The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen Jan 1959

The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The history of Mormonism reveals that almost from its beginning, the new church was to be not only a basis for an ecclesiastical Kingdom of God but for a temporal Kingdom as well. This temporal Kingdom, never fully realized, was to develop into a political state preparatory to the inauguration of the Apocalyptic Kingdom. Ultimately, this Kingdom was to rule the whole world.

Theory and practice did not always merge in the organization and administration of this Kingdom. When Joseph Smith organized the nucleus of a political government for the Kingdom of God in 1844 it became rather obvious that …

A Five Month Experimental Study On The Therapeutic Use Of Music With Mentally Deficient Children, Sara Mae Peterson Jan 1959

A Five Month Experimental Study On The Therapeutic Use Of Music With Mentally Deficient Children, Sara Mae Peterson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Ways to train and to aid the mentally deficient child to reach his maximum potential are now important problems that must be answered, for this atypical child is finding an increased acceptance into this world of the normal. The belief that all children should have guided and creative musical experience and that the mentally deficient child should be considered as a child first initiated this study. This thesis is a report of the work of the investigator and of the observations and findings which developed out of the project.

The Chinese Community In Malaya, Singapore And British Borneo, Ralph E. Lierheimer Jan 1959

The Chinese Community In Malaya, Singapore And British Borneo, Ralph E. Lierheimer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Chinese community in Malaya, Singapore, and British Borneo, as in all of Southeast Asia, is in the early stages of a radical change. This ethnic group, which already holds virtual control of the economy of these three regions, is now finding it necessary to also reach out for political representation, or even political control, in order to preserve its place in local society.

Such participation in local affairs constitutes a great change for a group which has always maintained an orientation toward China, socially and politically, wherever its individuals might happen to live. The process of change is bound …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Concept Of Individuality In The Thought Of C.G Jung And Sri Aurobindo, Richard Putnam Marsh Jan 1959

A Comparative Analysis Of The Concept Of Individuality In The Thought Of C.G Jung And Sri Aurobindo, Richard Putnam Marsh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Various issues engage the attention of thinkers during various eras in history. Among those which have occupied commentators on the contemporary state of humanity are the problem of individuality--its origin, its nature, its significance for mankind as a whole--and a problem not unrelated to this: namely, the question of what may result from a cross fertilization of Eastern and Western ways of thought

Philip De La Mare, Pioneer Industrialist, Leon R. Hartshorn Jan 1959

Philip De La Mare, Pioneer Industrialist, Leon R. Hartshorn

Philip De La Mare was born 1823, in the village of Grouville, Island of Jersey, of the Channel Islands. His father and grandfather were contractors who built piers. Philip received a common school education and while in his youth learned the trade of blacksmith and mechanic. In 1847, Philip De La Mare's father contracted to build the Albert Pier on Jersey Island. Philip was associated with his father on the contract. A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee Jan 1959

A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee

Theses and Dissertations

Since the issuance of the Manifesto by President Wilford Woodruff on September 25, 1890, discontinuing the practice of plural marriage by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, intensive efforts have been made by dissenters to show that authority to practice polygamy has secretly continued to the present day. Claiming that the Church departed from its original teachings when it discontinued the practice of plural marriage and that the Manifesto was adopted merely as an act of appeasement, "fundamentalists" have attempted to show that the doctrine of plural marriage was revealed to the Latter-day Saints as an irrevocable decree, …

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts Jan 1959

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts

Theses and Dissertations

In 1847 the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake valley, bringing with them their own court system, which was to be their main resource for litigation for the next two years. The Church courts which were set up after 1847 proved insufficient, and in 1849 a need was felt for civil courts which could be used in the litigation with Gentile emigrants that were passing through the valley. To solve this problem, the State of Deseret was formed on March 12, 1849, giving the valley a civil authority. This was to last less than two years, for on September …

Mormon Indian Missions - 1855, Wesley R. Law Jan 1959

Mormon Indian Missions - 1855, Wesley R. Law

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the L.D.S. philosophy concerning the origin and destiny of the American Indians, Brigham Young felt the gospel should be taught to the various Indian tribes. Thus, at the spring semi-annual conference of the Church in 1855, a number of men were called as missionaries and assigned to establish five Indian missions. Four of these, Elk Mountain, Las Vegas, White Mountain, and Salmon River, were in or near the Utah-Idaho region and the fifth was in the Indian Territory.

Similarities And Differences In The Anabaptist Restitution And The Mormon Restoration, Robert J. Mccue Jan 1959

Similarities And Differences In The Anabaptist Restitution And The Mormon Restoration, Robert J. Mccue

Theses and Dissertations

This study has been prompted by the apparently similar claims of the Sixteenth century Anabaptists and the Nineteenth century Mormons of having effected a restoration of the "True Church" after a period of complete apostacy in Christendom. It has attempted to ascertain the extent to whcih these claims actually are similar by comparing the teachings of the two movements regarding the characteristics of the "True Church."

The History Of Public Education In Daggett County, Utah, And Adjacent Areas, Donald Weir Baxter Jan 1959

The History Of Public Education In Daggett County, Utah, And Adjacent Areas, Donald Weir Baxter

Theses and Dissertations

The region under study in this report consists of Daggett County, Utah, the northwestern section of Moffat County, Colorado, and the southwestern area of Sweetwater, Wyoming. It is an area about fifty miles in length and seventeen miles in width, with a population of some four hundred and fifty persons in 1950. The economy was based upon agriculture which prevented the growth of large towns and determined a characteristic of a sparse population living in a comparatively large area. Isolated from Utah by a huge mountain range, the people of Daggett County were closer, in many respects, to the affairs …

A Historical Study Of The Congressional Career, John T. Caine, Judith Ann Roderick

Theses and Dissertations

John T. Caine, an adept leader in the national and local political arena, was one of the best known and most highly respected men in Utah during the territorial era. Very early in his life he assumed an active role in politics and became one of the early leaders of the Democratic Party in Utah. From the time of his initial election in 1882 as the territorial delegate until his retirement in 1893, he labored in behalf of his constituents. No task proved to be too tiresome or laborious; industry, honesty, and sober self-reliance were personal characteristics of the man …

Nellie Nash: (A Pioneer Biography Of Mrs. Ellen Elvira Nash Parkinson Wife Of William Chandler Parkinson), Carma L. Sandberg Jan 1959

Nellie Nash: (A Pioneer Biography Of Mrs. Ellen Elvira Nash Parkinson Wife Of William Chandler Parkinson), Carma L. Sandberg

Theses and Dissertations

In the writings of mankind there are far more biographies of men than of women. In the histories of the lives of Utah's pioneers the biographical accounts of the pioneer men far outnumber those of pioneer women. Few of these men have been successful without the help of a woman, be she wife or mother, or both. This thesis concerns itself with one of these unsung help-mates.
The events of a wife's life are so interwoven with the events of her husband's life that to write about one must necessitate writing about the other. This writing attempts to maintain the …

The Intellectual Identity Of James Branch Cabell, Tom Towers Oct 1958

The Intellectual Identity Of James Branch Cabell, Tom Towers

English Language and Literature ETDs

The literary career of James Branch Cabell is as strange as any in the entire history of American letters; certainly it is unparalleled in the twentieth century. The nation's most famous critics, within a single decade, lionized and anathematized Cabell to extents seldom matched in the criticism of this century. For a time, every American with any intellectual ambitions read eagerly each new Cabell novel; and then, almost at the moment of Cabell's greatest popularity, the very critics who had made him an international literary figure suddenly saw in him a villain responsible for the appalling emptiness of American literature, …

Bachata By Gail Kubik Transcribed For Wind Ensemble, Harry Leonard Hansen Sep 1958

Bachata By Gail Kubik Transcribed For Wind Ensemble, Harry Leonard Hansen

Music ETDs

One of the pressing problems in public education today is to find ways to meet individual differences in students. Music education is no exception and, indeed, here the problem may be more acute because of group performance. Thus the instrumental teacher must constantly search to find music in such form as to be readily usable by his group.

William Allen White: The Respectable Rebel, John Dewitt Mckee Sep 1958

William Allen White: The Respectable Rebel, John Dewitt Mckee

American Studies ETDs

To understand the growth of William Allen White from a spokesman for the business-in-government conservatism of Mark Hanna to leadership in the revolt of the middle-class liberals one has to see him in the surroundings of the society into which he was born, to examine parental influence, and to realize the importance of the ideas he absorbed in his schooling and in his early journalistic training. It is also necessary, in explaining White's rebellion against the conservatism of his youth, to take into full account the impact of Theodore Roosevelt's personality on the life of William Allen White.

Hispanic American Vanguard Poetry (1916-1925), C.A.W. Capsas Aug 1958

Hispanic American Vanguard Poetry (1916-1925), C.A.W. Capsas

Latin American Studies ETDs

The modernist literary movement in Hispanic America, occurring during a thirty-year period beginning in 1888, was the first clear demonstration of the regions capacity for original literary expression of universal significance. Yet the student, at least one in Mexico or in the United States, is repeatedly impressed by the fact that, while the Modernist opinion movement had been understood (and consequently "professed" well), there is a broad variance of opinion on Post-Modernist development.

A History Of The Richmond, Virginia, Fire Department, Donald Lee Morecock Aug 1958

A History Of The Richmond, Virginia, Fire Department, Donald Lee Morecock

Master's Theses

Firefighting has become a potentially dangerous profession one and one which has become more and more scientific as the years have passed. In early, days, when more of the human element was involved in those organizations devoted to fire protection, the fire house was a gathering place for town politicians, retired workers, and for those who, while not firemen themselves, were continually fascinated by the deeds of daring performed by those who manned the hose. In this paper, the author has attempted to give a picture of fire fighting in Richmond from the very earliest tiems up to the Fire …

The purpose of this study has been to write a biography on the life of the versatile William Wines Phelps in conjunction with his contributions to and influence on the issues and problems of Mormon Pioneer History from Kirtland, Ohio, to the Great Basin.

Prior to the year 1831, W.W. Phelps was active in the State of New York as an Anti-Masonic newspaper editor. The Anti-Masonic movement had grown out of the political enviornment that existed throughout the nation and especially in the State of New York during that period of time.

During the year of 1831, W.W. Phelps completely …

A Study Of Political Parties In Virginia During The Civil War, David Mason Armbrister Jul 1958

A Study Of Political Parties In Virginia During The Civil War, David Mason Armbrister

Master's Theses

The purpose in writing this paper is to advance an opinion, one cushioned by actual factual findings brought forth in the course of research and study . This opinion holds that with the emergence of the Confederate States of America, and the ultimate inclusion of the state of Virginia in this confederation, political parties, as such, were stamped beneath the feet of marching soldiers and a patriotic, zealous citizenry, which was too concerned with the immediate state of war and their desire to secure independence from the "yankee" tyrants under their "dictator" Lincoln, to devote attention to matters of political …

The Dramatic Art Of Guillén De Castro, Dorothea Thompson Powers Jun 1958

The Dramatic Art Of Guillén De Castro, Dorothea Thompson Powers

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Summing up the discussion will be the main conclusions reached about the art of Castro as a dramatist. These conclusions can be briefly expressed as follows: (1) the basic structure of the plays, and Castro's ideals and motivations, had their inception in the Valencian theater of his youth; (2) the main contribution of the Lopean comedia was to teach him the techniques for attaining greater unity of action and to instruct him in the uses of humor; (3) Castro's greatest inspiration came from popular sources such as the romancero, rather than from learned works; (4) his work is exceedingly subjective; …

A History Of The Italians In New Mexico, Frederick G. Bohme Jun 1958

A History Of The Italians In New Mexico, Frederick G. Bohme

American Studies ETDs

Several years ago one of Albuquerque's long-time Italian-American residents remarked, "I feel like a big fellow here... I am glad I came- back there [in Italy] I would still be a little fellow." Although Italians represent one of the largest sources of American immigration, they have never comprised more than six-tenths of one percent of New Mexico's population. They are important, nevertheless, because next to natives of Mexico they comprise the largest foreign-born group in the state. They are significant because Italian churchman and Italian settlers, more than any others, provided a "bridge" between the Anglo-Saxon and Hispano cultures found …
