The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols Aug 1971

The Symbolist And Decadent Elements In The Lyrical Dramas Of Oscar Wilde, Nancy G. Nuckols

Master's Theses

The terms decadence, aestheticism, art for art's sake have been used interchangeably to describe the movement in literature that flowered during the 1890's in England. Despite the fact that the English aesthetics and decadents were a relatively small group, they were vocal and colorful. Many contributed to the numerous aesthetic and semi-aesthetic periodicals with such titles as The Chamelion, The Butter, The Rose Leaf, and The Hobby Horse. In this way the decadents presented the new trends in art and literature to the general public. In London during the 1890's the literacy taverns were full of these decadent artists who …

The Transcription Of Piece Heroique For Wind-Band, Douglas Frazier Cairns Aug 1971

The Transcription Of Piece Heroique For Wind-Band, Douglas Frazier Cairns

All Master's Theses

Wind ensemble performers have had to rely on transcribed music for their repertoire since the earliest days of the eleventh century. The situation showed little change through the nineteenth century as composers of the stature of Cesar A. Franck continued to demonstrate their disregard for the medium. However, the advent of the public school band has provided the economic stimulus necessary to attract the efforts of major modern composers. Though this trend satisfies the need for contemporary wind-band music, transcriptions continue to serve as a major means of teaching music history. The transcription of Piece Heroique for wind-band provides an …

Handel's Bass Solos In His Oratorios, Ronald E. Jones Aug 1971

Handel's Bass Solos In His Oratorios, Ronald E. Jones

All Master's Theses

Handel, recognized as a great Baroque composer, has had his vocal compositions performed by most serious singers. Many of these would agree that his compositions are, in general, very considerate of the singer and seldom vocally awkward. Since Handel wrote for all types of voices, most singers may find appropriate literature in his oratories. All singers should have some acquaintance with Handel's vocal compositions. Unfortunately, much of the present repertoire represents little of the bel canto techniques of the golden age of singing of which Handel was a part. This writer believes every serious vocal student should at least know …

The Tripolitan War, 1911-1912, John D. Lyon Jr. Aug 1971

The Tripolitan War, 1911-1912, John D. Lyon Jr.

All Master's Theses

This paper presents an analysis of the forces of the "new imperialism" that led Italy to war with Turkey in 1911-1912. The interests of the Powers of Europe and America in the area of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa are examined. The focal point is a resumé of the military aspects of the Tripolitan War. The concluding chapters deal with diplomatic reactions to Italy's conquest of Tripolitania and the judgment that Italy did not benefit from her imperial adventure.

A Use Of The Visual Metaphor: The Relationship Between The Figure To The Environment, Betty Anne Skalicky Aug 1971

A Use Of The Visual Metaphor: The Relationship Between The Figure To The Environment, Betty Anne Skalicky

All Master's Theses

In this study the human figure was used as a departure. I imposed my own style of drawing on the human form in order to achieve not only the illusion of a threedimensional quality, but to create a personal identification with the image on the part of the artist and the viewer.

I Made Some Prints, Teresa O. Tempero Aug 1971

I Made Some Prints, Teresa O. Tempero

All Master's Theses

In discussing the prints and drawings chosen for this study, I wish to consider mostly subject matter and composition, giving less mention to technique. The three forms of printmaking used are intaglio, collagraph, and woodcut. A specific theme was not chosen for these prints. Since printmaking has been such a relatively new experience of expression for me, I chose to concentrate this study on the printmaking process.

A Series Of Paintings Investigating Certain Specified Space Concepts, Michael C. Jackson Aug 1971

A Series Of Paintings Investigating Certain Specified Space Concepts, Michael C. Jackson

All Master's Theses

This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. A play or conflict was set up between these two things; the success of the play determined the success of the painting. The factors used to judge success are basically those classical rules of composition dealing with balance: visual weight of areas, complexity, and color. The only areas manipulated were: (1) shape of …

The Performance Interpretation Of Paul Creston's Six Preludes, Opus 38 For Piano, Ginger Anne Jensen Aug 1971

The Performance Interpretation Of Paul Creston's Six Preludes, Opus 38 For Piano, Ginger Anne Jensen

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of this study to help enable a pianist to make the best possible interpretation of the work for piano, Six Preludes, Opus JS by Paul Creston. The procedure used was (1) devising alternate melodic, rhythmic, and tempo interpretations and alternate ways of pedaling; (2) consultations with the composer, which included performing the work for him and questioning him concerning the alternate methods; and (3) finally deciding upon the composer's preferred interpretation for performance of the work.

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam Aug 1971

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam

Theses and Dissertations

In general, high school choruses do not reach their potential as far as choral tone is concerned. The tone is generally characterized by either a completely undisciplined and labored sound or a pseudo "mature" sound imposed upon the students by a director seeking to emulate his college choir.

When high school choruses sing freely and naturally, they do so because they are taught and inspired to do so by their director. Therefore, the director must understand the concepts of correct singing and must have in his possession practical techniques that will develop a program of correct singing in the high …

Henry Fielding's The Mock Doctor: Or The Dumb Lady Cur'd And The Miser: A Critical Edition, Marti J. Brewerton Aug 1971

Henry Fielding's The Mock Doctor: Or The Dumb Lady Cur'd And The Miser: A Critical Edition, Marti J. Brewerton

Theses and Dissertations

Henry Fielding is more widely known as a novelist than a playwright. Except for Tom Thumb, his dramatic works are largely ignored. And yet many of these plays enjoyed great success in Fielding's time. This edition presents a critical, old-style text of two of Fielding's most popular plays, both of which are adaptations of Molière: The Mock Doctor; or the Dumb Lady Cur'd, taken from Le Médecin Malgré Lui, and The Miser, taken from L'Avare. Each play is presented in the form which represents as nearly as possible Fielding's final intentions, so far as can be …

The Highly Personal Dispute Between Alexander Hamilton And Thomas Jefferson: The Confrontation Over Domestic Issues In Washngton's First Cabinet, Scott F. Hyland Aug 1971

The Highly Personal Dispute Between Alexander Hamilton And Thomas Jefferson: The Confrontation Over Domestic Issues In Washngton's First Cabinet, Scott F. Hyland

All Master's Theses

The intended result of this study is a presentation of the force of personality as the chief explanatory factor in the dispute between Hamilton and Jefferson, and as chief factor in Washington's role as unwilling catalyst. The boundaries will be the historical discipline, utilizing the more measurable psychological insights as given above. The result will hopefully be an insightful connection between personality, behavior, and history.

The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz Jul 1971

The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation is an investigation of the later, or art historical and aesthetic writings of James Jackson Jarves with the purpose of showing how Jares was the recipient of the colonial, Federalist and Jacksonian strains of aesthetic thinking of the United States, and how he combined these with contemporary European influences, especially Ruskin, Rio, Lindsay and Jameson to produce the first fully integrated documents on art by an American before American art and aesthetics became predominantly international in their concept and execution. An effort was made to trace the emergence and development of such canons of thought as idealism, pietism, …

In The Bricking Single Answer For All, No One Breathes. Or Ron Fabian Eats Shit For Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Supper, Dinner And In Between Meal Snacks........., Ron Fabian

Honors Theses

This is a self-centered, idiosyncratic wordblow. This paper is not an academic undertaking, it is more of a record of myself and my condition of being over the past two years. The paper is arranged chronologically from 1969 to the present and I have tried to combine philosophy and writing into making it a more understandable paper.

Backgrounds Of Mexican American Literature, Philip D. Ortego Jul 1971

Backgrounds Of Mexican American Literature, Philip D. Ortego

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study attempts to define the heretofore amorphous body of Mexican American literature as well as providing an understanding of what American literature should have been: that is, a literary fabric not exclusively woven on the Atlantic frontier by the descendants of New England Puritans and Southern Cavaliers, but one woven in the American Southwest as well, and with marvelous Hispanic threads which reach back not only to the literary heritage of the European continent but also the very heart of the Graeco-Roman world.

Like the British roots in the new American soil, the Hispanic literary roots have yielded a …

Paradise: The Failure Of An Ideal., Nancy C. Cotton Jul 1971

Paradise: The Failure Of An Ideal., Nancy C. Cotton

English Language and Literature ETDs

A lost paradise in man's mythic past has evoked traditionally a feeling of intense nostalgia. Yet in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, in Marvell's garden lyrics, in Gulliver's "Voyage to the Houyhnhnms," and in Rasselas, this elegiac sentiment is countered by a sense of boredom and dissatisfaction with the state of paradise. Partly by relating paradise and stoicism and partly through the means of parody and comedy, these works describe an impossible relationship between a life of reason, fulfillment, and harmony, and a human nature of unappeasable desires. Thus, there is a shift of concentration from the object of perception …

The Idea Of Evil In The Poetry Of Blake And Shelley:A Comparative Study., Melanie Flossie Bandy Jul 1971

The Idea Of Evil In The Poetry Of Blake And Shelley:A Comparative Study., Melanie Flossie Bandy

English Language and Literature ETDs

This analogical study attempts, through comparison, to define and elucidate Blake's and Shelley's ideas about the origin, manifestation and eradication of evil. Neither poet, for the most part, possesses a “tragic” view of evil, but it is the conclusion of the dissertation that the view they do have is nevertheless intellectually respectable and tenable. Blake defines evil as a "negative accident," a sin, error or mistake arising from suppressed energy. Shelley, however, accepted sane evils as absolute (the death, chance and mutability of Prometheus Unbound, for example), and his skepticism (based on reason) always kept up a running battle with …

History And Development Of National Park Legislation In Mexico 1917-1961, István György Maurer Jul 1971

History And Development Of National Park Legislation In Mexico 1917-1961, István György Maurer

History ETDs

The destruction of man's habitat is an age-old pattern as illustrated by examples from Asia, Africa and America. Equally old are attempts to save certain parts of the environment. The United States pioneered a new method in nature preservation with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Since that time national parks have become a worldwide phenomenon. Mexico, whose geography contains many areas of national park caliber, was an early participant in this movement. The grandeur of the Mexican landscape has been admired by travelers since Cortez. The country's climate and physiography combined to produce a variety of areas, …

The Common Service: A Study In The Adoption And Use Of The Common Service Between 1891 And 1941 In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod And The English Evangelical Lutheran Synod Of Missouri And Other States, Alvin Lange Jul 1971

The Common Service: A Study In The Adoption And Use Of The Common Service Between 1891 And 1941 In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod And The English Evangelical Lutheran Synod Of Missouri And Other States, Alvin Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study proposes to document how the Common Service came to be adopted first by the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri and Other States and then by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Missouri, Ohio and other States, and to show how extensive the use of this order has been between the years 1912, the date the first official English hymnal which included the Common Service was published by the Missouri Synod, and 1941, the year in which the 1940 revision of The Lutheran Hymnal was published.

The Southern Planter, 1841-1861, Frederick Francis Carr Jr. Jul 1971

The Southern Planter, 1841-1861, Frederick Francis Carr Jr.

Master's Theses

The Southern Planter, established in Richmond, Virginia, in 1841, was an influential agricultural journal in the years preceding the Civil War. It is now the oldest farm magazine still in continuous publication. In the years before the war there were several owners, editors, and publishers, with the attendant subscription and financial problems of a new editorial venture. Southern Planter grew in size and in influence and mirrored the agricultural changes of its region.

The Civil Rights Position Of Hugh D. Scott In Congress, 1941-1965, Michael Merle Fehl Jul 1971

The Civil Rights Position Of Hugh D. Scott In Congress, 1941-1965, Michael Merle Fehl

Master's Theses

This paper is a study of Pennsylvania's Senator Hugh Doggett Scott's position on civil rights as a member of the House of representatives (1941-1957) and the Senate (1958-1965). The purpose of this study is to show that Senator Scott throughout his House and Senate career played an active role in helping pass major civil rights legislation. The civil rights gain during this period of time are often credited only to liberal Democrats. However, Senator Scott and a few of his fellow Republicans also played an important role in seeing these gains come true.

The Christian Church (Disciples Of Christ) In Indiana: A Study Of The Churches And Their Leadership, James P. Johnson

Graduate Thesis Collection

This research project is a study of 227 Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in Indiana. These 227 churches were identified by the Regional Office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indiana as being fully cooperative with the work within the Region. The project was conducted in two parts or phases. Phase 1 was a study of the churches based upon statistical data which the churches reported to the Yearbook. Phase 2 was a study of the attitudes of selected leaders within these 227 churches. It should be noted in the beginning that this study does not tell the …

Expansion Systems In Drawing, Anna Jane Licka Jul 1971

Expansion Systems In Drawing, Anna Jane Licka

All Master's Theses

Drawing as a creative mode of expression has maintained in some artistic circles a "puristic doctrine." "Puristic doctrine" in this case means the utilization of characteristic drawing implements and techniques (ie. pen, pencil, ink, charcoal, crosshatching, shading). In contrast to this "puristic doctrine" is what can be termed an "eclectic expression" in art. As applied to drawing in this thesis, an "eclectic expression" will go beyond the traditional techniques by the application of other media such as photo-stencil, stuffed fabric, and three-dimensional tableau considerations. The purpose of this creative thesis is to expand the two-dimensional quality of drawing into a …
