The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez Oct 1970

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez

History ETDs

This is a study of the emergence of military hegemony in twentieth century Cuba, The contours of the Republic's history offers a sharply defined periodization within which to study army ascendancy. More specifically, the island entered nationhood without an army; within little more than three decades, the military institution exercised unchallenged national authority. Thirty years later the armed forces collapsed.

The Cuban army emerged initially as a military response to the problem of political instability. In the course of two armed interventions (1898-1902 and 1906-1909), United States military and political administrators saw in the Cuban armed forces an effective agency …

Plato's Polemic Against Poetry As Paideia, Howard Trusch Sep 1970

Plato's Polemic Against Poetry As Paideia, Howard Trusch

Philosophy ETDs

Plato, supposedly the father of Western philosophy, has often been presented by certain academicians in an unfavorable light. Although philosophers for the past twenty-five centuries have been writing commentaries about problems that were initially raised by Plato, something of a caricature of the man has been created. For Plato, although acknowledged as a literary genius for immortalizing Socrates, has also been ridiculed for making what seemed to be foolish remarks about the Greek poets and their poetry. His remarks about poetry, namely, that it is simply imitation, presenting only images and changing appearances and representing opinion and not knowledge, have …

In Search Of Union: Amos A. Lawrence And The Coming Of The Cival War., Barry A. Crouch Aug 1970

In Search Of Union: Amos A. Lawrence And The Coming Of The Cival War., Barry A. Crouch

History ETDs

Amos A. Lawrence (1814-1886) was a Boston, Massachusetts, textile tycoon, philanthropist, and humanitarian. His father, Amos Lawrence, began the Lawrence textile dynasty just after the turn of the nineteenth century. After graduating from Harvard College in 1835, his son eventually took over part of his father's holdings and also established his own cotton mills and factories. The young Lawrence did not immediately go into business, simply because it took some time for him to find his station in life. In the early 1840's his marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Appleton seemed to crystallize his attitude toward himself and his position in …

Jorge Icaza Y Su CreacióN Literaria, Jorge Neptalí AlarcóN Aug 1970

Jorge Icaza Y Su CreacióN Literaria, Jorge Neptalí AlarcóN

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Ecuador is known in the world of letters for more than one writer of continental renown, among them being José Joaquín Olmedo, Juan León Mera, Juan Montalvo, Jorge Carrera Andrade, Alfredo Pareja Diez-Canseco, and Jorge Icaza. Critics, in general, have rated the last as the greatest of the indigenist writers of Ecuador as well as one of the most outstanding novelists of the Indian theme in all of Hispanic America. Nevertheless, the literary activity of this Ecuadorian writer is not restricted exclusively to the novel as a genre, nor to the Indian as theme. Theater, short story and novel constitute …

The Loyalist Press In The American Revolution, 1765-1781., Timothy M. Barnes Aug 1970

The Loyalist Press In The American Revolution, 1765-1781., Timothy M. Barnes

History ETDs

This dissertation has sought an answer to what American Loyalists precisely thought about the major issues of the Revolution. The most comprehensive statement of Loyalist thinking on the issues of the Revolution is to be found in their newspapers between 1765 and 1781. A systematic examination of all Loyalist newspapers during the years of controversy and war indicates: the revolutionary issues the Loyalists considered most important, the strengths and weaknesses of this minority press; and that the Loyalists were not unthinking, narrow reactionaries, but held ideas that spanned a wide spectrum on the problems of the Revolution.

The chapter organization …

The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest Aug 1970

The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest

History ETDs

In the sixty years which have elapsed since the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, the causes for that great upheaval have been blurred by both time and misleading interpretations. The lists of grievances against the Diaz government are not fully applicable as either reasons for the revolution or causes for its ultimate success. Equally misunderstood is the position of the two chief characters in this drama. The old dictator has been overvillified by generations seeking to justify both his rejection and the terrible price which the nation ultimately paid for the revolution. Similarly, Francisco Madero has been exalted to a …

The Creative Conflict: Struggle And Escape In Jack London's Fiction, Ronald Gower Aug 1970

The Creative Conflict: Struggle And Escape In Jack London's Fiction, Ronald Gower

English Language and Literature ETDs

The primary purpose of this study is to consider the concept of struggle, of life as battle, in Jack London's work. Criticism in the past has focused on the man himself, his era, or the intellectual milieu in which he lived; yet none of these approaches, by itself, has fully explained the attraction of London's fiction. Yet all do suggest that the insistent theme in his work is that view of life as conflict, and it would seem to be this concept that gives his writing its vitality and dramatic appeal. There seem to be three distinct phases to this …

Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards Aug 1970

Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards

Art & Art History ETDs

Continuing since its eminence in the High Renaissance during the Fifteenth Century in Europe, representation had been the predominant mode of painting until the early decades of the Twentieth Century. This form also has firm foundations in America's artistic heritage. The progress and momentum of realistic painting, however, was to a large extent eclipsed during the late 1940's and 1950's by non-objective painting, particularly Abstract Expressionism. Unexpectedly the recent decade has seen numerous artists who have shown a renewed interest in representation as a basis for painting.

This study surveys the productions of these painters, probinR into their artistic ambitions, …

A History Of United States Naval Operations During 1861, Mitchell Stephen Goldberg Aug 1970

A History Of United States Naval Operations During 1861, Mitchell Stephen Goldberg

History ETDs

The role of the United States Navy in the Civil War has been the subject of many books for over one hundred years. Authors writing in the last century lacked many of the papers, diaries and other personal accounts which have since come to light. Also, many wrote with a distinct Northern bias and lacked objectivity. Towards the end of the last century, works appeared covering the entire history of the United States Navy and therefore devoted insufficient space on the Civil War. During the twentieth century, many books have been published dealing with particular aspects of the Navy during …

A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton Aug 1970

A Study Of Mignon's Lied In Selected Settings, Robert E. Norton

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study is the various treatments given by composers to a twelve line poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The text is the common factor over which the differences of approach and treatment are laid by composers in compositions which range in time of initial publication from 1796 to 1888. The condition of the Lied immediately prior to the publication of the first of the settings is taken as the starting point, since all of the chosen settings may be classified as Lieder. The composers whose works are discussed are Karl F. Zelter, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz …

Alejo Carpentier : CivilizacióN Y Barbarie, MaríA Luisa P. ValdéS Aug 1970

Alejo Carpentier : CivilizacióN Y Barbarie, MaríA Luisa P. ValdéS

Master's Theses

Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody Aug 1970

Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody

Master's Theses

This paper attempts to explore one relatively small phenomenon of language. Linguistics is what might be thought of as a discipline in its infancy. Men have studied language for thousands of years: Dionysius Thrax of Alexandria codified the grammar of Greek in the second century B.C. But it has been only in the last thirty to forty years that scholars have studied language as it is spoken, as the living tool for symbolization that more than anything else distinguishes man from the lower animals. Linguists try to describe and to explain language, not to prescribe how it should be used. …

The Justification Of Jehan Petit: A Fifteenth-Century Attempt To Justify Tyrannicide, John C. Parsons Aug 1970

The Justification Of Jehan Petit: A Fifteenth-Century Attempt To Justify Tyrannicide, John C. Parsons

Masters Theses

The Justification of Jehan Petit was composed as an attempt to explain the murder in 1407 of Louis, duke of Orleans, by his cousin John the Fearless, duke of Burgundy. The murder was politically necessary for John to be able to dominate the French government while the king, Charles VI, was mad.

Petit attempted to prove that the duke of Orleans had been a tyrant, and that the murder was justifiable as tyrannicide. The validity of Petit’s theory demanded that he be able to prove Louis' tyranny. In so doing, he departed radically from the medieval concept of a tyrant …

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong Aug 1970

Jewish And Historical Background To 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Offiong Udo Idiong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The eschatology of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 has been a perennial problem for biblical interpreters. The language of the chapter is very different from that which Paul uses in his other epistles. He exhorts the Thessalonians not to be excited about the coming of the day of the Lord, "for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed …" (verse 3). When the appears, he will exalt himself "against every so-called god or object of worship, so that be takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God" …

Experiments In The Decorative Process Of Salt-Glazing, James A. Thornsbury

All Master's Theses

It is the purpose of this study to explore the process of salt-glazing and to develop a representative range of colored salt glazes by the application of soluble and insoluble metallic salts to the surface of the clay bodies. Varying percentages of clay forming constituents and metallic salts were tested to determine their effects on the range and characteristics of the colors obtained, and the ability of the clay body to take a salt-glaze. Firing techniques, kiln atmosphere control, and salting procedures were studied to determine their effects on the color of both clay and glaze, the ability of the …
