St. Paul's Attitude Toward False Teaching According To The Pastoral Epistles, Ronald Halamka Jun 1961

St. Paul's Attitude Toward False Teaching According To The Pastoral Epistles, Ronald Halamka

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis presumes that we can depend on the Pastoral epistles to furnish us with an excellent representation of St. Paul's approach in dealing with false teachings. Their contents are saturated with front-line conflicts with false teachers, and their author, according to the conviction of this writer as well as of many current theologians, is St. Paul.

John 1:9 In The Light Of Historical Interpretation, John Francis Niermann

The Problem Of Christian And Church Fellowship, Ronald Frederick Blaess Jun 1961

The Problem Of Christian And Church Fellowship, Ronald Frederick Blaess

Bachelor of Divinity

The history of the Christian Church from the first to the twentieth century could be written in terms of its struggle to maintain, to demonstrate, or to realise this fundamental unity between the Lord Jesus Christ and His body, the Christian Church, besought of God the Father by Him in His great high-priestly prayer, and declared above by St. Paul. But is this oneness an earthly or a spiritual oneness? Is it a oneness to be manifest in this life and world or only hereafter? Is it a oneness which can exist despite or inspite of divisions, frictions, and refusal …

The Role Of The Christian Pastor Today, William K. Hannusch Jun 1961

The Role Of The Christian Pastor Today, William K. Hannusch

Bachelor of Divinity

The burden of everyday living has been made more pleasant and easier. So also, scientific research is having its effect on the role of the Christian pastor. It is giving him tools with which to work and to obtain better results. This is true not only in making use of machines and methods for the office, but especially in working with, and handling the human personality.

Of God And Of Gods A Critique Of Diety Teachings In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Paulus Ernest Voelzke

Bachelor of Divinity

Louis Kossuth In America, 1851-1852, John Bartholomew St. Leger Jun 1961

Louis Kossuth In America, 1851-1852, John Bartholomew St. Leger

Master's Theses

Of the many visitors who came to America before the Civil War, perhaps the strangest guest was Louis Kossuth, the ex-governor and revolutionist who unsuccessfully rebelled against the Hapsburg monarchy. Such visitors as Lafayette, de Tocqueville, Martineau, Dickens and others came primarily to .America to learn more about our society and political institutions. This was not true in the visit of Louis Kossuth. For the first time since our independence was established, an active, central European militarist was upon our shores.

Adapatation Of The Religious Dance And Similar Physical Movements In The Indigenous Church, Manfred Berndt Jun 1961

Adapatation Of The Religious Dance And Similar Physical Movements In The Indigenous Church, Manfred Berndt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This is just one example of a cultural problem that raises a painful question for the Western Christian: “Why is it that, while the Church, particularly in her worship, has done so much to use God's gifts of music, art, and. drama, it has almost completely ignored or condemned the one art that combines these three--the dance?" Can the dance be a vehicle to glorify God, not merely in recreation, but also in worship? It is to this problem that this study addresses itself. It intends to examine the reverent and irreverent use of the dance in the history of …

The Theological Basis For Adult Bible Study And Its Practical Aspects In The Adult Educational Program Of The Church, Marvin Mueller Jun 1961

The Theological Basis For Adult Bible Study And Its Practical Aspects In The Adult Educational Program Of The Church, Marvin Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is concerned specifically with the theological basis of adult bible study within the program of the church. This concern is valid in as much as the word of God is basic for any program of adult Christian education in the church. The Bible as the word of God is the source and norm for the faith and life of all Christians who through Holy Baptism and the work of the Holy Spirit have been placed under this word of God. It is the purpose of this thesis to show in what way man is brought under the Word …

The Conception Of The Proper Work Of A Missionary In The Correspondence Of Boniface, Albert Crawford Jun 1961

The Conception Of The Proper Work Of A Missionary In The Correspondence Of Boniface, Albert Crawford

Masters Theses

First Paragraph:

The seventh through the tenth centuries witnessed a great expansion of the Roman Catholic Church to the north into lands that were partially or completely pagan. As one of the great missionary periods of the Church it demands the attention of the Church historian. As an important step in the civilization of Europe it demands the attention of the secular historian, as an expression of the contemporary doctrine of the nature of the Church and what is essential for the expansion of that Church into other cultures, it demands the attention of the theologian. The importance of this …

The Basis For Distinguising Moral Law From Ceremonial And Political Law In The Old Testament, George Loose Jun 1961

The Basis For Distinguising Moral Law From Ceremonial And Political Law In The Old Testament, George Loose

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to attempt to find an answer to the question, and in doing so, to examine the bases which have been used in the Lutheran Church. Some attention will be given to the attitude toward the laws in Old Testament times, but this is just for the sake of background. It would provide material for another study. Some attention will be given also to the position of other Christian churches, but again only to clarify the position of the Lutheran Church.

An Investigation Of Decision Procedures For The Propositional Calculus, J Dalton Tarwater May 1961

An Investigation Of Decision Procedures For The Propositional Calculus, J Dalton Tarwater

Philosophy ETDs

This thesis has as its central purpose the positing of a novel procedure for finding the totality of valid conclusions to a given set of statements in the Propositional Calculus. it is divided into five main parts. Part I is largely a criticism of existing decision procedures for the Propositional Calculus. Part II posits a formal structure which is given an interpretation in Part III. It is the interpretation of that structure which provides the new procedure for analyzing arguments. Part IV is a detailed criticism of a particular method which is supposed to supply all of the valid conclusions …

Jack London's Heroes: A Study Of Evolutionary Thought, Roy W. Carlson May 1961

Jack London's Heroes: A Study Of Evolutionary Thought, Roy W. Carlson

American Studies ETDs

The important thing, in terms of this study, is that evolutionary speculation had a popular audience and a relatively large audience. Not only did people who had never seen copies of The Origin of Species or The Descent of Man feel perfectly familiar with their contents and qualified to talk about them, but serious thinkers were reading scientific and pseudo-scientific books at an unprecedented rate. For instance, Spencer's books had a sale of 368,755 copies in the authorized editions in the United States between 1860 and 1903. The testimony of John R. Commons as to Spencer's popularity is well known. …

Conrad Aiken's Preludes For Memnon: A Thematic Analysis, Henry B. Chapin May 1961

Conrad Aiken's Preludes For Memnon: A Thematic Analysis, Henry B. Chapin

English Language and Literature ETDs

My hope is that this essay will be one small contribution in making Conrad Aiken as important and formidable in the eyes of the world as he is in fact. It is difficult to read much of Aiken without feeling, I think, that he has somehow been unjustly neglected in the contemporary assessment of modern poets. Thus it is my further hope that my discernment has anticipated my judgment, and that Conrad Aiken's Preludes for Memnon is treated in the following pages in such a way that his recognition as one of the great American poets will be appreciably facilitated.

British Public Opinion On The Anglo--German Naval Rivalry, 1900-1909, Barbara Mckay Willis Shaver May 1961

British Public Opinion On The Anglo--German Naval Rivalry, 1900-1909, Barbara Mckay Willis Shaver

History ETDs

This thesis investigates the opinions expressed in British circles of the development of the German navy during the years 1900-1909. It attempts to determine to what degree Great Britain considered the German navy a threat to her own sea supremacy and what specific action was brought about as a result of the German Navy Act of 1900.

The Horatian Imitations Of Pope And Swift, Robert Garland May 1961

The Horatian Imitations Of Pope And Swift, Robert Garland

English Language and Literature ETDs

The English writer of the Sixteenth Century--particularly the translator--worked with a new sense of national vitality and purpose, but he was dependent on, and to a certain degree, subservient to, the sense of form and literary history seen in the ancient world, in modern Italy, and occasionally in France. But by the beginning of the Eighteenth Century, England had become so apt a pupil that it felt itself more the inheritor than the learner.

Primitivism In The Faerie Queene, Andrew R. Segura F.S.C. May 1961

Primitivism In The Faerie Queene, Andrew R. Segura F.S.C.

English Language and Literature ETDs

Renaissance primitivism may be described as a literary interest in and an occasional preference for 1) past times as possessing sturdier virtues and better general conditions for the good life; an interest manifest especially in the admiration of a classical golden age, in a sense of loss of the innocence of Eden, and in the memories of the glory of the national past (contrasted with the baseness of certain aspects of the present); 2) a more contented, less sophisticated life providing leisure and opportunity for study and contemplation in such forms as the life of the shepherd or even that …

Intention And Actuality In The Fiction Of William Dean Howells, William J. Mcmurray May 1961

Intention And Actuality In The Fiction Of William Dean Howells, William J. Mcmurray

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study of Howells' fiction is a discussion of representative novels of the author's from A Foregone Conclusion in 1875 through his last novel, The Vacation of the Kelwyns, in 1920. The arrangement of the novels in chronological order is primarily for convenience; no attempt has been made to trace the literary development of the author. My purpose, rather, has been to show that Howells, throughout the greater part of his career as a novelist, was consistent in his literary method. To understand that method is to have a better understanding of meaning in the novels. Finally, in demonstrating that …

Federal Military Agencies, 1861-1865, Irwin L. Nolan May 1961

Federal Military Agencies, 1861-1865, Irwin L. Nolan

History ETDs

The Civil War in the United States was a gigantic moral and physical effort that has elicited the feelings of hundreds of its participants and thousands of its students. Yet, in all of the treatment of the conflict, a dearth of information is available on the informational agencies that contributed to the Union military victory. No historian to date has chosen to publish a definitive study of these agencies and it is the hope here that some light can be shed on four types of organizations that were, for the most part, developed as a result of the war. This …

The Origins And Importance Of The Initiation Story In Twentieth Century British And American Fiction, Robert S. Bickham May 1961

The Origins And Importance Of The Initiation Story In Twentieth Century British And American Fiction, Robert S. Bickham

English Language and Literature ETDs

The third and final advantage of the method of explication is that it will, I hope, increase the respect of the readers of serious fiction for the short story as a significant art form. For well over a decade now poems and novels have been subjected to the severest critical scrutiny, while the short story has received but little. In fact one of the reasons this study was undertaken was because of the appalling paucity of criticism of the short story. Just as explication has highlighted the artistic excellence of many poems and novels, so it may help to modify …

John Gerson And The Conciliar Movement, Arthur E. Wright Jr. May 1961

John Gerson And The Conciliar Movement, Arthur E. Wright Jr.

History ETDs

The salient event in church history in the two hundred years previous to the Protestant Revolution was the decline of the Catholic Church. During the High Middle Ages the Church and its visible head had enjoyed tremendous prestige. In many ways the Church had dominated and controlled the lives of men. This was not to be the case during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries when the Catholic Church and the Papacy were to lose their dominant position and other forces and influences became supreme. If, in many ways, this was an internal decline, visible signs of it were not lacking.

An Approach To The Presentation Of Art History On The Junior High School Level, Vivian N. Grelick May 1961

An Approach To The Presentation Of Art History On The Junior High School Level, Vivian N. Grelick

Art & Art History ETDs

This project is more of a beginning than a summation. The material represents the framework and initial trial chapters of an art history survey book. The writer's intent is not to produce another work, to add to the many already available, for use on the college level. The book, when completed, is rather intended for fruitful use as a junior high school text.

The Navajos And Federal Policy, 1913-1935, Lawrence C. Kelly May 1961

The Navajos And Federal Policy, 1913-1935, Lawrence C. Kelly

History ETDs

Most studies of the American Indian are confined to the more romantic eras of his history: the nineteenth century and before. But few studies, relatively, are concerned with the recent, twentieth century aspects of Indian history. While the reason for this is obvious, as the Indian vanishes, so does interest in him fade, it is nevertheless true that some tribes are growing and their vitality in the twentieth century is a subject worthy of consideration.

A Proposed Program Of Junior Church Camping With An Evangelistic Emphasis, Alfred Bohr May 1961

A Proposed Program Of Junior Church Camping With An Evangelistic Emphasis, Alfred Bohr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

As camping continues to grow as a vital part of the Christian Education program in the church, camp leaders are constantly seeking new and better tools to perform a more effective job. The church has been quite active in developing the program of camping for young people but has seemingly ignored the children. It wasn't until the 1930's that any rapid advances were made in junior camping. Consequently, any development in the camping movement for juniors has been carried on by secular agencies. These programs are very excellent, but they do not fully meet the need of the church camp, …

The Kingship Of Yahweh As A Motif For The Universal Savior In The Old Testament, Pyeng Seh Oh May 1961

The Kingship Of Yahweh As A Motif For The Universal Savior In The Old Testament, Pyeng Seh Oh

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The aim of this dissertation is, however, to establish the peculiar function of the Kingship of Yahweh as found in His Universal Saviorship.

In order to understand the Kingship of Yahweh, we shall first examine kingship in the Near East, particularly in Egypt and Mesopotamia. This study is made possible by the discovery, deciphering, and publication of Near Eastern texts. As the reader will notice, the cited data in the Second Chapter are mainly from Ancient~ Eastern Texts Relating to Old Testament, edited by James B. Pritchard.

The Concept Of Perfection As Held By Early Friends, Paul J. Pickett May 1961

The Concept Of Perfection As Held By Early Friends, Paul J. Pickett

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

It was the purpose of this investigation to determine, if possible, the early Friends' concept of perfection.

Within the ranks of Evangelical Friends today there is some confusion and diversity of opinion regarding the early Friends' view of perfection. The problem which exists is due to several factors; 1) Very little has been written, of a contemporary nature, which deals with the question. 2) Most of that which has been written was published during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, therefore making the works hard to obtain and difficult to read and interpret. 3) The association of Quakers with the Wesleyan …
