Visions Infernales by the French composer Henri Sauguet is a song cycle for the bass voice with piano accompaniment set to a text by the twentieth-century poet, }fax Jacob. This composition, published in France in 1950, is contemporary in style with considerable dissonance, and therefore is probably not well known in this country. However, student and professional should become more familiar with the style characteristics and performance of modern repertoire.

The Introduction Of Asian History Into Utah High Schools, Carol M. Hinckley

Theses and Dissertations

Asian history is increasingly recognized by experts as a necessary part of a high school student's world history experience. Asia is important for them to study because of its great intrinsic value and because of Asia's relationship with the United States in the future. To date, however, in Utah there are no separate Asian history courses being taught and few teachers include Asia as an important part of the world history course.

Schools in other parts of the nation have instituted practical Asian history courses and Utah can follow their example. Teachers should consider how much time can be devoted …

Graduate Recital, Robert S. Frost

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The acquisition of new skills and the further development of previous skills has always been one of the ideas behind the graduate recital. Along with new skills come the knowledge and experience necessary to affect the individual's own performance and the performance of those whom he teaches . In music education it is difficult to teach that which one has not yet experienced or mastered and the graduate recital helps to fulfill the experience requirement and give new insights into understanding all aspects of music as a listener, performer, and teacher.

The graduate recital traditionally draws its literature from all …

Carl L. Becker: A Philosophical Analysis, Reed Anderson Olsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In any study of American historiography, Car.l Becker emerges as one of the more prominent historical philosophers. George H. Sabine suggests that interest in Becker's historical writing stems from three main characteristics. First, far more than most academic historians, he was a literary artist, using a very fine prose style which made enjoyable reading. Second, he had an unique understanding of the purposes which should guide and might set the standard of excellence in historical writing. Third, Becker had a broad and keen intellectual curiosity, enlightened by wit and irony and united with a deep moral conviction of the seriousness …

In the administration of justice in the Territory of Utah the United States marshal served an important role, especially because of the conflict between Mormons and non-Mormons. While the first United States marshal in Utah was Mormon, all others were non-Mormon and most were recruited from outside the territory. In general, they were capable …

A History Of Westminster College Of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1875-1969, Lewis G. Webster

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As the railroad and mining industries brought non-Mormon settlers into the territory of Utah, a conflict developed which led to the creation of a separate system of education by the Protestant newcomers. Their purposes were to provide a quality education for their own children free from Mormon influence and to convert children of Mormon families. The Presbyterian Church led in the creation of graded schools from elementary, through secondary, and culminating in the Sheldon Jackson College in Salt Lake City.

As public schools were established, the mission schools were closed, except for Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant and Sheldon Jackson …

The History Of Cokeville, Wyoming, Errol Jack Lloyd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cokeville, Wyoming, is situated at the confluence of the Bear River and Smiths Fork valleys in southwestern Wyoming. Settled in 1874, the Cokeville area has experienced much the same political, economic, and social developments typical of other small rural towns in the western United States; but it is unlike neighboring settlements in that it was not dominated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during its early growth.

Depending upon an agricultural economic base, Cokeville has been the center of the Lincoln County sheep industry since the early 1900's. Mining has played a minor part in the economy, …

Lot Smith helped build much of Utah and Arizona history.

This thesis places emphasis on the following phases of his life: The Mormon Battalion, The Utah War, The Civil War, and The Arizona Mission. Lot was mainly a soldier, but he was also a missionary, farmer and statesman whose whole way …

The Schleswig-Holstein Question And Anglo-German Relations: March 1848, To July, 1849., Wendell Holmes Cook Jr.

History ETDs

The Schleswig-Holstein Question has rightly been called one of the most complicated questions in European history. It dates from the Middle Ages and for many centuries was nothing more than a continuing dynastic quarrel between the royal families of Denmark. In the nineteenth century, however, it became involved with the forces of liberalism and nationalism and ultimately with the revolutions of 1848-49, and the fate of German unification. In March of 1848, revolutions broke out more or less simultaneously in Germany, Denmark, and the duchies. The Danish revolutionaries planned to annex the duchy of Schleswig. To prevent this, the ducal …

Fictional Manifestations Of Multiple Personality In Selected Works Of Miguel De Unamuno, Jerry L. Benbow

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study, which grew out of an interest in the recurrent theme of multiple personality in the prose of Miguel de Unamuno, first attempts to define multiple personality in the scientific fields of psychology and psychiatry, subsequently examines depictions of multiple personality in world literature, and finally studies in depth the manifestations of the phenomenon in selected works of Unamuno. Multiple personality in psychology and psychiatry is defined beginning with an examination of the behavioristic, mechanistic-adjustive, and holistic-dynamic approaches to personality theory. Attention is then given to the contributions of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler to personality theory. …

Henry David Thoreau's Interest In Myth, Fable And Legend, Richard Francis Fleck Apr 1970

Henry David Thoreau's Interest In Myth, Fable And Legend, Richard Francis Fleck

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study, I believe, has shown a number of things about Thoreau as a folklorist which have not been seen before. He was America's first comprehensive folklorist not only in terms of collecting vast amounts of folktales, folkpoems, legends and myths but also in terms of theorizing on the formation of folklore. Thoreau made literary use of his folklore knowledge by creating pieces imitative of anonymous folklore as well as by couching his style with indigenous and European mythological and legendary allusions. While some critics have discussed Thoreau's collecting of folklore in his published writings and his attempts at imitation …

Italy 1830-1848: The Role Of The Press And The Theatre In The Formation Of The National Spirit, Albert Louis Cereghino

Dissertations and Theses

The research problem in Part I, the Press, concerns the question as to whether the Italian journals, 1830-1848, were efficacious in the formation of the Italian national spirit to the degree postulated by Professor Kent Roberts Greenfield in his thesis: Economics and Liberalism in the Risorgimento, Part II "Thought and Action," subtitled "National Journalism, 1818-1848," (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1965). Specifically, this problem involves ascertaining: (1) who read the journals; (2 whether the contents of these journals were of interest to a significant portion of the population of the eight states; and (3) whether the journals were disseminated to any …

German Policy Toward Neutral Spain In World War I 1914-1918, R. M. Carden Apr 1970

German Policy Toward Neutral Spain In World War I 1914-1918, R. M. Carden

History ETDs

This paper presents a description and analysis of German diplomatic policy toward Spain during the First World War. In four stages, from August 1914 through October 1918, Berlin used adroit diplomacy and an effective propaganda network to encourage Spain to remain neutral. Conservative Spanish politicians, including King Alfonso XIII, feared that participation in the war would unsettle Spain’s domestic political structure and, therefore, wanted to remain outside of the maelstrom. Nevertheless, the King used the world crisis to further his aim of returning Spain to the status of a Great Power; Germany encouraged the King’s dreams.

The four stages of …
