In writing this thesis I have emphasized the qualities of vigor, ability and foresight that Churchill showed to such a statesmanlike degree in the last war, also the special technical training in ships, tanks, planes and their use that he gained. I have endeavored to point out in what ways these have qualified him for his role as Prime Minister of England in the present war. I have brought out his connections with American life through his family, his books and lectures, and his work as munitions minister. The purpose of this study is to present a history of "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse" and to show its contribution to modern poetry. The volumes of the magazine, the writings of the founder, Harriet Monroe, and criticisms from contemporary literary critics were read and used as sources for the history of "Poetry" and its contribution. From the study it was found that the poets of the last two decades of the nineteenth century had followed too closely the patterns used by the past generations to present the new life which was at hand. In this thesis I have given summaries and characterizations of the women characters in Eugene Gladstone O' Neill's plays of more than one act in the order of their writing. At the close of the summarizations and characterizations of the individual plays I have attempted to classify the women characters according to their personality types and their moral traits. All the plays with the exception of six, Bread and Butter, Servitude, Second Engineer or The Personal Equation, Now I Ask You, Ancient Mariner, and S.S. Glencairn are included in this study. In my thesis, I wish to present the story of my maternal grandmother as it is revealed in the lives of her thirteen children. I have been interested in the story since I can remember. My earliest memories are of sitting on Grandma’s lap and listening to tales of Indians on the warpath, of Kansas prairie sod houses and rattlesnakes, and of what my aunts, uncles, and my mother used to do when they were small. Frontier towns have developed along the same pattern. First, a lawless element ruled the locality with its threat of sudden death. Dead men, carried out with their boots on, gave mute proof to the skeptical that such threats were not idly given. Next, enterprising citizens, organizing in the dead of the night, brought some respect for decency and order by swinging one end of a rope over a projecting limb of a cottonwood tree and knotting the other end around the neck of a lawless ringleader. Border troubles got a late start in the southeastern section of Kansas Territory. The free-state cause had attained a slight supremacy in the territory by the time these troubles were well developed in Bourbon and Linn Counties. This loss of the territorial government perhaps made pro-slavery partisans more bitter and less reasonable than they should have been. Some of the worst elements of the earlier struggle in the north drifted into this section. Examples of these can be given in George W. Clark and John Brown.
