James Mellor: English Convert And Handcart Pioneer - A Biography, Edna J. Gregerson May 1961

James Mellor: English Convert And Handcart Pioneer - A Biography, Edna J. Gregerson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For many years the descendants of John and James Mellor -- a large family who have made contributions to the cultural and educational activities of their various communities -- have been desirous of preserving for their posterity, and others, a record of the Mellors. Several years ago Amy Mellor Howe initiated the project by compiling and editing the first Mellor History. The foreword in her book wherein she "...hoped that the information and data herein contained may form the nucleus for further research..." served as the incentive to continue the project.

It is planned to incorporate the following biography into …

A Descriptive Summary Of Various Band Booster Groups In Southeastern Idaho And A Study Of Their Benefits To The Schools, Melborne Roberts May 1961

A Descriptive Summary Of Various Band Booster Groups In Southeastern Idaho And A Study Of Their Benefits To The Schools, Melborne Roberts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Within the last 30 years the music departments in the schools of the Southeastern Idaho areas have grown tremendously. With the mushrooming of the band programs within these music departments many problems appear. They arise primarily from inadequate funds.

In order for the band systems in this area to function properly, the problem of finances must be met by some means other than entirely through the funds allocated by local school boards.

Local boards of education frequently do not have sufficient funds to meet such needs as transportation for band tours and trips to the district and state festivals. Large …

An Analysis Of The Paradoxes In Jean-Paul Sartre's Existentialism, David Ronald Burke

Philosophy ETDs

The purpose of this study is: (1) to examine Sartre’s intellectual background in search of those elements which have led to the development of paradoxical concepts; (2) to collect and examine current criticisms of Sartre’s philosophical position; and (3) to show why the interpretation of his philosophy as an embodiment of paradox necessitates a re-evaluation of critical attacks.

The American Revolutionary Soldier, 1775-1781, Robert Edward Hanie Apr 1961

The American Revolutionary Soldier, 1775-1781, Robert Edward Hanie

Master's Theses

The object of this paper is to present a survey of soldier life in the American Revolutionary Army. Although the study might be labeled "social history", the researcher believes that history is the product of all the kaleidoscopic events of the past, and that no phenomena exerts an influence of undue proportions. History is alive. History provides the continuing link between the vast "eons" of the past and the remarkable shortness of the "present."

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin Apr 1961

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin

Master's Theses

Since Flaubert has been called "le chef de l'ecole realiste", an attempt will be made in this thesis to show how he used realism in the treatment of heroines in his novels. The first chapter will be dedicated to realism itself, showing first how the movement began in France in the mid-nineteenth century before Flaubert and Balzac were considered realists, followed by a modern definition and characteristics, such as: truth, materialism, scientific approach, documentary method, tediousness, mediocrity, sympathy with ordinary life and sociological features.

The other four chapters will be dedicated to Flaubert' s main heroines. Each chapter will have …

Church And State During The Second Spanish Republic, 1931-1936, José M. Sánchez Mar 1961

Church And State During The Second Spanish Republic, 1931-1936, José M. Sánchez

History ETDs

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries groups of reformers demanded a decrease in the Church's powers as a prelude to national political, social and economic reform. But, even they were cautious enough not to demand a complete separation of Church and State. Thus, despite economic attacks upon the Church's landed wealth, and despite a semi-official policy of anticlericalism, the church-state union survived intact until 1931.

The reformers of 1931 deemed it their task to legislate complete separation of the two jurisdictions. Because they wanted the Church forever excluded from the political, social, and intellectual life of the nation, they …

A Method Of Structural Analysis Of The Novel, Clinton F. Hurley Jr. Mar 1961

A Method Of Structural Analysis Of The Novel, Clinton F. Hurley Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study is intended to be a contribution to the aesthetics of the novel. It is motivated by the assumption that the main purpose of criticism of the novel is to help the reader perceive, understand, and evaluate novels and that the main purpose of aesthetics of the novel is to help the critic understand the principles behind perceiving, understanding, and evaluating novels. According to this assumption, the major function of aesthetics, then, is to supply the critic with a consistent theory of art and with a practical method of criticism. In one sense, criticism is applied aesthetics, and aesthetics …

Symbolic Texture In A Selection Of The Short Fictions Of D.H. Lawrence, Robert L. Stallman Mar 1961

Symbolic Texture In A Selection Of The Short Fictions Of D.H. Lawrence, Robert L. Stallman

English Language and Literature ETDs

Symbolic texture, a combination of two terms outlined above, uses images generally thought of as textural to form groups of symbols that support the main theme of a story and provide for its underlying unit. This element or quality is in the work; it is not the feeling or "radiance" arising from the reader's reception of the work.

The stories I have chosen to illustrate symbolic texture and to trace its variations in Lawrence's work are: Odour of Chrysanthemums, Daughters of the Vicar, The Horse Dealer's Daughter, The Fox, The Virgin and the Gypsy. These …

Of the people who have contributed to its development, many were Americans, while others were immigrants striving for freedom in their newly established nation. Millions of Americans have visited Washington, D. C. since 1800, leaving their beloved city with diversified ideals for its future. Dr. H. Paul Caemmerer has several quotations from famous American personalities regarding the national capital.

The Function Of The Director Of Christian Education In Relation To Management Of Personnel, Harold W. Edmonds

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

During the past few years, the writer has become interested in the field of Christian Education. It has been observed that far too often, there are pastors and church leaders frustrated because of an inability to present the message of the Gospel effectively. It has been the conviction of this writer as he has worked with personnel as a floor manager in a department store, and later as a pastor in a small church, that any measure of human success comes as a result of working through individuals. With this in mind, the writer has endeavored to determine to what …

A Study Of The Attitudes Toward And Understandings Of Temple Marriage Of A Selected Group Of Seminary Students In The Alpine School District (Utah), Jerald Ray Johansen

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of most religious teachings and concepts is to change the student's attitude that desirable behavior may follow. The measurement of attitudes and the way people feel about certain religious concepts are, to an extent, determinative of their behavior. This realization has brought about a steady growth within the educational field of attitude and opinion measurement. It has also influenced religious educators to investigate this field in their efforts to get people to attain desirable religious goals.

The problem, investigated in the present research, was concerned with whether the youth of seminary age in the Church of Jesus Christ …

English Radicalism And Political Reform In The Nineteenth Century: A Study In Applied Philosophy, Grace Rogers Mauzy Jan 1961

English Radicalism And Political Reform In The Nineteenth Century: A Study In Applied Philosophy, Grace Rogers Mauzy

Masters Theses

Introduction

The face of England changed dramatically during the 19th century. Railway tracks seemed her agrarian greenness, mines pocked her highlands and the smoke-belching blemishes of Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham bulged into ugly prominence in her misdirection, casting a sooty pall that boded no good for her aristocratic tradition.

Coordination Of 2, 8- Bishydroxymethyl - 2, Elements Of The First Transition Series, Charles Edward O'Rear

Master's Theses

The preparation and study of 2, 8-bishydroxymethyl-2, 8-dimethyl-3, 7-diaza-1,5,9-nonanetriol with ions of the first transition series have been investigated. Spectrophotometric studies of solutions of this compound with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions gave evidence of the formation of complexes containing one mole of ligand per metal ion throughout a wide pH range. The Cu(II) complex, the yellow colored Fe(III) complex formed at high pH, and the light blue colored Ni(II) complex have remained stable over several months. The red colored Ni(II) complex changes slowly into a more stable greenish-yellow complex. The ligand formed weaker complexes with Co(II) and Mn(II). Data from …

The Dramas Of Byron : An Evaluation, Welford Dunaway Taylor Jan 1961

The Dramas Of Byron : An Evaluation, Welford Dunaway Taylor

Master's Theses

After considering Byron's relation to the theatre as an amateur actor and committeeman, viewing his dramatic concepts, and comparing him to other poets of his own day who attempted dramas, it can be clearly seen that both from an acting and a literary standpoint, his dramas are of an inferior quality. There can be no doubt of Byron's disappointment and disillusionment, as he had devoted so much time and energy at the prime of his life to them. At first he had said that this work was not for the stage, wishing all the time that he might capture the …

The Early Church Reflected In The Gospel According To Matthew, Jack L. Barnes Jan 1961

The Early Church Reflected In The Gospel According To Matthew, Jack L. Barnes

Graduate Thesis Collection

There seems to be, among other things, a vivid reflection of church life in the Gospel According to Matthew. It is my purpose to point out the outstanding characteristics of the Gospel of Matthew and in so doing present what appears to me to be a definite portrait of an early church. As the environment seems to become clear in what we read, the church takes form and we can see many interesting aspects of it.
