Although Thomas Hood lived an uneventful and somewhat undramatic life, it was not entirely fruitless. His unparalleled misfortune in health and economy was scarcely offset by a felicitous family life; but his poetry--some inane, some mediocre, some excellent--balanced an otherwise pathetic existence. There has been no conscious attempt in this paper to present Thomas as an undiscovered genius. His works and his life have been evaluated for their peculiar merit alone, but a study of those has revealed points hitherto vague and misunderstood as well as forgotten.

The purpose of this survey is to make clear the plan, content, organization and work of public safety departments and their two main subdivisions, fire departments and police departments, in the United States. All cities within the population classes of 250,000 to 650,000 were canvassed. There are a total of twenty-eight cities within that category. Of these, a total of 15 cities replied fully or partially to the questionnaires. Municipalities replying to all three sections of the survey were: Birmingham, Alabama; Denver, Colorado; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Paul, Minnesota; Rochester, New York; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; San Antonio, Texas. …

Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. One of' the perplexing problems in the field of New Testament Introduction is the relationship of the first three Gospels to each other. A careful reading of these Gospels rcvea1s that they are much alike and seem to have much in common. There are many similar or strikingly similar events in all three. Then, too, there are clearcut differences. The Evangelists who wrote these Gospels tell us nothing concerning how their writings were related to each other. Luke alone says something about how his Gospel came to be written. Apostolic testimony on these three Gospels is something unknown to us.
