The time of Second Advent of Jesus Christ has been of interest to His followers throughout the Christian age, and from time to time, some have gone so far as to fix a date for the event. In doing so, they have looked to Bible prophecies for a clue to the time of Christ's return. Perhaps the outstanding period of date-setting was during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. During that time, there was a general advent awakening throughout the world. In general the emphasis has shifted from the development of mechanical skills through repetitive drill on formalized exercises, to the development of the whole child through participation in a broad field of pleasurable musical experiences. As indicated by the title, this study presents a history of Federal Legislation against Mormon polygamy prior to 1890 and of certain United States Supreme Court decisions supporting such legislation. Of necessity, the subject had to be limited, emphasis being placed upon three legislative acts and upon a few leading court decisions.

Our Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod through its Army and Navy Commission has fully recognized the great task of providing a spiritual ministry to the men in the armed forces. Therefore many Lutheran clergyman at the beginning of the war offered themselves cheerfully to preach Christ Crucified to these men who were about to die and to minister to them under every condition. The Army Chaplaincy offered the great opportunity to serve Christ and to minister to many blood-bought souls.

James Brown was born in Virginia in 1766, son of the reverend John Brown, a Presbyterian minister. He was educated in his father’s schools and at William and Mary College. Trained for the law, he mowed to Kentucky to be with his brother John. The latter, also a lawyer, was prominent, serving in the U. S. Senate, 1792-1806.
