When Spain began her conquest of Central America in the early sixteenth century, she had to contend almost as much with geography as with Indian resistance. The Mayas opposed the Spanish with both the strengths and weaknesses of a decentralized civilization. There was no center to be conquered such as Tenochtitlán in the Aztec Empire, and where the submission of some tribal groups might be peaceful, others singly or in coalition gave stubborn resistance.

We shall likewise present the reason for this fact, namely, that some teachings and many practices of the Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala were taken over directly from the Indian religions. Galdós, perhaps better than anyone else, caught the real spirit of Spain. He knew intimately Spain and her people. He thoughtfully examined the character of the Spaniard, and weighed his good qualities and his bad. The novelist's aim was always to bring to the attention of Spain her strong points and her defects, that she might build on the former and rid herself of the latter. Thus, his novels are directed at social and psychological reform. He wanted to create a new national consciousness, based on a combination of the old virtues and the new ideas.

This study of E. E. Cummings poetry will consist largely of an examination of those qualities of his verse which are peculiar to it, which particularize it as the work of one post. The particularities of Cummings verse are, however, of a dual nature--at once experimental and traditional. Most frequently the experimental aspects are grounded in some tradition, and as a rule his best verse reveals little of the eccentric manifestations of the experimental and reflects an individual yet traditional style.

Bursum of New Mexico introduced the first of a series of bills for that purpose, to June 7, 1924, when the last of this series became law. That curiously titled incident, "The War of Jenkins' Ear," has received varied treatment by historians. It has been a challenge to the justifiers of English imperialism, and it has attracted those interested in early colonial policies and lovers of the piquant. The earliest historians interested in the war were preoccupied with Jenkins and the ear itself. Later historians stressed the international causes of the war--the colonial commercial and territorial dissension between England and Spain--the two protagonists in the war.
