In discussing the Third Term Tradition, I have tried to compile a. history of the precedent rather than an argument for or against it. From Washington to Franklin Roosevelt many different viewoints and arguments have been advanced. Out of the wealth of material which is available I have attempted so far as possible to select impartially representative utterances on both sides of the question.

The purpose of this thesis is the (1) study of the band class methods in use, (2) a discussion of their effectiveness, (3) an original attempt to show how many of the problems of band methods can be solved.

It should be noted that a class of instrumental students may be a group of several or all different kinds of band instruments together. This study, however, will be concerned mainly with group instruction which combines all of the band instruments together. One of the most difficult problems for students of the teaching profession is that of formulating the best classroom procedure to follow under actual teaching conditions. Almost universally, young teachers find that the transition between their graduate period of training and their first position involves such a realignment of ideas in this regard as to be highly discouraging.

"Art," besides being art, "is also philosophy," Aldous Huxley says in Vulgarity in Literature. Throughout the years in which he has been writing, Huxley has never lost sight of this dictum. His philosophy has ever formed an integral part of all that he has produced, and especially has it been basic in his novels.

For several reasons Dos Passos is important to the development of American literature. His novels, with their integrity, breadth, and architectonic form, are painted on a larger canvas than any other American writers. In Manhattan Transfer, his fourth novel, he attempted to portray the greatest metropolis in the world, New York City. He succeeded as well as anyone ever has. Then, refusing to rest on his cars, he went on to the trilogy U. S. A., which takes all of twentieth century American life as its subject.
