Julio Cortazar, Clarice Lispector E A Nova Narrativa Latino-Americana, Teresinha Alves Pereira Martins

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study 1s divided into three parts. The first is over the ne Latin American narrative, which involves identifying magic realism as a vanguard movement, using as examples the works of two authors who present characteristics of magic realism, Julio Cortázar from Argentina and Clarice Lispector from Brazil.

The second part considers the expression "magic realism" as the denomination of a new literary movement, the historical conceptualization of the term and its use by the critics to characterize the works of the two authors studied.

"Realia" Dans Le Perceval De Chretien De Troyes, Claude Jean Fouillade May 1971

"Realia" Dans Le Perceval De Chretien De Troyes, Claude Jean Fouillade

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study assesses the relationship between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the United States Army during the calendar years 1937-1940 and the appropriations for the War Department for military activities for fiscal years 1937-1941. The approach is made primarily through a study of the formulation of the annual estimates by the War Department, the action thereon by the Bureau of the Budget, and the course of the appropriation bills through Congress. The study relies on the official correspondence files of the War Department in the National Archives, the manuscript collections of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, and official publications of …

Gabriel Celaya: Peregrinación Metafísica A Traves De Su Prosa, Frank Everette Rosemond May 1971

Gabriel Celaya: Peregrinación Metafísica A Traves De Su Prosa, Frank Everette Rosemond

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Through his prose Gabriel Celaya expounds his very personal philosophy that lies within his entire literary production. Called "the social poet" whose verses pretend to tell "things as they are," this author, rooted in the intellectual tradition, is considered one of the outstanding spokesmen of the so-called "Here and Now."

The social aspect of his work has its roots in a dialectic that stems from the ideas of Nietzsche, the "be-with" of Heidegger, and a profound knowledge of the Oriental world. All of this provides the author with a personal vitalism that comes to the surface in his writings as …

Four Indian Tribes In Texas 1758-1858: A Reevaluation Of Historical Sources, James Curtis Hasdorff May 1971

Four Indian Tribes In Texas 1758-1858: A Reevaluation Of Historical Sources, James Curtis Hasdorff

History ETDs

From the early sixteenth century to the last half of the nineteenth century, a considerable portion of Texas history centered about Indian-white relations. However, the most significant era, in this respect, was the period from approximately the middle of the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Not only did the aborigines find their dominance in numbers slowly erode during this one hundred-year span, but also they found themselves eventually dispossessed of their native habitat. This work attempts to examine closely some of the early records to determine why the Texas Indians were destined to banishment and, in some cases, extinction. The …

The Problem Of Values And Jean-Paul Sartre's Existential Psychoanalysis, Stephen Portman May 1971

The Problem Of Values And Jean-Paul Sartre's Existential Psychoanalysis, Stephen Portman

Philosophy ETDs

Many contemporary critics of ethics have failed to consider Jean-Paul Sartre's Existential Philosophy as capable of yielding a normative value theory. Existential Philosophy in general has been accused of lacking any ground for distinguishing between the worth of one project over the worth of another. Most critics of contemporary psychoanalysis have failed to consider Jean-Paul Sartre's Existential Psychoanalysis as capable of supporting therapeutic recommendation. Sartre's Existential Psychoanalysis has been accused of lacking any ground for traditional therapy. This study attempts to show exactly how these two problems are related. It offers a solution to both.

An analysis of Being and …

The Shifting Voice;A Study Of Robert Lowell's Poetry., Myrna Bouchey May 1971

The Shifting Voice;A Study Of Robert Lowell's Poetry., Myrna Bouchey

English Language and Literature ETDs

This; study traces the development of Robert Lowell's poetic mc1thod from Lord Weary' s Castle through Notebook 1968-69, exclusive of Lowell's translations. Through descriptive analysis, the study pays particular attention to Lowell's alteration of style as he proceeds from book to book, carrying with him the same general themes, but using a variety of voices which reflect his shifts in focus. A major portion of each chapter examines distinguishing stylistic devices that either remain constant in his poetry or undergo major modifications through his experiments with form and voice.

BúSqueda De La Identidad En La ExpresióN LíRica De Los PaíSes De Habla EspañOla, María Esther Serra Carossino May 1971

BúSqueda De La Identidad En La ExpresióN LíRica De Los PaíSes De Habla EspañOla, María Esther Serra Carossino

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This essay is based on the premise that there exists a general orderly pattern of innermost values constantly present throughout time and events.

The atomic world had the same architectural structure as the Universe, but the molecular interactions form the different substances which have properties characteristic of their own. Under a similar pattern, the writer found a universal harmony in the Spanish lyrical expression, which shows itself in valid and fruitful relationships. She searched for similarities in the poetic world by analyzing what other writers have taken from tradition and then developed into an entirely new production, resulting from the …

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt May 1971

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt

English Language and Literature ETDs

Much contemporary criticism tends to judge and interpret theater on preconceived grounds peculiar to the critic, rather than in terms of dramatic action--the play itself. In part, the critic who is responsible for clarifying the meaning of often perplexing, "open" forms of contemporary drama has been handed an impossible task, for the playwrights are apparently dedicated to a view of reality that doggedly refuses to follow a set, external pattern capable of resolution into easy meaning. An excellent example is Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, a play which has led critics to elaborate, subjective interpretations in their attempts to resolve its …

American Family Memorial Imagery, The Photograph, And The Search For Immortality, Daniel Gyger Snyder May 1971

American Family Memorial Imagery, The Photograph, And The Search For Immortality, Daniel Gyger Snyder

Art & Art History ETDs

In this dissertation I trace the development of family (as opposed to public) memorial imagery and note the unique contribution of photography. I examine attitudes toward photography during its early years. These attitudes reveal that the medium was uniquely appropriate for the continuation and extension of the tradition of memorial imagery in America.

I suggest that America holds expectations for the Machine and for the power of Science that have at various times (the mid-nineteenth century and today) led some to assume that death is not inevitable and that physical Immortality is possible. From Puritan times, when death was accepted, …

The Christology Of Martin Luther King, Jr., Kenneth Joseph Stumpf May 1971

The Christology Of Martin Luther King, Jr., Kenneth Joseph Stumpf

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis will examine whether King personally followed that challenge in his thought as well as deed and it will do so by centering the analysis on his understanding of the Christian faith's cornerstone-Jesus Christ. The study will commence by sketching the ecclesiastical and geographical background from which King emerged. Next will be a survey of the major intellectual influences upon his theological positions and personal faith. Only after this extensive but essential prologue will the thesis address itself directly to its chief task of analyzing his Christology with sections on the theistic nature of God, the incarnation of God …

The Holograph Ballads Of John Payne Collier From The Hall Commonplace Book, Folger Ms. V. A. 339, Eric J. C. Berryman

English Language and Literature ETDs

This is the first edition with an introduction, notes, and commentary of John Payne Collier's eighty-three holograph ballads in Folger MS. V. a. 339. Written between approximately 1843 and 1849, they were composed in imitation of ballads of the time of Elizabeth and James I. In the course of his lifetime, Collier published thirty-four of them either wholly or in part in his Extracts from the Registers of the Stationers' Company... 1557-1570 and, Vol. II, 1570-1587 (Shakespeare Society, 1848 and 1849). Eighteen others are included in his Twenty-five Old Ballads and Songs (privately printed, 1869). Interspersed among the fabrications …

Expanding The Visual Potential Of Subject Matter Through Two-Dimensional Design, William Paul Paxton May 1971

Expanding The Visual Potential Of Subject Matter Through Two-Dimensional Design, William Paul Paxton

Dissertations and Theses

This research problem represents an attempt to forestall the high school student's usual preoccupation with perceptive minutiae by placing an emphasis on the monumental or underlying structure of a work of art.

The author, endeavoring to afford maximum success for the students, first stripped subject matter to its most pristine quality, the silhouette. Because it was felt that it is much easier to recognize and organize an underlying structure without the added complication of perspective, emphasis was placed on a depthless surface or decorative space to be organized into a coherent whole through application of the abstractions which are the …

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave May 1971

François Pierre Guillaume Guizot: An Intellectual Approach, Elbert Hardy Cave

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of this study was to present an intellectual picture of a man who is too often written off as a mere politician and a failure at that.

In approaching the problem, his works were used heavily, though availability was a problem. François Guizot, the man studied, wrote profusely, on a large variety of subjects, including philosophy, religion, history, political theory, and education. All of these areas were covered in the study. His private papers and correspondence are, for the most part, unpublished, though the eight volumes of his Mémoires were extremely helpful.

There are many good biographical studies …

Differences In The Attitudes Of Church-Attending Catholics Toward Changes In Religious Beliefs And Practices Correlated With Age And Education, Cletus Michael Kirkpatrick May 1971

Differences In The Attitudes Of Church-Attending Catholics Toward Changes In Religious Beliefs And Practices Correlated With Age And Education, Cletus Michael Kirkpatrick

Dissertations and Theses

A field survey was conducted to investigate differences in attitudes toward religious changes in a population of church-going Roman Catholics. An attitude scale comprising twenty items referring to changes in the Catholic Church was prepared during pilot studies. Half of the items referred to changes already occurring, and half to proposed or possible future changes. The attitude scale was administered to a sample of parishes in the Roman Catholic diocese of Baker, Oregon. It was administered during regular Sunday services to take advantage of the saliency effect of group membership.

A response to an item of the scale indicating the …

Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider May 1971

Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to discover the nature of lowland Filipinos’ spirit-world beliefs, from the pre-Spanish era to the present, and to discover theological aspects in the responses or Roman Catholic churchmen to the spirit-world beliefs.

In serving as a Christian pastor to the lowland Filipinos from 1961 to 1970, the writer observed that some people felt spirit beings to be quite active in their lives. He also felt a lack of Christian resources, either Philippine or American, with which to minister to such people. This study was undertaken to determine what resources, if any, the Christian Church …

The Liturgy: The Context Of Worship In The Context Of Media, Richard Handschin May 1971

The Liturgy: The Context Of Worship In The Context Of Media, Richard Handschin

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is an attempt to gain perspective on the current disinterest in the organized church especially on the part of the young. To do this we intend to study the relationship between the worship of the church and the communication media, feeling that media are the fundamental fact in the development of social interaction.
