An Analysis Of Communion Hymns In The Lutheran Hymnal And Of Certain Communion Hymns Available From Outside Sources, Herbert Andrew Schulze Jul 1960

An Analysis Of Communion Hymns In The Lutheran Hymnal And Of Certain Communion Hymns Available From Outside Sources, Herbert Andrew Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this project is to analyze the Communion hymns of the present Lutheran Hymnal in terms of their eucharistic value and to investigate other Communion hymns of the Christian Church as to their usability in our future hymnal, especially their accent on the euchariatic nature of the Sacrament.

It is the writer's opinion that hymns 304 to 316 (''The Lord's Supper" section of TLH) are inadequate both in number and in quality for expressing our reawakened appreciation of the Lord's Supper as an opportunity joyously to receive the grace of God in Christ for the preservation and strengthening …

The Contemporary American Short Story (A Study Of The Best American Short Stories, 1950-1959), Gertrude Carrick Curtler Jul 1960

The Contemporary American Short Story (A Study Of The Best American Short Stories, 1950-1959), Gertrude Carrick Curtler

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and review the contemporary short story by means of an intensive study of The Best American Short Stories of the past ten years. The obvious weakness of the project is that all these two hundred and forty-five short stories were selected as the best of each year by one person, Martha Foley. While she is generally respected as a critic, still her opinions are based on her own taste and judgement alone. It is possible that she leans too much toward avant-garde stories, or even that she may prefer stories of one …

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey Jul 1960

The Influence Of Rivers On The History Of Indiana, Ralph L. Bailey

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study deals with the influence of rivers on the history of Indiana. It is difficult for us to visualize that some of the small streams that we cross many times with hardly a glance, were once the most important link in a vast chain of commerce. The early settler depended on these streams to get his surplus products to market. A glance at a road map of Indiana will reveal the importance that the early settler assigned to rivers and streams. Can you find any city or town of any size that is not located near a stream of …

A Study Of The Dramatic Criticism Of Charles Lamb, Lyman Francis Smart Jun 1960

A Study Of The Dramatic Criticism Of Charles Lamb, Lyman Francis Smart

English Language and Literature ETDs

In the one hundred fifty years since Charles Lamb published what might be termed his first formal criticism, opinions of his stature as a critic have waxed and waned. His critical writing has been attached as the "blasphemies of a poor manic," and praised as possibly the greatest applied criticism in English. Recent critical estimates of British criticism have tended to ignore Lamb or to damn him with faint praise.

The purpose of this study is to re-examine the earlier attitudes toward Lamb and his writing on the drama, and to look with fresh perspective at the most noteworthy of …

A Comparison Of Fourth Century Trinitarian Terminology With The Terminology Of Karl Barth, Paul C. Dorn Jun 1960

A Comparison Of Fourth Century Trinitarian Terminology With The Terminology Of Karl Barth, Paul C. Dorn

Bachelor of Divinity

In general, the problem under investigation is in what way and to what extent Karl Barth agrees in his doctrine of the Trinity with the traditional orthodox trinitarian theology formulated by representative theologians during the first four centuries of the Christian Church as well as those condemned doctrines formulated by their opposing heretics. Barth has often been accused of Modalism by some and conversely defended against this view by others. We have felt the importance of settling in some way this nebulous debate by addressing this investigation more specifically in the direction of Modalism, and it is mainly within this …

The Angel Of Yahweh In The Old Testament, Arthur F. Graudin Jun 1960

The Angel Of Yahweh In The Old Testament, Arthur F. Graudin

Bachelor of Divinity

Biblical scholars hold various views as to the meaning and the scope of the term, "the angel of Yahweh," in the Old Testament. In recent years, however, this subject does not seem to have attracted much attention and, as far as the writer knows, no recent study of the subject has been made in our own circles. This paper attempts to present a study of the views of Biblical interpreters concerning, “the angel of Yahweh," and related terms in the Old Testament and to reach some conclusions on the basis of what Scripture itself reveal.

The Messiah Of The Old Testament Jew, Eugene Kauffeld Jun 1960

The Messiah Of The Old Testament Jew, Eugene Kauffeld

Bachelor of Divinity

The question remains, if Simeon had such a faith, and the Greek or the New Testament indicates he did, where did he get such a clear picture of Christ, and God's plan of salvation? The main source of his faith was found in the Old Testament, sacred writings considered by the faithful Jews of his time to be the Scriptures wherein God had revealed His salvation to men. He had searched and found, he had thirsted for the water of life; and he had found the eternal fountain of God's mercy and grace to a sinful and fallen mankind.

Demonology In The Old Testament, Harold W. Rast Jun 1960

Demonology In The Old Testament, Harold W. Rast

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is not to argue the problem of whether demons actually existed in Old Testament times or whether they were merely mythological attempts to express the reality of evil in the universe apart from the human sphere. The purpose is to present a rapid survey of Old Testament demonology and the influence that critical and conservative scholarship have brought to bear upon demonological interpretation.

A Pastoral Approach To Interfaith Marriage In The Light Of Significant Sociological Data And Christian Principles, Ronald L. Johnstone Jun 1960

A Pastoral Approach To Interfaith Marriage In The Light Of Significant Sociological Data And Christian Principles, Ronald L. Johnstone

Bachelor of Divinity

It has been recognition of these social factors at work upon the church, as well as recognition of the increasing frequency with which interfaith marriages are occurring, that prompted the writer of this thesis to delve into this specific subject. This is a problem being brought before Christian pastors with increasing frequency today.

The Doctrine Of Christian Cross-Bearing In The New Testament, Carl Lutz Jun 1960

The Doctrine Of Christian Cross-Bearing In The New Testament, Carl Lutz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

He suffers, he witnesses suffering all around him, and yet he is at a loss to define it. In church he hears a definition, but in daily life the Christian's “cross” does not seem to be any different from the afflictions experienced by the godless. The purpose of this study shall be to attempt to clarify the situation and as far as possible to define the limits and contents of the Christian's "cross."

A Historical Critical Analysis Of Rudolf Bultmann's Form Criticism As Related To His Demythologization, Lorman Petersen Jun 1960

A Historical Critical Analysis Of Rudolf Bultmann's Form Criticism As Related To His Demythologization, Lorman Petersen

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The primary purpose of this thesis is to delineate Bultmann's method or hermeneutics in treating the New Testament, in particular his principles of Form Criticism and Demythologization. Bultmann is a many-sided man. He has been concerned with almost every topic and emphasis which theology has to offer today. He is an exegete, theologian, historian, linguist, philosopher, preacher, lecturer, and professor. As one man has said, "He knows everything and seems to have written on most everything." A. list of his works, appended to this thesis, will support this statement. Moreover , he has never stood still, and even now some …

Testimony And Evidence In The Fourth Gospel, Julius Farup Jun 1960

Testimony And Evidence In The Fourth Gospel, Julius Farup

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The problem 'briefly stated, of which a solution will be attempted, is this: To what extent can the Fourth Gospel be relied upon as authentic and trustworthy evidence concerning the person and activity of Jesus of Nazareth? Are the accounts of His activity and teaching based on eyewitness testimony, and supported evidence showing first-hand knowledge of the facts, or are they less reliable speculations and mythical or figurative representations of ideas in the mind of the writer? Does the Fourth Gospel record the personal observations of an apostle and. other eyewitnesses, and their direct testimony concerning Jesus, human and divine, …

Scripture And Tradition In Clement Of Alexandria, Robert Louis Wilken Jun 1960

Scripture And Tradition In Clement Of Alexandria, Robert Louis Wilken

Bachelor of Divinity

In the latter half of .the second century Tertullian could write in his Prescription, "Quid Athenae Hierosolymis"? Not many miles eastward there lived a .contemporary in ' . Alexandria who thought Athens had much to do with Jerusalem. Clement of Alexandria had begun a tradition in. the Catholic Church which was destined to influence its theological thinking until the present day. He began the never-ending task of attempting systematically to relate the Gospel of' Jesus Christ to the culture of the world in which Christians live. Although he has not gained immortality through his own systematic efforts, the fruits of …

The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai Jun 1960

The Reformation Movement In Estonia, Heino Olavi Kadai

Bachelor of Divinity

It is hoped that the thesis at hand is not welcomed only because it adds to the completeness of Reformation research in the English language. The study of the Reformation movement in Estonia will help to demonstrate the fact that the Great Reformation, as Lutherans like to think of the Lutheran Reformation, spread in many different ways and moved by diverse roads, not always following the same pattern in every territory. As the study will bear out, the Reformation movement in Estonia carried many characteristics of its own that differ greatly from the development of the Reformation in Germany, Sweden, …

The Message Of Koheleth And Khayyam, Herman Martin Jank Jun 1960

The Message Of Koheleth And Khayyam, Herman Martin Jank

Bachelor of Divinity

The concurrent message of Ecclesiastes, or “The Preacher,” or Koheleth and the Rubaiyat of OmarKhayyam is an elusive one. Available information concerning the background of the authors and their works is meger. Interpretations and evaluations of their conclusions have reached a wide divergence in most respects.

The Satanic In St. Paul's Letters With Special Reference To False Teachers, Adrian Max Leske Jun 1960

The Satanic In St. Paul's Letters With Special Reference To False Teachers, Adrian Max Leske

Bachelor of Divinity

A vital and practical demonology is certainly necessary to sharpen our awareness of evil and the distinction between right and wrong. Our understanding of the satanic not only puts us on guard but also brings into sharp emphasis the real greatness or God's grace and deepens our trust in our Saviour. For this reason I have undertaken to investigate what St. Paul says about Satan and his followers in order to find a vital and practical demonology for our day. The reason St. Paul is chosen rather than the other New Testament writers is that he more than the other …

Bachelor of Divinity

An Examination and Evaluation of the Theology of Karl Barth and Oscar Gullman on the Doctrine of Baptism, with Particular Emphasis on the Question of Infant Baptism It is the purpose of this paper to present the respective views of these two leading theologians on the subject or baptism, in particular infant baptism, as expressed in their two publications on the subject, and to submit them to analysis and criticism. During the course of the paper it will be necessary to refer to the various statements of the New Testament regarding baptism and to compare those passages with certain conclusions …

An Analysis Of Christian Maturity, Walter William Harms Jun 1960

An Analysis Of Christian Maturity, Walter William Harms

Bachelor of Divinity

Christian maturity is often spoken of in preaching and other discussions. The problem of this thesis is to distinguish exactly what the nature of Christian maturity is in contrast to psychology's view. This is to result in the display of the distinctive character of Christian maturity.

The main burden of this thesis is to sharpen the lines of Christian maturity in contrast to psychology. It is not intended to be a definitive explanation of how the mature Christian reacts in a given situation but to determine the guiding principals in a mature Christian's life.

God's Debt To Man, Herbert Hohenstein Jun 1960

God's Debt To Man, Herbert Hohenstein

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A sincere and faithful child of God is struck down by some sudden misfortune or disaster. Both the suffering saint and the world about him are often quick to ask: "God, how could You?” The obvious implication of this question is, of course: “Lord, You have slipped up in Your arithmetic. You certainly did not owe that loyal child of Yours such a crushing blow. He has been serving You faithfully and well. And now this is the way You reward him?" Such reasoning reflects the inbred conviction that God is obligated to bless us if we obey Him and …

Influences That Contributed To The Theology Of Samuel S Schmucker, Karl Koch Jun 1960

Influences That Contributed To The Theology Of Samuel S Schmucker, Karl Koch

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Samuel Simon Schmucker was a leading figure of the Lutheran Church in America during the first half of the nineteenth century. He was born February 28, 1799, and died on July 26, 1873. His main labor was as a professor at Gettysburg seminary, where he served from 1826 until his retirement in 1864. By his labors and leadership in the General Synod he advanced many doctrinal formulations that had been considered foreign to Lutheranism and which were severely attacked during his later years. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the possible causes and influences that led to …

H. Emil Brunner - 1914-1928, The Critical Period Of His Theological Developments And Writings, Heino Kadai Jun 1960

H. Emil Brunner - 1914-1928, The Critical Period Of His Theological Developments And Writings, Heino Kadai

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The study at hand is historical in nature. No attempt has been made to evaluate Brunner’s thinking from a theological and confessional point of view. Its scope is limited to 1914 and 1928. An introduction to what is here called the Critical Period is necessary, but Brunner’s theological development and works published after 1928 fall outside of the limits of the study.

Hermeneutica Sacra- Principles Of Old Testament Interpretation In Seventeenth-Century Lutheran Orthodoxy, Kenneth Miller Jun 1960

Hermeneutica Sacra- Principles Of Old Testament Interpretation In Seventeenth-Century Lutheran Orthodoxy, Kenneth Miller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It therefore became apparent that it would be worthwhile to investigate the hermeneutical principles of the seventeenth-century Lutherans, and to discover what principles they employed in their commentaries and dogmatics. The aim of this investigation, then, is to discover these principles and to evaluate their validity. The questions that naturally arises are such as these: Are the methods of the Old Lutherans consistent? Are they still valid today? Is the Bible used as little more than a source of proof-texts? Did the dogmaticians of that period go too far in seeing Christian doctrines in the Old Testament? Did they make …

Philip Melanchthon's Doctrine Of The Holy Eucharist, Randell Tonn Jun 1960

Philip Melanchthon's Doctrine Of The Holy Eucharist, Randell Tonn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This dissertation is an attempt to determine, primarily on the basis of his own major writings, opinions and letters, the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist as taught, believed and confessed by Philip Melanchthon. The question we seek to answer is: “What was Philip Melanchthon’s doctrine of the Holy Eucharist?" This question is deliberately phrased to exclude the question, "What do other commentators say that he taught and believed?" On the basis of his own words, we seek to determine what is Melanchthon saying about the Eucharist; not what might he be interpreted as saying; what would we prefer him to …

The Altenburg Debate, William Schmelder Jun 1960

The Altenburg Debate, William Schmelder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an attempt to understand what the issues were which culminated in the Altenburg Debate of 1841. Why did it take two years to find a solution to the problems of the colonists? Were any other solutions attempted? If there were, why were they unacceptable? Against whom did Walther debate at Altenburg? What position did the opposition2advocate? What was the source of Walther's theses? These and many other questions enter the mind of the student of the early history of the Missouri Synod when he begins to evaluate the Altenburg Debate.

The purpose of this study is to …

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager Jun 1960

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because of the central place which the Confessions give to the doctrine of justification we feel that we can do nothing less than make this doctrine the unifying principle in this thesis. We do so for this reason that the unifying principle or a Lutheran philosophy of education cannot be much diverse from the material principle of its theology. If theology is the basis or the foundation upon which the superstructure of a Lutheran philosophy of education can be built up, then the two and their unifying principles are more closely related than we might assume.
