At the excellent grammar school which he attended young Thomas was well-versed in the fundamentals of grammar and of writing besides being taught and reminded never to neglect the habit of rhyming. To these practices he was ever afterwards indebted and before his fifteenth birthday two of his lyrical verses were printed in a popular Dublin magazine.

Coleridge is generally recognized as a highly imaginative poet. Students are too prone therefore to regard his poetry as directly the product of his active imagination. It is the object of this study to show instead that his poetry is based largely upon his actual experiences.
