The history of the town as such is short--scarcely seventy years--but there was of course a long interval of sketchily recorded events prior to its foundation, in the area which immediately surrounds the site. In all, the period covered by this paper is about a century and three quarters; in that time the frontier post came and went, was succeeded by the tobacco town, and that too faded, leaving only shards and foundations to mark its place.

Also, we must admit distortion tor purposes of power, emotional strength, logical and organic consistency, and so forth. This introductory chapter contains definitions of obsessions and delusions, and examines the validity of these ideas as tragic devices. It discusses obsessions from the point of view of Freud and Jung.

The major plays of Eugene O’Neill have been divided into three psychological types: the first type we shall call the statement-of-the-problem plays; the second, the simple anima plays; the third, the complex anima plays. These terms and divisions will be explained as we proceed.

The object of the survey about to be described, was to establish the value of the artificial language test as a prognostic basis for language aptitude. Could the artificial language test be a reliable guide for determining a student's linguistic ability? Teachers have long needed something to give them an index to pupil's capabilities so as to meet better their needs in the class room. Counselors have wanted such tests to aid them in directing young people into channels of endeavor where they can best achieve success
