Maham's Tower, Fort Watson And The Southern Campaign Of 1781, James Howard Gump Jan 1970

Maham's Tower, Fort Watson And The Southern Campaign Of 1781, James Howard Gump

History ETDs

In describing the Revolutionary War, historians often neglect many events which have played important roles in the war. Such is the case with Fort Watson, a British post which became the object of conquest by Francois Marion and Henry Lee during the southern campaign of 1781. The method employed in this operation was unique; the consequences of the success which was achieved were crucial. After the victories of the colonist in 1776 at Moore’s Creek Bridge and Fort Sullivan, the southern colonies had been relatively free from British threat until the fall of 1778. Then British eyes turned southward. In …

The Development Of A Method Book For Teaching Adults Beginning Piano, Carolyn Meier Flora Jan 1970

The Development Of A Method Book For Teaching Adults Beginning Piano, Carolyn Meier Flora

Music ETDs

There are few instruction books for teaching adults beginning piano. The scarcity of teaching material for adult students and the deficiencies of the available materials have led to this study. The purpose of this study was to develop a beginning piano instruction book for adults to include (1) a history of music; (2) the basic elements of music, i.e., melody, rhythm, harmony, and form; (3) basic chording; and (4) music from each of the principal periods of history. The objectives of the instruction book were to provide the student with enough musical experience to (1) be able to read music; …

Apostolicity As A Church Response To Gnosticism In Irenaeus, Gook Han Bai Jan 1970

Apostolicity As A Church Response To Gnosticism In Irenaeus, Gook Han Bai

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is based on the praise that both Irenaeus and the Gnostics regarded Christian teachings and practices as Apostolic tradition. Irenaeus regarded Christian teachings and practices as Apostolic tradition, and, accordingly, appealed to the authority or the Apostles in defending the Christian faith. Apostolic tradition, for Irenaeus, must be guaranteed and safeguarded by the unbroken historical. succession from one generation to the next. Irenaeus laid much emphasis on the importance of the Apostles in Christian teachings and practices. However, the Apostles without successors are practically meaningless to him. The concept of being "in the church" also played an important …

To Maintain The Sublime: Art, Reality, And Society In The Work Of Ezra Pound, Camilla Bunker Haase Jan 1970

To Maintain The Sublime: Art, Reality, And Society In The Work Of Ezra Pound, Camilla Bunker Haase

Honors Papers

It is the purpose of this paper to find out what that conception was: to extract from Pound's critical writings the fundamental beliefs about the nature and function of art which governed his activities. During the most active part of his life, one thus discovers, Pound was governed by a mimetic theory of art: a work of art, he thought, is an accurate representation of an artist's impression of reality. Poe can-thus provide reliable information about the way people respond to reality, about the way they behave--data which, Pound believed, can and indeed must be used in formulating; ethical codes. …

A Survey Of The Snake-Handling Cult Of West Virginia, Kenneth Paul Ambrose Jan 1970

A Survey Of The Snake-Handling Cult Of West Virginia, Kenneth Paul Ambrose

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

For over half a century the snake-handling cult has been active in the United States, especially in the Appalachian area. There has been little scientific information published about this cult. The two major works were mainly confined to a single church in Durham, North Carolina, and a single church in Scrabble Creek, West Virginia. This investigator studied four churches in West Virginia, and one in Durham, North Carolina, for two and a half years to gain a deeper understanding of these people and their religious behavior.

Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937- Jan 1970

Freedom In Heidegger., John Duffy Trager 1937-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents an investigation into the meaning and development of freedom in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. Part I deals primarily with Sein und Zeit. Dasein, human reality, is defined both as a finite, thrown being-in-the-world and as a free entity, projecting its possibilities. Dasein achieves authenticity in the renunciation of the crowd and by embracing its ultimate possibility--death. The conclusion to Part I argues for the identity, in Heidegger's thought, of finite freedom and temporality. Part II deals with Gelassenheit, a work of Heidegger's latter period. Freedom is expressed in a new vocabulary. Man must release himself but …

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen Jan 1970

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The conflict between the totalitarian forces of fascism and the democracies was not confined to just the battlefields of Western Europe or the beaches of the South Pacific. Between 1933 and 1943 the forces of these two conflicting ideologies were engaged in a struggle to win the confidence of the people of Latin America. The success that the United States ultimately had in winning the trust and support of the Latin America nations bolstered the morale of America while at the same time denying the Nazis an important strategic and propaganda triumph.

In this study the activities of the Nazis …

El Periodismo Paraguayo Y Su Actitud Frente A La Guerra De La Triple Alianza Y Francisco Solano LóPez., Gladis Fois Maresma

Student Instruction Manual For Black And White Film Processing And Printing, Stephen Michael Delay Jan 1970

Student Instruction Manual For Black And White Film Processing And Printing, Stephen Michael Delay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For most subject matter the ideal classroom situation would allow a one-to-one relationship between instructor and student. In teaching basic photography this is especially true because of the great number of steps involved in producing a finished photograph and because each step must be done correctly to achieve good results. Time won't permit the instructor to effectively follow each student through all the steps involved, and, ideally the student should be allowed to work at his or her own speed. The one-to-one relationship therefore, isn't possible in most photography classes and, for that reason, something is needed to take the …

A Study Of The Factors Affecting Lds Institute Enrollment Among Students From Homes Of Parents Who Are Inactive In The Lds Church, Boyd Leslie Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine if there are differences in characteristics of home environment, school environment, or within the students themselves, between college students enrolling in classes taught at the LDS Institute of Religion, who come from homes where both parents are "inactive" in the LDS church, and a similar group of students who do not enroll.

The Aegritudo Perdicae, Edited With Translation And Commentary, John Mortimer Hunt Jr. Jan 1970

The Aegritudo Perdicae, Edited With Translation And Commentary, John Mortimer Hunt Jr.

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The text of the Aegritudo Perdicae (a Latin epyllion in 290 hexameters, of uncertain date [perhaps fifth century A.D.] and authorship) depends on one fifteenth-century manuscript whose errors are multitudinous. From its editio princeps in 1877 to the present time, this difficult poem has received three editions and occasional snippets of exegesis, but otherwise little published work.

The present dissertation includes a completely reconstituted text and apparatus criticus, with translation and commentary. The author proposes the following emendations: 7. aliisque, 67. et, 126. Oedipoden, 133. discusserat, 231. peruenitque, 249. sed quae (for the gloss iussisti …

Studies In The Hellenistic Sculpture Of The Island Of Rhodes, Gloria S. Merker Jan 1970

Studies In The Hellenistic Sculpture Of The Island Of Rhodes, Gloria S. Merker

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The study of Hellenistic sculpture is often based upon its division into local schools centering around Pergamon, Alexandria and Rhodes. The underlying premise of the present study is that if a distinctly Rhodian Hellenistic school of sculpture existed, it should be possible to define its characteristics by means of a study of the extant sculpture of known Rhodian provenance, supplemented by the preserved statue bases. If it is not possible to demonstrate recurring technical, iconographic and stylistic traits within the Rhodian material, it may be assumed that the theory of regional schools should not be applied to Rhodes.

The Agony Of Lindsay Almond : Virginia's Transition From "Massive Resistance" To "Freedom Of Choice", John G. Mizell Jr Jan 1970

The Agony Of Lindsay Almond : Virginia's Transition From "Massive Resistance" To "Freedom Of Choice", John G. Mizell Jr

Honors Theses

An analysis of the events in Virginia resulting from the Brown desegregation decision of 1954 has justifiably been the subject of considerable study. The importance of this period of "massive resistance" to integrated schools should not be minimized because the South looked primarily to the Old Dominion for leadership. However, studies undertaken thus far have concentrated principally on the initial reaction of Virginia to the decision and the formation of the maze of obstructionist measures contrived to prevent integration, while largely neglecting the important aspect of the state's use of the "freedom of choice" policy in Virginia's schools.

Henry Parker's Doctrine Of The Consent Of The Governed /, Barbara Cahoon Jan 1970

Henry Parker's Doctrine Of The Consent Of The Governed /, Barbara Cahoon

Honors Theses

The role of Parliament in England's history has been one of interest to historians for centuries. The background and origin of a rule based on the people's consent has been attributed to many people in England's past. I hope to show that one of the first men who developed this theory of government which was later taken up by Locke and other philosophers was Henry Parker. The people choosing their types of government and laws was a new idea that few had voiced. Parker writing in the 1640's saw the tendency of government evolving to Parliamentary sovereignty, not monarchy.

The Embodying Image: A Design For A Computer-Aided Analysis Of Distorted Body Imagery In Gulliver's Travels, Mary S. Erbaugh Jan 1970

The Embodying Image: A Design For A Computer-Aided Analysis Of Distorted Body Imagery In Gulliver's Travels, Mary S. Erbaugh

Honors Papers

Of all the imagery available to the writer the body's imagery is perhaps the most powerful and immediate. Using arms and legs and eyebrow in his work he insures himself of a bond with his reader, for each reader has his own arms and legs and eyebrows to identify with in his mind and experience. No one can read Swift's terse sentence, "Last week I saw a woman flayed, and you will hardly believe how much it altered her person for the worse" without feeling a shudder of horror and sympathy in his own body. Travels into Several Remote Nations …

Characteristics Of Style In The Song Cycle Don Quichotte À DulcinéE, Bruce Gyger Dodge Jan 1970

Characteristics Of Style In The Song Cycle Don Quichotte À DulcinéE, Bruce Gyger Dodge

All Master's Theses

As Don Quichotte à Dulcinée is representative of contemporary vocal literature, an investigation into its style characteristics would seem to have value. Through the performance of the song cycle this writer has come to appreciate and recognize that an understanding of French and the style characteristics of this composer are necessary for an artistic rendition.

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn Jan 1970

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn

All Master's Theses

From the desolation of a sterile Waste Land populated by straw men, Eliot's dramas increasingly portray a world of great meaning and hope. His early dramas portray a hostile and insensible world which must be fought and completely rejected by religious persons who are called to martyrdom and sainthood. Eliot's acceptance of the material world and comfort with its society brings a steady transformation of his spiritual vision when at the end of his dramas the world is one of common people who strive to find meaning and "make the best of a bad job," illumined by a vision of …

Prolegomenon To A Neo-Kantian Student Heuristic, John W. Nageley Iii Jan 1970

Prolegomenon To A Neo-Kantian Student Heuristic, John W. Nageley Iii

All Master's Theses

The author attempts an in-depth study of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in order to prepare a text for college students in composition courses. It was to be a text designed to help students come to terms with some of the more perplexing problems of man's intellectual life by providing them with the means for understanding the structure of thought. As it stands now, though, this is a prolegomen to that text. It contains the essential theory for the text, but lacks sufficient examples to make it readily accessible to the student, and it lacks the exercises needed to …

A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring Jan 1970

A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring

All Master's Theses

During the decades of the 1820's and 1830's, educators in this country studied the European schools where the principles of Johann H. Pestalozzi (1746-1827), Friedrick Froebel (1782-1852), and Emanuel Fellenberg (1771-1844) had been put into practice with favorable results. The Prussian normal schools established by Frederick the Great were some of the best in the world. American educators came back with glowing reports of the progress Europeans were making in this direction. By 1838, due to the efforts of James Carter (1795-1849) and Horace Mann (179 6-1859), and because of the generosity of a Boston merchant, the Massachusetts legislature was …

Outlines: An Original Composition For Concert Band, Bruce Albert Stephenson Hunter

All Master's Theses

If one attempted to study the history of jazz through the study of music playable by and available to the average high school band, he might conclude that jazz was a frivolous medium which died in the late 1940's. Outlines was composed in the hope that future high school musicians will develop a more balanced view of music trends in the last half of the century.

Parody As The Ironic Mode Of Existential Art, Delma Ward Tayer Jan 1970

Parody As The Ironic Mode Of Existential Art, Delma Ward Tayer

All Master's Theses

This study was commenced as an investigation into the aesthetics of existentialism as applied to contemporary art in America, particularly painting. This student believes that to the artist who recognizes the absurdity of his existence, irony is the natural mode of expression. It is also the belief of this student that the form of irony in recent American art, expressed primarily in parody and black humor, indicates America’s own particular brand of cheerful nihilism. The purpose was to better understand the aesthetics of existentialism, to apply these to contemporary art, and finally to apply these influences to the student’s own …
