This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier Jun 1959

This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper aims to indicate the importance of the background against which our Lord instituted the Sacrament of His Body and His Blood for a proper understanding of the meaning and intention of the words "This do in remembrance of Me." A formulation or approach to a doctrine of the Lord's Supper which proposes to be Biblical cannot be content merely to reiterate the Verba Testamenti in a conflated form and then propose to have exhausted the meaning of "this do". Nor can a formulation which all but ignores the total Sitz im Leben of the scriptural records fail to …

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin Jun 1959

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.

The Medieval Sequence And Troupe, John Lemkul Jun 1959

The Medieval Sequence And Troupe, John Lemkul

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis primarily is an historical research into the origin and development of. the sequence and the trope. From the Table or Contents it may appear that the order of the chapters is a little unusual, for one usually expects an historical account to be presented in chronological order. But because of what we know and what we do not know about the sequence and trope, the outline of the paper begins with the known and proceeds to the unknown. That is why both the sections on the sequence and the trope begin at the Abbey of St. Gall …

A Selected Bibliography Suitable For Use In Overseas Missionary Nursing Preparation, Anna May Vaughan Jun 1959

A Selected Bibliography Suitable For Use In Overseas Missionary Nursing Preparation, Anna May Vaughan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Missionary nursing, as one form of nursing and as a method of endeavor, has been neglected in both nursing and mission literature.

It was the purpose of this study to identify, classify, and list bibliographical material which is applicable and would serve as a source of information to those preparing for, and directing others towards, overseas mission nursing.

The material for the bibliography was obtained through three sources (1) twenty-five institutions of religious education which offered courses in missions, (2) personal interviews, and (3) personal library research. The volumes included in this bibliography were selected on the basis of the …

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee Jun 1959

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy. Employing the Somogyi-Nelson method, their glycemic activity was studied in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Stress reactions were minimized. The effect …

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal Jun 1959

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal

Honors Theses

The northern branch of the Nansemond abounds in scenery of the most picturesque and romantic description, and is well deserving the attention of Nature's admirers. The stream is of fresh water, winding some three or four miles in a northwesterly direction from Suffolk, and its average width is about fifty feet. In ascending its intricate windings, you are surprised at the different aspects presented to view. In some instances, the tall and majestic junipers are entirely submerged at the base, and, as you proceed, an elevation will suddenly appear, as if by magic, rising perpendicularly from the river at least …

A Biography Of Z. T. Sweeney, Robert E. Reeves Jun 1959

A Biography Of Z. T. Sweeney, Robert E. Reeves

Graduate Thesis Collection

Zachary Taylor Sweeney was one of the more popular and influential preachers of the Christian Church during the last quarter of the nineteenth century and first quarter of the twentieth century. He built the largest congregation of his brotherhood during his lifetime. He was one of the leading spokesmen of the conservative element of the Disciples during a very troubled period. Outside of church affairs he became prominent in political, governmental, chautauqua, and business circles.

A Very Human Fear, Joseph Ferguson Jun 1959

A Very Human Fear, Joseph Ferguson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Perhaps there are some who will agree with me when I say that the first half of the century has witnessed the greatest flourishing of English poetry in the history of our language. Yet I am forced to add, paradoxically, that never has an age been more indifferent to poetry than our own. Naturally enough, the effect has been disheartening to many of our great geniuses.

The Eschatology Of The Lutheran Symbols, Walter Pieper Jun 1959

The Eschatology Of The Lutheran Symbols, Walter Pieper

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For some years there has been a renewed interest in eschatology. A specific treatment of eschatology from the Lutheran point of view, however, is still lacking. With the exception of Schlink and Brunstaed, neither of whose treatment is completely adequate, nothing has been written on the subject of the -eschatological expectation found in the Lutheran Symbols. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to draw the eschatological references from the Symbols to discover how the writers looked at that which lay beyond this life and how this expectancy related to their presentation of the faith.

Athanasius' Doctrine; Of The Incarnation In Light Of Its Historical Context As Reflected In De Incarnatione, Carl Volz Jun 1959

Athanasius' Doctrine; Of The Incarnation In Light Of Its Historical Context As Reflected In De Incarnatione, Carl Volz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the author’s hope that this study will not only serve to remind the reader that Arianism is latent in the Church at all times, but will also serve to emphasize the Pauline and Athanasian stress of Christus in nobis. Although the Western Church has grown with the Pauline doctrine of forensic salvation, particularly since the time of Luther, the Athanasian conceptions of the Incarnation are just as purely Pauline, Christ becoming man in order to draw men to God. The fact that a justification fidei is foreign to his way of thinking ought in no way detract from …

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh Jun 1959

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is, therefore, the fundamental teaching about man. in the Pre-Mosaic revelation that is dealt with in this thesis. This study will treat both individual man and a group of Men, viz., a society. It is plain from the previous explanation that this study is not limited by the traditional dogmatic division of Christian anthropology. It is a synthetic or systematic exegesis instead of the familiar consecutive exegesis, chapter by chapter, as presented in commentaries. This material will be collected under five cardinal themes on the doctrine of man in Genesis, with each theme displaying disparities and sim1larities or opinion …

Children And The Church's Worship, George Hoyer Jun 1959

Children And The Church's Worship, George Hoyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The burden of the thesis will be to ask how these Christians who are not adults can be helped to receive the grace of the Word of God; how they can be helped to respond to Him in worshiping words that will be a prelude to a worshiping life; and how they can learn to recognize their worshiping brethren in the family of God; ultimately how they can learn to do this applying of the Word from Sacrament and Scripture, this replying of worship and, this supplying of edification in the Church's corporate worship and in the Church's Eucharistic service.

The Concepts Of Unity, Fellowship, And Cooperation Among Various Lutheran Bodies In America, Carl Bornmann Jun 1959

The Concepts Of Unity, Fellowship, And Cooperation Among Various Lutheran Bodies In America, Carl Bornmann

Its relationships with non-Lutheran: Christian bodies will also be summarized. An extensive treatment will not be given to this second aspect, however, since this topic has been exhaustively ·treated in a Bachelor of Divinity Thesis under ·this very subject; heading.

Henry Miller: A Semi-Critical Approach, Gilbert Neiman May 1959

Henry Miller: A Semi-Critical Approach, Gilbert Neiman

English Language and Literature ETDs

I have often been asked, when a person learns that I have had more than a reading acquaintance with Henry Miller, why Mr. Miller uses such language and describes such scenes. I have always wanted to quote in reply a passage which I seem never to be able to quote verbatim but which I now take this opportunity of copying out word for word from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell:

I then asked Ezekial why he eat dung, & lay so long on his right & left side? he answer'd, "the desire of raising other men into …

Agitators: Long, Townsend, And Coughlin Versus The New Deal--1932 Through 1936, Richard L. Lunt May 1959

Agitators: Long, Townsend, And Coughlin Versus The New Deal--1932 Through 1936, Richard L. Lunt

History ETDs

In the first years of the Great Depression of the 1930's there were many political agitators of a near lunatic nature whose demagogic appeal found a sympathetic ear among troubled Americans. Probably the most significant of these agitators were Huey Long, Father Charles E. Coughlin, and Dr. Francis E. Townsend. Certainly they were the only ones who succeeded in a anyway to promote their particular causes on a national scale. In addition, these three men, or their followers, attempted to unite into a Union Party in 1936.

If these men were of any political significance, they should have either aided …

The Social Individual: Social Criticism In The Writings Of James Thurber, Arthur M. Kompass May 1959

The Social Individual: Social Criticism In The Writings Of James Thurber, Arthur M. Kompass

English Language and Literature ETDs

It may seem unfitting to base a polemical thesis on the writings of a humorist. Most of us read humor solely for entertainment, when we are tired of quidities and want escape from problems. We look to other forms of writing for social and philosophical critiques. Moreover, we are often reluctant to account the teller of funny stories a reliable source for information about reality. Serious writers carry with them a background of straight forward facts. They furnish their own documentation. But, a humorist, though he often finds the concrete detail the best building stone for his humor, frequently seems …

A Study Of Taos As An Art Colony And Of Representative Taos Painters, Dorothy Skousen Black

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is a study of Taos as an art colony, a subject about which little has been written…Consequently, the best method of research appeared to be interviews with the living painters associated with Taos.

A Philosophy Of Religious Authority, G. Richard Powell May 1959

A Philosophy Of Religious Authority, G. Richard Powell

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The object of this study is to explore the philosophical basis of religious authority. The intent is to set forth an apology for the pre-eminence of the Christian faith according to the popularly-designated "evangelical" interpretation. There is recognized in the oft-repeated usage of the term "evangelical" within ecclesiastical circles a certain ambiguity of understanding. The purpose of its employment here is to establish a working basis with the intention that particular distinctions will become apparent in the text of the study.

A History Of The Kentucky Mountain Mission Work Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, David W. Weinert May 1959

A History Of The Kentucky Mountain Mission Work Of The Evangelical United Brethren Church, David W. Weinert

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Throughout its history, the Evangelical Church has always been concerned for the underprivileged and unreached. Through a comprehensive survey of the needs of the mountains of Kentucky, it was decided that this was a logical place to do missionary service. The underprivileged of the mountains of Kentucky had long since been neglected. The Evangelical Church accepted that area to further its Missionary enterprises.

This paper was written with three objectives in view. First, the writer desired a better understanding of the work which is part of the missionary outreach of his denomination. Secondly, the writer hopes some day to become …

A Critique Of Adult Christian Education, Paul Kuhn May 1959

A Critique Of Adult Christian Education, Paul Kuhn

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Until a few years ago the age group known as young adults was a neglected area in Christian Education. Today there is an increased awareness and interest in the need for adequate young adult Christian Education in the local church.

The distinctive mark of the American society is the young married couple and its family. A glance at the many advertisements shows that they are keyed to young adults. But the church, until very recently, has made little difference in the grading of adults. Because the interests and needs of adults are so widespread young adults often feel that there …

A Study Of Paul's Interpretation Of The Old Testament With Particular Reference To His Use Of Isaiah In The Letter To The Romans, James A. Field May 1959

A Study Of Paul's Interpretation Of The Old Testament With Particular Reference To His Use Of Isaiah In The Letter To The Romans, James A. Field

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One of the most obvious characteristics of the New Testament which greets the eyes of even the casual reader is its great dependence upon the Old Testament. Words, phrases, topics, personalities, and events from the Old Testament are carried forward into the New on almost every one of its pages. It has often been stated that neither of the Testaments can be understood apart from the other. Centuries ago Augustine declared that, "The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old is made plain in the New."

The dependence of the New Testament upon the Old is especially …

A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder May 1959

A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Bible as a whole establishes the doctrine of sin. The New Testament doctrine of sin is developed on the foundation of the Old Testament doctrine of sin. Paul and John speak particularly on the doctrine of sin as a whole. So a study of their doctrine of sin would contribute to a total Biblical understanding. The problem of this study is the Biblical doctrine of sin limited to the New Testament writers, John and Paul, as they speak of the doctrine of sin, in relation to the doctrine of sin as a whole. Since the problem concerns the doctrine …

A New Inductive Study Of The First Epistle Of John, Gary M. Higbee May 1959

A New Inductive Study Of The First Epistle Of John, Gary M. Higbee

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

It is the never-ending task of Christian scholarship to interpret the sacred Scriptures in the light of an increasing understanding of the situation contemporary to their writing. The task is attempted anew in each generation, and no single pronouncement upon a given book is accepted as final. The men of each generation desire also to interpret the Scriptures so that they speak relevantly to their own day. Such is the task of this study.

A Critical And Comparative Analysis Of John Calvin's And The Early Friends' Doctrine Of The Word Of God, Peter R. Schuler May 1959

A Critical And Comparative Analysis Of John Calvin's And The Early Friends' Doctrine Of The Word Of God, Peter R. Schuler

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The question has been raised since the inception of the Friends or Quaker movement, "What position do the Friends hold in reference to a basis of authority for their proposed and propounded doctrines?" This basis of authority was first questioned by various religious leaders of the day when George Fox went about preaching against the cold, dead, formalism of the churches in England, and remains a matter of some debate today.

Since the beginning of the Friends movement, it has held the Bible in great reverence and has used it as a basis of their teaching. Other groups, too, considered …

An Analytical Examination Of Contemporary Missionary Motives Objectives And Methods, Donald L. Jeter May 1959

An Analytical Examination Of Contemporary Missionary Motives Objectives And Methods, Donald L. Jeter

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Christianity has been a missionary religion from New Testament times. It has claimed to be a religion unique from all other religions of the world because it has God's only revelation of the answer to the spiritual needs of mankind, and because of this claim to uniqueness it has been a proselyting religion. In recent years there have been some from within the ranks of Christianity who have not been too sure whether the missionary imperative is valid today,. They feel that missions should be curtailed if not discarded because of the lack of a motive that is unique. Not …
