Goethe, the great poet and Beethoven, the likewise great musician had known each other for a long time, but only from a distant. Beethoven, no doubt, had the greatest comprehension of the two. From his infancy he nourished himself with the works of Goethe. He read his works every day and finally Goethe occupied the place of Klopstock in his heart. Beethoven remarks, "Klopstock always wished to die and this happened very soon. Goethe, on the other hand, lived and we all must live with him. This is the reason that his works can be so easily set to music."

This thesis is a study of the history of Fort Larned Kansas covering the years 1859-1932. The establishment of forts and garrisons along the Old Santa Fe Trail, for the protection of emigrants and freighters to the new lands secured by the United States, as a consequence of the Mexican War, was commenced in the early fifties of the nineteenth century. These forts constituted a chain of defense from the Missouri River to the old town of Santa Fe, New Mexico. A sketch by Theodore R. Davis is included.

Dramatic poetry began but late in Spain, though it was to flower there so brilliantly. In Spain, as in France, England, and in fact in practically all other countries, the drama grew out of the liturgical cere¬ monies of the Church. Some of them, in particular the Passion and Nativity adapted themselves readily to stage presentations.
