A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta Jul 1966

A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta

Master's Theses

Legal medicine can be defined as "the aoience of the application of medical knowledge to the purposes of the law." Therefore, its limits are on the one hand the requirements of the laws and on the other the whole range of medicine, that is to say, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and all the sciences auxiliary thereto, that is, chemistry, physics, botany, et cetera; all lend their aid when necessity arises and in the same case to enable a court of law to arrive at a proper conclusion on a contested question affecting life or property."

An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett Jul 1966

An Evaluation Of The Autobiographical Interpretation Of Samson Agonistes, Edward P. Crockett

Master's Theses

Certainly, every reader of Samson Agonistes who is at all familiar with the circumstances of Milton's life, his thought, and the history of his times has been attracted by obvious parallels between 'the poet and certain aspects or his dramatic creation, and he may understandably assume that the presentation or the sufferings of Samson constitute intentional, hidden autobiography. To assume even the obvious, however, is something too blithely done. A little research into this area of Miltoniana will reveal to him that scholarly opinion concerning Samson Agonistes and autobiography is greatly varied and that some scholars are inclined not only …

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman Jul 1966

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman

Masters Theses

Introduction

Otto of Freising is best known as the philosopher of history who wrote The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa. Unfortunately, the interest Otto evokes is often limited to his philosophy of history. Many never go beyond the German historian Wilman's view of Otto as "the first to have a conception of the world-sequence of history."1

Otto of Freising's two historical works, The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa, are important for more than his philosophy of history. The values and ideals Otto reflects in his writings are valuable in giving one insights …

The Escape Motif In The Modern American Novel: Mark Twain To Carson Mccullers, Samuel Bluefarb Jul 1966

The Escape Motif In The Modern American Novel: Mark Twain To Carson Mccullers, Samuel Bluefarb

English Language and Literature ETDs

The scope of this study is selective rather than comprehensive. The works discussed are probably the more significant and typical examples of the theme of flight, or escape, in the modern American novel. Many more works might have been included which reveal this particular motif, but the result would have been repetitious rather than revealing, massive rather than searching, broad rather than deep, in the nature of a survey rather than a probe. To compensate partially for any works neglected, omitted, or unconsciously slighted, I have included a two-part appendix. This appendix is divided into American novels of the pre-Twain …

The Agrarian Revolution In Kenya, Margie Senkowski Jul 1966

The Agrarian Revolution In Kenya, Margie Senkowski

Masters Theses

Introduction

The objective of this research has been to present a picture of the revolutionary agricultural changes that have been taking place for the last few years in the East African country of Kenya. Kenya is an agricultural country; its economy is dependent almost entirely on agricultural production. In the words of Jomo Kenyatta, Prime Minister of Kenya, "To achieve the growth essential for increased welfare, the country will continue to rely on agriculture, which employs most of our people and provides almost all of our exports."

The progress is agriculture is helping to transform Kenya from a primitive tribal …

Philosophy And Psychical Research, Gerald C. Shelton Jun 1966

Philosophy And Psychical Research, Gerald C. Shelton

Philosophy ETDs

When science brings forth a new body of knowledge – or even a new bit of knowledge – it is the duty of philosophy to examine it to see what implications it has for our overall understanding of the universe. Does it point to a new answer to some perplexing philosophical problem, or reinforce one of several alternative answers? Or does it present a new problem which a satisfactory system of metaphysics must be able answer? Such questions should be asked. For the ultimate goal of philosophy is a complete understanding of the universe and man’s place in it. It …

A Political Portrait: FéLix Varela Y Morales, 1788-1853, Gemma Marie Del Duca Jun 1966

A Political Portrait: FéLix Varela Y Morales, 1788-1853, Gemma Marie Del Duca

American Studies ETDs

This is a political portrait of a Cuban priest and patriot, Félix Varela y Morales. One of the most fascinating and influential figures in the great history of Cuba during the 19th century, he moved easily from philosophy and science to politics and finally to theology. Others have dealt in some detail with Varela’s accomplishments as reformer and teacher of philosophy in Cuba (Antonio Hernández Travieso) and as Catholic apologist and priest in New York (José Ignacio Rodríguez, Doctor Joseph McCadden.) A few Cuban scholars have examined phases of Félix Varela’s political career, but thus far no single work …

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg Jun 1966

Federal Naval Operations In The Gulf Of Mexico, 1860-1862, Mitchell S. Goldberg

History ETDs

When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office as President of the United States on March 4, 1861, the military establishment was unprepared for the coming struggle. The Navy Department was probably the most feeble of the armed services. It did not have the men, vessels or armament and lacked the legal authority to increase or strengthen them.

The Early Philosophical Method Of Jean-Paul Sartre, Walter Richard Wood Jun 1966

The Early Philosophical Method Of Jean-Paul Sartre, Walter Richard Wood

Philosophy ETDs

Existentialism, in post war years, has achieved not only an international philosophical standing, but in addition has made itself felt in a multitude of contemporary affairs - from psychology and literature to politics and social ethics. A large measure of this propagation of existentialism has been due to the varied accomplishments of Jean-Paul Sartre. As a forceful intellectual, Sartre continues to arouse support and controversy for his radical and dramatic ideas in every field he approaches; yet at the heart of all this activity is the man’s philosophy. Although Sartre has contributed in major ways to philosophical discourse, there is …

Everyman's Usable Past: The American Historical Novel, Joel Mackey Jones Jun 1966

Everyman's Usable Past: The American Historical Novel, Joel Mackey Jones

American Studies ETDs

The intent of this dissertation will be to define, and by defining defend, an art form too often disdained as being a literary mélange des genres—the American historical novel. To do so seems appropriate for a dissertation written in an area of scholarship often considered an academic mélange des genres—American Studies.

An Analysis Of Critical Approaches In The Revista Iberoamericana, From 1950 To 1960, Margretta Leroy Jun 1966

An Analysis Of Critical Approaches In The Revista Iberoamericana, From 1950 To 1960, Margretta Leroy

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Nearly all students of Latin American Literature come to their study with a background or parallel study in Peninsular Literature and at least one other literature, such as French or English. Such a student finds that until the last decade of the nineteenth century, when the Modernist movement exerted its influence, the literature of Spanish American was either scorned or ignored outside its own continent, that as a serious literary study it was not a part of university curricula until about thirty years ago, and that the critical writing he has been accustomed to consulting in other literatures is simply …

Overland Journeys In Oregon And California Of The U.S. Navy Exploring Expedition, William Collins Jun 1966

Overland Journeys In Oregon And California Of The U.S. Navy Exploring Expedition, William Collins

History ETDs

The great Pacific Northwest was a region of vast forests, snowcapped mountains, and swift-flowing rivers. The history of this area is a story of international rivalry. From time to time five nations had pretensions to the rich Oregon Territory—Spain, Great Britain, Russia, France, and the United States.

Mathieu Bidar's Hippolyte: A Critical Edition, Evyenia L. Triandafilidis Jun 1966

Mathieu Bidar's Hippolyte: A Critical Edition, Evyenia L. Triandafilidis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The Hippolyte of Mathieu Bidar has nos been reprinted since the original edition of 1675, nor has there been a modern critical edition. The desire to do a critical edition of this tragedy was prompted by the prevalence of the theme of Phaedra and Hippolytus, which has been presented repeatedly on the French stage, and because of the editor’s interest in the role that the Greek tradition played in the French classicalism of the seventeenth century. Copies of Bidar’s Hippolyte are rare, since only three are known to be extant. The manuscript used is a copy of the original edition, …

New Meaning In Old Forms, John Lawrence Ward Jun 1966

New Meaning In Old Forms, John Lawrence Ward

Art & Art History ETDs

This paper has three objectives; first, it is a research project in which pictures which appear significant to me are analyzed to account for their power; second, it is designed to assist the reader in understanding the problems and concerns which I face as a painter and the reasons for my admiration of those pictures discussed in this paper; and third, in keeping with Eliot’s view that new works of art change the value and meaning of previous art, I hope to provide some insight into these past works as seen through my paintings and the recent art which has …

The Voice In The Wilderness And The Coming One-- The Old Testament As The Link Between John The Baptist And Jesus Christ, Walter Rosin Jun 1966

The Voice In The Wilderness And The Coming One-- The Old Testament As The Link Between John The Baptist And Jesus Christ, Walter Rosin

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

As already indicated, in dealing with the question of the relationship between Jesus and John it is easily possible to overlook what is at least an equally important area, the content of the Baptist's message. In addition, an emphasis upon the environmental factors tends to lead to a generalization regarding the similarity of one movement to another without making sufficient allowance for original elements or for elements whose origin may not be in the contemporary scene but rather in a previous era. It is this content of the Baptist's message which has often been dealt with piecemeal in journal articles …

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske Jun 1966

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to review the various interpretations of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration throughout the history of the Church, to examine them in the light of their environments, and finally to reach a conclusion as to the meaning of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration on the basis of an exegetical study or the text in its historical background. It is contended that once a true understanding of baptismal regeneration has been reached other problems dealing with baptism will be readily resolved. It is also contended that with a right understanding or baptismal regeneration the danger …

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman Jun 1966

Pauline Eschatology In 2 Corinthians 5_1-10, Robert Hausman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to compare and contrast the various interpretations in an attempt to discover their strengths and weaknesses. If possible, some guidelines will be suggested for the interpretation of this passage and probabilities will be noted where answers are unavailable. The complex question of historical background will be discussed as it relates to the various interpretations, but it cannot be treated in depth.

Pierpont Morgan Manuscript 324: Le Roman De La Rose; A Study In Social Transition, Louise A. Miller Jun 1966

Pierpont Morgan Manuscript 324: Le Roman De La Rose; A Study In Social Transition, Louise A. Miller

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Art and literature, significant forms of human expression, serve as two valuable cultural sources for the understanding of a given civilization. The philosophical rationalism of Voltaire and the mythological paintings of Boucher, as contrasted to the concern with self of Chateaubriand and the tragically realistic paintings of Gericault, provide an important expressive background to the understanding of society before and after the French Revolution. These sources provide a broader insight into the societies of the time, their influences upon and their reactions to the immediate historical event. Similarly, the starkness of the paintings of Buffet and the preoccupation with the …

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan May 1966

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan

History ETDs

This thesis deals with the military career and New Mexico governorship of Facundo Malgares. His career, from approximately 1800 to 1822, after Mexico had become independent of Spain, illustrated the operation of Spanish institutions during the last days of Spanish rule in the northern interior province of Mexico. Of special importance were problems associated with Spanish-Italian and Anglo-Spanish relations when the Indian was still powerful and the United States was beginning its westward expansion. Spanish land policy in New Mexico and its continued effect on individual holdings after United States possession was and continues to be important in New Mexico. …

Sebastian Vizcaino And Spanish Expansion In He Pacific Ocean: 1580-1630, W. Michael Mathes May 1966

Sebastian Vizcaino And Spanish Expansion In He Pacific Ocean: 1580-1630, W. Michael Mathes

History ETDs

Much has been written relative to the history of the early discoveries of California. In almost all works treating of early California, the name of Sebastian Vizcaino appears, but apart from mention of his voyage to California in 1602, little more is said relative to this explorer. Furthermore, in many instances, what little is said is in a critical vein. Nevertheless, no single individual has more contact with California during the first two and one-half centuries following its discovery than Vizcaino, and, while monuments and parks have been named for his predecessor, Rodriguez Cabrillo, few monuments have been named for …
