Accustomed as we are today to paved highways, motor cars, steam railways, and airplanes it is difficult for us to picture the conditions of travel and transportation prevailing in Indiana in the early years of the last century. There were no canals, railroads, or pikes. All the streams except the Ohio were seriously obstructed by fallen trees, debris, snags, and sand bars. What wagon roads existed were frequently impassable and practically always bad.

To the layman the fort itself may seem unimportant, but when we stop to consider that it was an outpost of civilization penetrating the wilderness of Central California, offering shelter to those who pioneered before us; we must confess that its existence was necessary to protect and usher into full City-hood, the infant Sacramento, then known as New Helvetia.

Reactions Between The Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Willard Merle Farr

Observation of crystal growths resulting from the chemical interaction of stannous chloride and sodium arsenate in silicic acid gels revealed the following very interesting fact. Gels identical in every respect except acidity, contained crystal growths varying greatly in appearance.

The purpose of this investigation was, therefore, to allow stannous and arsenate ion to combine in a series of accurately prepared gels, identical in all respects except the acid content, and to observe the effect upon crystal growth of: (1) varying the acid concentration; and (2) varying the kind of acid

In presenting The Case for High School Dramatics the writer wishes, in advance, to be relieved of any charge of specious pleading. It is not maintained that the dramatic method offers a panacea for the teaching of English, for she is also an advocate of continuous drill in the fundamental processes.

This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Catechetical instruction in the Church dates from St. Paul, and is mentioned in his Epistles. Requirements for admission into the primitive Church were exacting and thorough. The writings of the Fathers, the ancient liturgies, and the decrees of the first Councils tell us that before their Baptism, the catechumens were obliged to learn by heart the Our Father and the Apostles' Cree, and had to be instructed in these formulas. In addition, special instruction was also given them regarding the Commandments and the Sacraments they were about to receive - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.
