Colores In Cicero's Philippics I And Ii, And In Pliny's Panegyricus, Marilyn Jacke Smart Jun 1970

Colores In Cicero's Philippics I And Ii, And In Pliny's Panegyricus, Marilyn Jacke Smart

Master's Theses

Color, as a figure of speech, is a small part of the art of rhetoric. The various definitions and uses of color in a selection of ancient writers form the subject of this thesis. The purpose is to present examples of col'o'r'es found in· Philippics I and II of Cicero, and in the·Panegyricus of Pliny the Younger. These examples will be correlated to the demands of the situation of each speaker. Cicero's speeches represent free oratory during the period of the late Republic; Pliny's speech represents epideictic oratory during the Empire. The first chapter of this thesis will serve as …

Proudhonism And The French Working Class, Joan Batten Wood Jun 1970

Proudhonism And The French Working Class, Joan Batten Wood

Master's Theses

Conquering causes and dominant trends attract the attention of many historians while unsuccessful movements are neglected or forgotten. Such is unfortunate in the extreme, for these vanquished ideas are often but submerged in the prevailing trends to emerge in the shape of subtle, formative influences on human psychology and the structuring of society. As socialist thought and movements developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century, two diverging currents were readily distinguishable. One, evolving from the teachings of Karl Marx, moved toward increasing centralization and authoritarianism and has become associated in the public mind with the emergence of the …

The "Black Laws" Of Oregon, Franz M. Schneider Jun 1970

The "Black Laws" Of Oregon, Franz M. Schneider

History Master's Theses

For a state whose Negro population has always been tiny, Oregon has devoted a surprising amount of political energy to the question of what the status of Negroes in the state and nation should be. The actions and arguments of its legislative bodies have more or less followed the national patterns, reflecting the ebb and flow of the United States' concern as a whole with Negroes' place in this society. Before the Civil War, and again during Reconstruction, whites in Oregon were preoccupied with the "Negro Problem," as was the rest of the country. During the establishment of the system …

The Outbreak Of The Ridda And The Campaign Of KhāLid B. Al-WalīD In Central Arabia, James F Gould

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The period immediately following the death of Muhammad was a crucial time in the development of the Islamic state. For the first year or more the Muslims were involved in the quelling of revolts and the extending of their control over the Arabian Peninsula. The ridda, as the Arab historians term this period, is extremely important for the understanding of the growth of Islam. In the military campaigns which were waged at this time the Arab armies were prepare for the Conquest which was to come. All of Arabia was united, as it had not been in the time of …

Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim May 1970

Stephen's Speech Missiological Implications Of Stephen's Speech In Luke-Acts, Hyo-Jong Kim

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Stephen's speech leaves us with many questions. Our study will help to answer some of these questions. Chapter One of this study deals with some background issues, i.e., Who Stephen is among the Seven Deacons, and Who the Hellenists are, whose complaint threatened the unity and harmony of the church in Jerusalem. Chapter Two seeks to determine how the reporting of speech in ancient literature is to be understood. This is an attempt to defend the authenticity, and thus, the reliability of the ancient records of various speeches. The third chapter, the main body of the work, handles the issues …

A Constructive Critique Of The Foundations Of Philosophy, Ramesh Nath Patel May 1970

A Constructive Critique Of The Foundations Of Philosophy, Ramesh Nath Patel

Philosophy ETDs

Philosophy pursues a rational explication of our understanding, experiences, and values in terms of objective truth and reality. Conspicuously, its view of rationality has been rigid and preconceived. Application of this preconceived reason in the explication of the essential features of our world fails and issues in a network of dialectical tangles. These artificially created tangles pose a unique intellectual challenge, but the perennial failure to resolve them limits the intellectual response of philosophers to remaining caught in the tangles, or to taking intuitively favorable sides, or to simply denouncing the tangles as meaningless. Each is understandable.

Superficially, traditional philosophical …

Masking And Disguise In The Plays Of Etherege, Wycherley, And Cosgreve., John Ellison Carroll May 1970

Masking And Disguise In The Plays Of Etherege, Wycherley, And Cosgreve., John Ellison Carroll

English Language and Literature ETDs

Masks and disguises permeate the plays of Etherege, Wycherley, and Congreve. Previous studies of these elements have not considered some of their more significant literary and theatrical uses. Indeed, the mask is usually dismissed as a social phenomenon of the Restoration. However, like material disguise, the mask provides the plays with spectacle and serves numerous other dramaturgic functions--structural, thematic, symbolic, and satiric. A detailed study of the uses of these devices can increase the reader's or spectator's understanding of the three dramatists' plays.

The Consistency Of John Dryden's Literary Criticism In Theory And Practice., Elmer Joseph Cole Jr. May 1970

The Consistency Of John Dryden's Literary Criticism In Theory And Practice., Elmer Joseph Cole Jr.

English Language and Literature ETDs

While many studies have investigated relationships between aspects of John Dry den's literary theory and his practice as a poet, and others have examined specific problems in his literary theory, there have been no significant attempts to analyze his practical criticism as a means of determining the theoretical foundations of his criticism. This study attempts to determine the relationships between Dryden's practical criticism and his general statements of literary theory.

Dryden's criticism emphasizes the dual ends of instruction and delight as the principal function of literature. He uses this principle in close conjunction with the concept of the imitation of …

Cattle Ranching In Territorial New Mexico, Gerald Robert Baydo May 1970

Cattle Ranching In Territorial New Mexico, Gerald Robert Baydo

History ETDs

This study deals with the rise and fall of the open range period in New Mexico Territory from 1865 to 1900. Its purpose is to examine one section of the range country that has been left untouched by historians of the West. Since there has been a definite lack of ranch records and personal papers in New Mexico, county records, newspapers, diaries, and other primary material make up the burden of the research. This investigation reveals that New Mexico Territory rose and fell like the great cattle kingdoms of Texas and Montana; yet New Mexico Territory was also unique, since …

To Oregon In 1843:The Backgrounds And Organization Of The "Great Migration.", Michael B. Husband

History ETDs

The "Great Migration" of 1843, an event which initiated the distinctly American period in the history of the Pacific Northwest, was a complex westward movement involving numerous motivations, various organizational problems and some highly significant results. This study is concerned with an examination of the motives for migration in 1843, the effects of the migration on Anglo-American relations and on the Oregon Treaty of 1846, and the impact of the Oregon propagandists, including the Protestant missionaries in the Oregon Country, on the pioneer mind. Other areas of emphasis include the organization of the Oregon emigrating company, a study of the …

Matter And Spirit In Santayana's Realms Of Being, Anton Lissy May 1970

Matter And Spirit In Santayana's Realms Of Being, Anton Lissy

Philosophy ETDs

In Scepticism and Animal Faith, the introductory volume of George Santayana's Realms of Being, Santayana claimed that his system of philosophy would place the common sense of ordinary life into a "more accurate and circumspect form" by distinguishing realms or categories of being which he personally found "conspicuously different and worth distinguishing." He also declared that the "chief issue" of philosophy was to investigate "the relation of man and of his spirit to the universe." Paul Schilpp, in an article on the final volume of the Realms of Being, concluded that Santayana was "groping" in print. Schilpp added, however, that …

The Organic Unity Of Henry David Thoreau's A Week On The Concord And Merrimack Rivers., Gail Baker May 1970

The Organic Unity Of Henry David Thoreau's A Week On The Concord And Merrimack Rivers., Gail Baker

English Language and Literature ETDs

Most scholars have failed to consider Henry David Thoreau’s A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers as a unified work of art. Rather they have dismissed it as a weak first book, lacking the depth of thought and artistry of Walden. This study attempts to analyze the kind of book A Week is and to show that its organic unity develops from Thoreau’s belief in the independence of man and nature.

From Drama To Novel: A Study Of Fielding's Development., Connie Capers May 1970

From Drama To Novel: A Study Of Fielding's Development., Connie Capers

English Language and Literature ETDs

Many critics have noted the influence that Henry Fielding's years as a dramatist had on his career as a writer of prose fiction. However, none of these critics has attempted any detailed analysis of that influence. This dissertation will discuss the influence by examining in detail the narrator; the burlesque of form, fable, and language; the comical and farcical elements of the dramatized scenes; and marriage as a satiric object in the plays and prose fiction. Each had its beginnings in the plays, and each finds its way into the prose fiction. My hypothesis is that Fielding's prose fiction shows …

British Travelers Among The Southern Indians, 1660-1763, J. Ralph Randolph May 1970

British Travelers Among The Southern Indians, 1660-1763, J. Ralph Randolph

History ETDs

The subject of this study is the reactions and observations of British travelers who between 1660 and 1763 visited the American Indians located between the Ohio River and Spanish Florida and the Atlantic coast and the Mississippi River, It examines the reasons for the trips, the socio-economic backgrounds of the men, the tribes visited, and the quality and quantity of the Whites' comments.

The nearly fifty British subjects who are known to have traveled among the Southern Indians were diverse. Only about one-third of them made journeys specifically to visit native Americans, Slightly fewer than half of the Whites encountered …

Die Gestalt Der Frau In Ausgewählten Dramen George Kaisers, Wolfgang H. Justen May 1970

Die Gestalt Der Frau In Ausgewählten Dramen George Kaisers, Wolfgang H. Justen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis' focuses on the characterization of the "woman", who occupies a very prominent part in the dramatic works of playwright Georg Kaiser (1878-1945). The purpose of this study is twofold: the first part re-examines the early plays Die judische Witwe (1910) and Europa (1910) and basically re-affirms the findings that Judith and Europa are "elementary beings", driven by only one force, their overpowering sexual desire. It can be pointed out, though, that already in these plays Kaiser turned toward mythology - which includes Old and New Testament for him - in the choice of his protagonists.

The examination of …

Die Gestaltung Des Raumes In Den Dramen Ernst Barlachs, Dieter Helmut Engelhardt May 1970

Die Gestaltung Des Raumes In Den Dramen Ernst Barlachs, Dieter Helmut Engelhardt

Dissertations and Theses

The importance of spatial spheres in dramas has only slightly been researched. On the whole this problem has been considered relatively unimportant. Ever since the publication of Lessing's Laokoon the distinguishing characteristic of a literary work was considered to be the element of "time", in contradistinction to works of the visual arts (painting and sculpture) where "space" was primary. It will be demonstrated that in Barlach's plays space assumes considerable importance. Although the dramatic concern is primarily expressed through successive dialogues and monologues, Barlach's language nevertheless can imaginatively create spatial spheres different from those visible on stage. Both spheres of …

Art At The "Mexican Front": Robert Henri, George Wesley Bellows And Leon Kroll In New Mexico, 1916-1922, Denise Catherine Melnick May 1970

Art At The "Mexican Front": Robert Henri, George Wesley Bellows And Leon Kroll In New Mexico, 1916-1922, Denise Catherine Melnick

Art & Art History ETDs

In the decade following the Armory Show of 1913, New York City lost its appeal for many painters. Disillusioned by the rivalry between various artists’ groups, the attitude of a smug public and prevented from visiting Europe by the outbreak of the First World War, many artists migrated from New York to explore various regions of the United States in order to find new and stimulating subjects to paint. A number of New York artists, attracted by the landscape, the colorful Indian and Mexican population and the democratic exhibition policies of the museum of New Mexico, visited the art colonies …

The Rise And Fall Of The Pius Ix Myth, Fr. Victor Garuti May 1970

The Rise And Fall Of The Pius Ix Myth, Fr. Victor Garuti

History ETDs

Eighteen forty-eight at its opening gave to many Italian patriots the hope that the time had at last come when Italy would be united under the leadership of Pope Pius IX. But very soon the dream was killed. The year indeed began with revolutions in Sicily and in all of Europe; Pope Pius IX was faced with demands, both liberal and nationalist, much beyond what he was prepared to grant. On March 14 he was compelled to grant a constitution. When, on March 23, Charles Albert of Sardinia declared war on Austria, Pius tried to steer a middle course; however, …

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson May 1970

Life Drawing In The Secondary Classroom, Marilyn Jean Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Life drawing presents some of the most difficult problems in the school art program: the difficulty of securing models, the necessity of using only the clothed model, and the resistance of many students to this particular discipline. The students' confidence in their own drawing abilities is at its nadir during early adolescence, and they become easily discouraged when faced with a live model as a subject. This thesis represents an effort to deal with these problems in a manner suited to the age and maturity level of the students. In order to build their self confidence, basic drawing skills and …

A Study Of Spanish Colonial Silver In New Mexico, Leona Davis Boylan May 1970

A Study Of Spanish Colonial Silver In New Mexico, Leona Davis Boylan

Art & Art History ETDs

This study has two purposes. First, to isolate and characterize a distinctive "Northern Provincial" style of Spanish Colonial silver associated with the southwestern part of the United States. Second, to describe and classify 329 articles in five museum collections: the Sylvanus Griswold Morley Collection, the International Business Machines Collection, the Mrs. Henry Lyman Collection, the Museum of New Mexico Collection (all in the latter Santa Fe institution) and the Mary Lester Field Collection in the University Art Museum, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
