Perceptions Of The Feminine Role And Some Related Problems In Counseling Girls, Lanorjane G. Pauline Aug 1962

Perceptions Of The Feminine Role And Some Related Problems In Counseling Girls, Lanorjane G. Pauline

Graduate Student Research Papers

Our culture presents many barriers that prevent women from using their intellect for the greatest good. As counselors, we need to begin freeing ourselves from the limits of narrow and inappropriately differentiated masculine and feminine roles. An awareness of the reasons for and the extent of these prejudices will help to understand ourselves and thus the people with whom we work. Through understanding the pressures of our society on the jobs we do, we can gain knowledge enabling us to use more of our intellectual resources and thus to plan better for today while looking to the future.

The Development Of The Italian Madrigal, Jack D. Waddington Aug 1962

The Development Of The Italian Madrigal, Jack D. Waddington

Graduate Student Research Papers

In recent years the madrigal has gained considerable popularity. While this is good, unfortunately, the intricacies of this type of music demand a thorough understanding. To properly interpret and perform this music, a knowledge of the stylistic characteristics of the period in which the work was written is of the utmost importance. In view of these factors, this study would seem to have value.

(An Analysis Of) Jewelry Making And Language, Lee Whitley Aug 1962

(An Analysis Of) Jewelry Making And Language, Lee Whitley

Graduate Student Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was to clarify the significance of jewelry by showing it to be like a language, both in past history and today. Jewelry is divided into two general divisions, that mass produced industrially at a relatively low cost and that individually-produced by craftsmen at considerable expense. It was not the intention of this paper to separate the two, merely to explore the language of jewelry through the medium of symbols.A

In the past there had never been formulated a written organizational guide for administering the The Southeastern Alaska Music Educators Association music festival. It was the purpose of this study to describe and evaluate the techniques used to administer the 1961 Southeastern Alaska Music Contest-festival. An organizational guide might logically evolve from this, or better, from several such descriptions.

An Investigation Of Promotional Practices Used To Raise Money For Music Programs In Public Schools, John Marvin Clark Aug 1962

An Investigation Of Promotional Practices Used To Raise Money For Music Programs In Public Schools, John Marvin Clark

Graduate Student Research Papers

Many music teachers work in school systems that do not give the music departments enough financial support to implement effective programs. These teachers must seek more financial support if they are to accomplish their educational goals. The problem, therefore, was how to provide music specialists with promotional ideas for raising the funds necessary to operate effective music programs.

Jean Giraudoux, Anachronizer Of Myth, Larry Allen Fletcher Aug 1962

Jean Giraudoux, Anachronizer Of Myth, Larry Allen Fletcher

Graduate Student Research Papers

This paper will attempt to show the anachronism of setting, theme, tradition, character delineation, and speech that Giraudoux deliberately puts into his dramatic world. Only two of his neo-Hellenic plays are studied in detail tor this paper, Amphytryon 38 and Tiger at the Gates (In France called La Guerre de Trois n’aura pas lieu--The Trojan War will not take place). His third neo-Hellenic play, Electra, will be commented upon briefly. The paper will also attempt to show how Giraudoux's anachronism is used as a device to give contemporary meaning to traditional myth. The plays are considered as dramatic literature, not …

The English Madrigal School, Wayne Delbert Hunziker Aug 1962

The English Madrigal School, Wayne Delbert Hunziker

Graduate Student Research Papers

Many present day directors and performers show little stylistic understanding of original madrigalian literature. This music, with its Renaissance character, requires specific knowledge for correct performance. In view of this, a study of this nature seemed of value.

An Analytical Study Of The Formal Treatment Of The Cantus Firmus In Thirty Chorale Preludes On Well-Known Hymn Tunes Op. 68, 69, And 70, By Flor Peeters, E. Donnell Blackham

Theses and Dissertations

This study represents an effort to analyze the forms used by Flor Peeters in his Thirty Chorale Preludes on Well-Known Hymn Tunes, op. 68, 69, and 70. Through this analysis it has been found that Flor Peeters has systematically used certain devices in the treatment of the cantus firmus. Furthermore, these devices can be used as a criterion in developing a classification system for the chorale preludes, which logically divide into six groups or types.

The first type includes the chorale preludes in which the composition begins immediately with the first phrase of the chorale melody and continues without interruption …

A Translation Of Chapter Lxvi Of Book I, Part I Of Fra Lodovico Zacconi's Prattica Di Musica, Diran Akmajian Jul 1962

A Translation Of Chapter Lxvi Of Book I, Part I Of Fra Lodovico Zacconi's Prattica Di Musica, Diran Akmajian

Theses and Dissertations

It is common knowledge that the practice of improvisation, variation, and ornamentation was widespread during the late Renaissance. Numerous authors testify to this, and scores of manuals exist that ''teach11 this particular skill. One of the most important theorists to write such a manual was Lodovico Zacconi, a monk of the order of Saint Augustine. Chapter LXVI of Part I of his Prattica di Musica is one of the most detailed of its kind. Because there is a genuine revival today of performance of Renaissance vocal music, and because sufficient knowledge is yet to be had of the practices of …

A Search For The Archetype Of The Greek Gospel Lectionary, Karl Rutz Jul 1962

A Search For The Archetype Of The Greek Gospel Lectionary, Karl Rutz

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The text of the Greek Gospel lectionary has been the object of fairly extensive scholarly research for only the last thirty years. In this period a strange scholarly consensus has come about. Although no one would maintain that the body of manuscript evidence for the Greek New Testament is homogeneous, a rather widespread opinion today is that the Greek Gospel lectionary is textually a unit.

Total Mobilization, William Bingham Jun 1962

Total Mobilization, William Bingham

English Language and Literature ETDs

This literary treatment develops the condition of suspended animation which reaches its completion in the Jamesian character in "The Ambassadors" who makes mock-sinister references to a 'product' which he never names. Literature with all its claptrap about the 'vital' issues of love and adventure on the battlefield and in the drawing-room--this ridiculous cud chewed over and over makes me gag. Even the current prattle about 'existence' is an evasion, perhaps the supreme evasion...

The success of an 'embattled style' lies in the poet's ability to sustain generalisation without abstracting it from living experience. A limit of individuation must be transcended …

Barebone's Parliament, Annette Ewing Jun 1962

Barebone's Parliament, Annette Ewing

History ETDs

The Barebone's Parliament had probably been known by as many as any parliament in British history. Before it voted to call itself the Parliament of the Commonwealth of England, it was known as the new representative, the new assembly, and similar phrases. Is contemporaries refereed to it as the Parliament, the little Parliament, or the late Parliament; or, if the person was a royalist, as the so-called Parliament, the mock Parliament, or the mongrel Parliament. The name Barebone's Parliament was apparently of later origin, possibly after the Restoration. Later names also include: The Assembly of Saints, the Nominated Parliament, the …

Fray Francisco De Ayeta In The Service Of New Mexico, 1673-1683, Russell L. Hankins Jun 1962

Fray Francisco De Ayeta In The Service Of New Mexico, 1673-1683, Russell L. Hankins

History ETDs

During a critical decade (1673-1683) in the history of colonial New Mexico Friar Francisco de Ayeta, a Franciscan friar, performed outstanding service to the Spanish Crown in and for this isolated province on the northern frontier of New Spain. With considerable justice it may be said the Ayeta's adroit presentation of the interests of the colony at the viceregal court in Mexico City, his skillful management of the caravans which conveyed urgently needed supplies and reinforcement from New Spain, and his timely council and prompt actions in time of emergency were in large measure responsible for preventing the complete abandonment …

The South-Carolina Gazette, 1763-1775: Patriot Southern Newspaper., J. Ralph Randolph Jun 1962

The South-Carolina Gazette, 1763-1775: Patriot Southern Newspaper., J. Ralph Randolph

History ETDs

The purpose of this thesis as originally conceived was an attempt to study how the South-Carolina Gazette reported the series of crises that led up to American Revolution and whenever possible, to see how the newspaper influenced the movement. The other Charles-Town newspapers of the period, the South-Carolina and American General Gazette and the South-Carolina Gazette; and Country Journal, were also studied as means of checking the coverage of the Gazette. However, the Gazette was examined more thoroughly and more painstakingly than the other journals. The plan has been followed for the most part; however, some additions were mad. Because …

History Of The Province Of Pánuco In New Spain, 1518-1533, Donald E. Chipman Jun 1962

History Of The Province Of Pánuco In New Spain, 1518-1533, Donald E. Chipman

History ETDs

The province of Pánuco, also designated as Vitoria Garayana, had an important place in the annals of New Spain in the third and fourth decades of the sixteenth century. In later times, after the discovery and occupation of richer areas, the history of the Pánuco region had only minor significance in the evolution of colonial Mexico.

Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen Jun 1962

Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an attempt to investigate self-examination on the basis of Paul's statement in I Cor. 11:2e. Since the context of the passage is very important, Chapter II studies the immediate context of I Corinthians 11 and the wider context of the entire epistle. Paul's interest throughout the epistle is the concern that the Corinthians recognize Christ as the κúριος in their lives.

A Comparison Of Hegel's Christian Philosophy With Historic Christian Theology, Fred H. Stennfeld Jun 1962

A Comparison Of Hegel's Christian Philosophy With Historic Christian Theology, Fred H. Stennfeld

Bachelor of Divinity

Throughout the ages man has wrestled with the problem of “maturing" the Christian faith, of presenting something that intelligent mind could grasp and hold on to. Beginning with gnosticism and carrying on through the ages to today and tomorrow, this process has been and will be carried on. This paper concerns itself with one such effort, the effort of philosopher George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel to present a system of Christian philosophy to satisfy the grasp of the "higher mind." This paper will show what happens to historic Christianity when such effort is carried out.

The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron Jun 1962

The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper does not purport to resolve the question of the centuries with an air of final authority. Rather it is an attempt to delve once again into the New. Testament, in particular the letters of Paul, to find there what proceed with the search it will be necessary to investigate what different authors have said concerning various key passages, and to weigh, their statements on the scales of other Pauline, New Testament, and Old Testament evidence. Throughout we propose to adhere to the principle that Scripture interprets itself, so that one passage in Paul must be seen in the …

The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten Jun 1962

The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the contention of this writer that, although these various theological interpretations may offer a partial explanation to the enigma of Luke's "central section," they do not adequately account for the diversity or arrangement of material. It is the writer's thesis that Luke may have selected a part of his materials for the "central section" from a collection of pericopae used to train missionaries in the early Church. That such a written or oral tradition existed before St. Luke wrote his Gospel may be inferred from St. Paul's sermon at Antioch in Pisidia, "But God raised him from the …
