A Proposed Plan And Curriculum For Teacher-Training In The Oregon-Washington Conference Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, Robert D. Bennett Apr 1952

A Proposed Plan And Curriculum For Teacher-Training In The Oregon-Washington Conference Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, Robert D. Bennett

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Throughout its history, the work of the Sunday School has been willingly carried out by corps of godly, voluntary workers. The major portion of the educational efforts of the Church has fallen upon this agency. These volunteers have carried on their work with little training in educational principles and techniques. They have had but little more personal training in the systematic study of the Bible, the history of the Church, and its doctrines. God has honored these sincere, conscientious efforts with a measure of success which has resulted largely from native ability. In order that future efforts might be more …

Carl Van Vechten And The Twenties: Literature, Society And The Arts, Edward G. Lueders Apr 1952

Carl Van Vechten And The Twenties: Literature, Society And The Arts, Edward G. Lueders

American Studies ETDs

It is seldom that a critical assessment of a writer's work can even attempt to be definitive during the writer's lifetime. It is even more rare when that writer continues as an active observer, participant and contributor in the humanities for two decades after publishing his last book and publicly announcing his retirement from writing. But such a writer is Carl Van Vechten. His first volume was published in 1915, his last in 1932. In those seventeen years he produced nineteen volumes, ten of them collections of essays on music and the arts, two devoted to the lore of the …

Virginia, The Pioneer In Historical Markers, Julian Murry Howell Apr 1952

Virginia, The Pioneer In Historical Markers, Julian Murry Howell

Master's Theses

In beginning a study of' Virginia's historical markers it is well to review the economic background which provided tho necessary impetus to initiate the program. The introduction of more labor saving devices, shorter hours of work, improved transportation facilities, and better tourist accommodations, had encouraged the spending of newly acquired leisure in travel. The economic advantages to be gained in having tourists spend more time in our State became increasingly evident as Chambers of Commerce and other public spirited organizations became aware of the need of improving and enlarging their own communities. This awakening to the advantages which were to …

History Of Richmond As A Port City, Myrtle Elizabeth Callahan

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study has been to trace the evolution and course of Richmond as a port city from its beginning date, its period of gradual growth, the years of peak activity in the nineteenth century, the beginning of its decline in world trade, the subsequent renaissance of the port, followed by a recent decline at the present time, pointing out factors which brought it about and contributed to each of these stages.

A Treatment Of Plant Life In Eighteenth-Century Poetry, William Melvin Maxey Apr 1952

A Treatment Of Plant Life In Eighteenth-Century Poetry, William Melvin Maxey

Master's Theses

A critic of English literature, writing about nature in poetry, has said that the subject-matter ot poetry may be divided into three main groups: man, God, and nature. This paper is primarily concerned with the last division, and more especially with a treatment of plant life in eighteenth-century poetry. Such a treatment must of necessity require wide reading and careful selection of the material to be covered, since the chief aim of the writer is to present the subject in such a manner that it is representative of the whole period of English poetry from 1700 to 1800.

Ernest Hemingway, A Writer Of Episodes, Robert Alexander Chermside Jr. Apr 1952

Ernest Hemingway, A Writer Of Episodes, Robert Alexander Chermside Jr.

Master's Theses

In this thesis my purpose is to analyze and review some of Hemingway's episodes and short scenes, which I believe to be his most valuable work, in order that their value may become evident. I then intend to show that the author's novels are in most cases dependent on these episodes for their literary success. In accomplishing this, it would be useless to consider everything Hemingway has written. I shall deal only with his fiction and shall confine myself to selections which most amply illustrate my point.

History Of Fort Union, New Mexico, Thomas J. Mclaughlin Mar 1952

History Of Fort Union, New Mexico, Thomas J. Mclaughlin

History ETDs

Through the acquisition of the Territory of New Mexico, the United States fell heir to a problem different from any that it had encountered in any previous advance of the frontier. During the settlement of the area east of the Mississippi River it made little difference where, or how many, military posts were established once the plenitude of navigable rivers made their supply and upkeep a relatively inexpensive matter. The fertile lands of the region soon enabled a settlement to develop near the post which provided protection and a market for the surplus of a growing community. Within a few …

Brazilian-American Cooperation: 1940-1945, Oscar Matasar Feb 1952

Brazilian-American Cooperation: 1940-1945, Oscar Matasar

History ETDs

In looking retrospectively at the scope and nature of Brazilian-American cooperation during the war years, 1939-1945, one finds confirmation again of the traditional friendship of the two nations. This friendship, which began in the early history of Brazil as an independent nation, found many avenues of mutual expression. While the United States had in prospect evaluated Brazil's strategic position geographically, her expectations for economic help were more than realized by Brazil's readiness and ability to give timely and valuable aid. That both nations mutually benefited there can be no doubt. Each by helping the other had in effect made for …

Cleopolis And Persepolis; A Comparison Of Marlowe And Spenser., Edith H. Peterson Jan 1952

Cleopolis And Persepolis; A Comparison Of Marlowe And Spenser., Edith H. Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to compare Marlowe and Spenser in a number of specific attitudes and achievements as poetic interpreters of the other primarily dramatic, I am not comparing specific works of each as literary types, or contrasting the men in their lives or specific relationships to other literary individuals. The thesis will deal, then, with direct indebtedness and interplay between the work if the two men and with comparison and contrasts in their poetic treatment of the following themes: 1) The role of the leader of men in shaping society. 2)The role of women as an ideal …

Predestination In Chaucer's Tales, Marie Sommerville Jan 1952

Predestination In Chaucer's Tales, Marie Sommerville

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis proposes to examine how, according to Chaucer, human lives seem to be directed and how individuals in their thoughts and deeds reach toward this direction. Through this examination of Chaucer's characters, the thesis hopes to help in an understanding and appreciation of the Canterbury Tales. It is clear that Chaucer made fairly consistent use of a system of cause and effect explained by Boethius and others, and an examination of the Tales in relation to that system enriches their meaning and adds to one's appreciation of Chaucer as an artist.

A Comparative Study Of The Problem Of Evil As Set Forth In The Views Of John W. Fletcher, Edgar Sheffield Brightman, And Edwin Lewis, Norman A. Riggins Jan 1952

A Comparative Study Of The Problem Of Evil As Set Forth In The Views Of John W. Fletcher, Edgar Sheffield Brightman, And Edwin Lewis, Norman A. Riggins

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Problem of Evil stands as one of the major topics of Philosophy and Theology throughout the history of thought. The very nature of evil is elusive to the unaided human reason, and presents much room for speculation. This does not minimize the problem for, "In a day such as this, men and women are seriously troubled with the problem of evil." The fact of evil cannot be escaped, therefore it is of prime importance to all who attempt to think through on the major problems of life. Evil is around us on every hand. "We try to ignore it …

World Government As Envisioned In The Latter-Day Saint "City Of Zion.", Hyrum Leslie Andrus Jan 1952

World Government As Envisioned In The Latter-Day Saint "City Of Zion.", Hyrum Leslie Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saints look forward to an era of righteous peace under a world government having its central seats of authority in the City of Zion which is to be built upon the American continent and in Jerusalem upon the eastern hemisphere. (The probelm of this thesis is limited more specifically to the development of Zion's branch of this world order.) The earliest accounts of their history give information relating to basic principles and doctrines which have consistently developed to form a relatively complete concept of principles inherent within this proposed organization. This movement, designated as the "cause of Zion" …

Emma Hale: Wife Of The Prophet Joseph Smith, Raymond T. Bailey Jan 1952

Emma Hale: Wife Of The Prophet Joseph Smith, Raymond T. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this thesis concerns itself with the questions: Why did Emma Smith oppose the men who were in the leading council of the Church and who were the closest friends of her husband? What was her attitude towards the Church her husband founded? What kind of woman was she, and what effect did she have upon her husband and the Church he organized?

It will be the purpose of this thesis to point out some significant facts pertaining to these questions, garthered in the main, from primary sources such as the Journal History of the Church of Jesus …

History Of Utah State Prison 1850-1952, James B. Hill Jan 1952

History Of Utah State Prison 1850-1952, James B. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present a general history of Utah State Prison in order that a record of that institution may be preserved. This phase of Utah history has long been neglected. It is hoped that a contribution has also been made to a better understanding of Utah's penal system.

The present penal system in use in the state of Utah had its beginning with the early Mormon settlements in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The first laws and judicial bodies of the Mormons were very closely tied to their religious beliefs. The handling of criminals was …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Financial Status And The Certificated Personnel Of Selected Elementary School Districts Of San Joaquin County, John William Hartnett Jr. Jan 1952

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Financial Status And The Certificated Personnel Of Selected Elementary School Districts Of San Joaquin County, John William Hartnett Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

with the widespread issuance of emergency credentials to elementary teachers in the state of California, much discussion has arisen concerning employment practices in the school districts. It has been asserted that some administrators and governing boards of schools have employed lesser qualified teachers for their districts in order to keep expenses low. It is conceivable that such practice might weaken professional standards and give rise to the employmant of teachers solely on their cost to the district rather than to their qualifications

David Whitmer, A Witness To The Divine Authenticity Of The Book Of Mormon, Ebbie L.V. Richardson Jan 1952

David Whitmer, A Witness To The Divine Authenticity Of The Book Of Mormon, Ebbie L.V. Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, DAVID WHITMER, A WITNESS TO THE DIVINE AUTHENTICITY OF THE BOOK OF MORMON, is an attempt to give an unbiased history of the life and religious activities of a man who spent fifty years apart from the Church he was so much an instrument in establishing. His testimony has been a considerable factor in promoting its growth and success. The title of this work was suggested by a text Mr. Whitmer wrote in the year previous to his demise; the subject, by A. William Lund, assistant Latter-day Saint Church Historian.
Particular emphasis has been placed upon that phase …

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr. Jan 1952

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

Of the great unsettled problems of archaeology and anthropology perhaps the most hotly debated has been the relative importance of migration, diffusion, and independent invention in the origin of culture elements. The question has obvious importance, both for a proper understanding of man and culture, that ambitiously comprehensive goal of modern anthropology, and for historical reconstruction, the latter a necessary preliminary of the former.

The concern of this thesis is with culture movement in the eastern Pacific Ocean area. The Pacific area as a whole has long been the geographical center of the diffusion problem (if we may so term …

A Study Of The Literary Qualities In The Diary Of Hosea Stout, Richard G. Ellsworth Jan 1952

A Study Of The Literary Qualities In The Diary Of Hosea Stout, Richard G. Ellsworth

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to present the diaries of Hosea Stout in the light of literary criticism and analysis. Two questions have been asked: do the diaries contain literary quality by revealing the characteristics, attitudes, abilities, and feelings of Hosea Stout; and, does Hosea Stout's style contain the literary elements necessary to distinquish it from ordinary communication. Passages from the diaries have been quoted and analyzed to answer these questions. Conclusions are made after each analysis, after each chapter, and at the end of the thesis.

This study revealed that, in spite of Hosea Stout's spelling difficulties and …

Problems And Progress In The Development Of Girls' Education In India, Rozaline Jean Cleaveland Jan 1952

Problems And Progress In The Development Of Girls' Education In India, Rozaline Jean Cleaveland

Graduate Thesis Collection

In a country where only 2.53 per cent of the female population is literate, the importance of education for girls cannot be overestimated. India, being freed from British Rule in 1947, is now an independent self-governing nation. In its draft constitution it has accepted the democratic way of life. Democracy postulates an equality of opportunity for every individual to develop his abilities to the fullest extent and to be able to play his proper role in society. Therefore, in Indian today women have equal opportunity with men guaranteed by the constitution; and, in order to exercise this libety with an …
