owner To Navigable Waters, Marshall John Rutherford
The Rights Of Access Of An Upland Owner To Navigable Waters, Marshall John Rutherford
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The question to be discussed in this dissertation is whether or not the upland owners on navigate waters live, by virtue of the position of their land a right of ocean to the free enjoyment of the water in front of the land there of for purpose of navigation.
The question here involved has been considered by many legislatures and courts as well as by many text writers and as a result of such consideration there is a great variety of opinions. I shall in this dissertation direct my attention to the law as believe it be in California.
The Mystic Vision, Charles O. Lee
The Mystic Vision, Charles O. Lee
Graduate Thesis Collection
Pratt opens his work on The Psychology of Religious Beliefs by saying, "that if an atheistic inhabitent of Mars were to visit this planet, greater than the wonder of steam and electricity, would be the fact that we believe in a God whom we have never seen and cannot see". This universal belief in God is a striking thing and the question at once forces itself upon us, why do men believe as they do and what are the psychological bases underlying that belief?

James Barron Hope : Virginia's Poet-Laureate, Cullen S. Pitt
Master's Theses
Previous to the Civil War comparatively little literary work had been done in the south. Of course if we take into consideration all kinds of composition, such as narratives of adventure, diaries, histories, speeches, sermons and the like, we are forced to admit that the total amount was very large. But when we speak of literature in the higher and more restricted sense, we mean that which stimulates the imagination, awakens thought and aims to please as well as to instruct. And, using the word in this narrow and more restricted sense, it is quite evident that there had been …

The Sympathy And Understanding Of O. Henry, M. Bernard Rheude
The Sympathy And Understanding Of O. Henry, M. Bernard Rheude
Bachelors’ Theses
After all, the true test of a good story is not whether the teacher in English approves of it or not, or whether the critics in the magazines let it pass or not, but whether or not it appeals to the reader, - to the individual reader, and to groups and nations of readers. It seems to me, that now-a-days there is altogether too much unreality, if not dishonesty, in literary criticism. And this dishonesty and unreality have been injected into the minds of boys and girls by responsible professors of English in our high schools particularly. In the classroom, …
