Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr. Apr 1968

Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr.

Graduate Thesis Collection

The present study is an attempt to bring into focus one of the many bases of party power over Soviet citizens. It is no great revelation that the Soviet government has long indulged in anti-American propanda, but the continuity, elaboratness and virulence of ths "crusade of hatred" demands further study. It is essential that such study be undertaken parallel with an appraisal of Soviet-American relations since 1917.

In outlining the chronological development of anti-American libel campaign, some space will be devoted to methodology, technology and apparent purposes of the Soviet propagandists. Space limitations preclude an elaborate study of Soviet propaganda …

The Image Of The Jew In James Joyce's Ulysses, Phyllis Joyce Cohen Levy Apr 1968

The Image Of The Jew In James Joyce's Ulysses, Phyllis Joyce Cohen Levy

Master's Theses

Since the beginning of English literature, the Jew has been portrayed as a villain. Edgar Rosenberg and Montague Frank Madder most affirmed the conviction in each of their studies of the Jew in English literature. However, the conclusion that the Jew is still portrayed as a villain is invalid because the image has changed. It is my intention to examine this change, focusing particularly on the character of Leopold Bloom in James Joyce 's Ulysses.

The Significance Of The Concepts Διαθηκη And ‘Αιμα Toward Understanding A Passover Background Of The Lord's Supper, Armand Sailer Mar 1968

The Significance Of The Concepts Διαθηκη And ‘Αιμα Toward Understanding A Passover Background Of The Lord's Supper, Armand Sailer

Bachelor of Divinity

The importance of such a study is not just that the events in the life of Jesus be clarified and harmonized, but that the real meaning of the Supper may be ascertained. If the Supper has no connection with the Passover, our theology of the Eucharist needs to be re-evaluated and harmonized to whatever is the real intent of Christ's institution. The aim of this study is to investigate the significance of the concepts διαθήκη and αί̑μα toward such a Passover understanding of the Supper. Chapter II will examine the four accounts of the institution, evaluate the critical variants, and …

The Hermeneutics Of Johannes Christian Konrad Von Hofmann With Special Reference To His Influence On Georg Stoeckhardt, Richard Baepler Mar 1968

The Hermeneutics Of Johannes Christian Konrad Von Hofmann With Special Reference To His Influence On Georg Stoeckhardt, Richard Baepler

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of sacred Scriptures and revelation, and of the development or the view of sacred Scriptures and revelation dominant in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod through a study of the hermeneutical principles of Johann Christian Konrad von Hofmann with special reference to his influence on Georg Stoeckhardt. These two men have been selected for study not only because of the teacher-student relationship which existed between them but also because both men were giants of conservative confessional Lutheran scholarship and both have exerted an enduring influence, the …

A Sachkritik Of First Corinthians 13 Authenticity And Integrity, John Hollar Feb 1968

A Sachkritik Of First Corinthians 13 Authenticity And Integrity, John Hollar

Bachelor of Divinity

The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians happens to be one of those documents of the early Christian community which was to become a subject of debate, sooner or later, for the form critical school of exegesis. Evidence for this issues from the fact that it was in 1910 when Johannes Weiss wrote what still remains as the classical form-critical analysis of First Corinthians. Then in1912 Adolf Harnack presented the second great contribution of scholarship concerning this chapter of agape, with his article "The Apostle Paul's Hymn of Love and Its Religious-Historical Significance." From this time on it almost …

John Gay's Comic View Of Society, Bruce Frederick Hann Feb 1968

John Gay's Comic View Of Society, Bruce Frederick Hann

English Language and Literature ETDs

INTRODUCTION

Up to 1963 Sven Armens was the only student of Gay who had considered the intention behind Gay's work as a whole. Unfortunately Armens saw Gay's poetry almost exclusively as autobiographical and moral, reflecting the nostalgia of a country boy condemned to life in the city but setting forth in his poetry country life as ideal; city life as less than ideal at best, vicious at worst. Armens’ emphasis on Gay's nostalgia for the country is too strong, 1f not completely mistaken. I have undertaken, therefore, an exploration of Gay’ s general attitude toward his world with special attention …

The Role Of The Quote From Psalm 82 In John 10:34-36, Colin Liske Feb 1968

The Role Of The Quote From Psalm 82 In John 10:34-36, Colin Liske

Master of Divinity Thesis

Our investigation will therefore begin with a detailed study of the present position of research regarding John 1034-36and an analysis in detail of the two points mentioned in Jesus’ argument. The investigation of the first point in the argument will be a critical study of Psalm 82, both in its ancient and modern exegesis, and the study of the second will include an analysis of early second century A.D. Rabbinic exegesis of three Old Testament passages which deal with the concept of blasphemy, Finally, we will attempt to explicate the relation between the two points in their immediate and broader …

An Inquiry Of Dialogical Preaching: Its Purpose, Procedure, And Evaluation, Edward Hummel Feb 1968

An Inquiry Of Dialogical Preaching: Its Purpose, Procedure, And Evaluation, Edward Hummel

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and evaluate dialogical preaching as a possible means for improving the effectiveness of communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ to man. The process of dialogical preaching shall be examined not with the intention that it should abolish the present monological form of preaching, but rather that it might be considered as a means of supplementing and improving that preaching which attempts to integrate man’s faith in Christ with the happenings of his everyday life.

Eucharistic Sacrifice: An Expression Of Good For Others, William Hempel Feb 1968

Eucharistic Sacrifice: An Expression Of Good For Others, William Hempel

We would hope to demonstrate that the entire topic of Eucharistic sacrifice might be placed upon a much broader base than has been the case prior to this. It is hoped that this study will reveal the possibility of doing this with7some profit as well as increase our present understanding of the historic background of eucharistic sacrifice.

Appeal To Arms, The Army And Politics In El Salvador, 1931-1964, Robert Varney Elam Jan 1968

Appeal To Arms, The Army And Politics In El Salvador, 1931-1964, Robert Varney Elam

History ETDs

Not since 1931 has El Salvador experienced civil supremacy in national affairs nor is it likely that this tiny nation will witness the withdrawal of military officers from politics in the near future. However, the mere fact of uninterrupted military rule offers little understanding of the variety of roles played by the armed forces or does it revel the reasons for changes in the pattern of civil-military relations during the past three decades. Soon after the turn of the century, maintaining internal order replaced national defense as the primary role of El Salvador’s armed forces. The reduction of the foreign …

The Chant-Based Polyphonic Magnificat Of Orlando Di Lasso, Lindsey Peters Jan 1968

The Chant-Based Polyphonic Magnificat Of Orlando Di Lasso, Lindsey Peters

Honors Theses

The polyphonic magnificat, according to Gustave Reese1 one of the most widely used forms of composition during the Renaissance, has received relatively little attention from music scholars. Examples of this genre can be found among the works of nearly every leading composer of the Renaissance. Certain practices are characteristic of the genre. Some are the result of the nature of the chant structure. Others stem from the traditional practices in magnificat composition. I shall discuss several of these characteristics as demonstrated in the works of Orlando di Lasso.

A Humorist In Hollywood: Robert Benchley And His Comedy Films, Robert William Redding Jan 1968

A Humorist In Hollywood: Robert Benchley And His Comedy Films, Robert William Redding

American Studies ETDs

Although he preferred to always be known as writer, Robert Benchley gained some renown, during the latter half of this career, as a performer in motion pictures. His activities in Hollywood included some script writing, but he was especially noted as a character actor in feature films, and as author and star of forty-eight comedy short subjects produced between 1928 and 1945. In spite of his dissatisfaction with this phase of his career, and his lack of real interest in motion pictures, his short subjects represent an important segment of hi achievement as a humorist.

Benchley's emergence as a performer …

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer Jan 1968

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …

The survey has the threefold objectives of: (1) surveying and recording of sites in Goshen Valley; (2) providing information on the material culture of the ancient inhabitants of the valley; and (3) discovering whether there was a dividing line during the Fremont occupation between the Provo and Sevier regions as outlined by Jones (1961), Green (1964), and Ambler (1966).

To this end, seventy-four sites are described along with the related material culture with an analysis of the material culture in …

A Folk History Of The Manti Temple: A Study Of The Folklore And Traditions Connected With The Settlement Of Manti, Utah, And The Building Of The Temple, Barbara Lee Hargis

Theses and Dissertations

For some time I have been collecting folk material of the pioneers of Sanpete County, Utah, and their subsequent building of the Manti Temple. A few of the county's senior citizens witnessed part of the construction in the late 1870's and 1880's and the dedication in 1888 of the Temple. Many more are descendants of men and women who were directly involved in the building of the Temple and in the early work done there after its construction.

The stories that these people tell are significant. A collection of them represents a rich folk history of a religious, pioneering people …

The Preclassical Symphony With An Analysis Of Representative Works By Georg Christoph Wagenseil, Michael Thomas Roeder Jan 1968

The Preclassical Symphony With An Analysis Of Representative Works By Georg Christoph Wagenseil, Michael Thomas Roeder

Music ETDs

The symphony evolved from the Italian opera overture called the sinfonia. The earliest concert-symphonies were written in the 1730’s and 1740’s and exhibit the same formal traits as the opera sinfonias written at the same time. Both consisted of three movements in contrasting tempi: fast-slow-fast. Occasionally a minuet was substituted for the last movement and aby 1765 or 1770 the minuet became the third movement of the then standard four-movement plan: fast-slow-minuet-fast.

Some movements, particularly the first in these symphonies demonstrate the growth of sonata form from the binary form common in Baroque dance movements. By the 1750’s and 1760’s …
