A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian Jan 1972

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian

Theses and Dissertations

The American West prior to 1800 was relatively an obscure and unexplored region. However, by 1846, it had been traversed by no less than three government expeditions, and numerous mountain men and adventurers. There was an abundance of guides, maps, and books in print by 1846 for the homeseeker traveling west of the Mississippi River.

The Mormon knowledge and interest in the West began as early as 1832. Throughout the 1830's and early 1840's, as the saints moved West in the face of persecution, the Rocky Mountains were often spoken of as the future Zion of the Church. In 1842, …

A History Of The Schools And Educational Programs Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Ohio And Missouri, 1831-1839, Orlen Curtis Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a history of the schools and educational programs organized and maintained by the LDS Church while the saints resided in Ohio and Missouri between the years of 1831 and 1839. The instructors, curriculum, organizational structure, and the purpose of each school is given when information in these areas was available. In Kirtland, the Church organized the School of the Prophets, School of the Elders, Kirtland High School, Hebrew School, a singing school, a writing school, and a few grammar schools. The Church leaders in Missouri organized the Colesville school, a school in Independence, Far West School, and …

A Study Of Evidences Related To Lds Church History As Reflected In Volumes I Through Xiii Of The Journal Of Discourses, Paul C. Richards

Theses and Dissertations

How much historical information pertaining to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is contained in the Journal of Discourses? How and where can it be found amid the nearly ten thousand pages of printed matter, much of which is non-historical? How accurate is the historical information in the Journal of Discourses? These three questions pose the problem that this study is designed to handle.

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer Jan 1972

The Journey To Worship: A Case Study In Waterloo, Ontario, Douglas Craig Witmer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This paper examines religious spatial interaction within an urban environment and as such contributes to the sparse literature on the Geography of Religion. It is the specific purpose to illustrate the journey to worship of households in the City of Waterloo, Ontario and to explain the spatial pattern utilizing the Principle of Least Effort.

It is discovered that if historical tension and dimensional tension are considered, one is able to predict the actual pattern of the journey to worship with seventy per cent accuracy. The fact that a large per cent of the sample attend the closest church of their …

A Study Of Missionary Activity In The Diocese Of Athabasca, 1884-1903, George Michael Brandak Jan 1972

A Study Of Missionary Activity In The Diocese Of Athabasca, 1884-1903, George Michael Brandak

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The historical advantage the Roman Catholic Church held over its Anglican counterpart in the Athabasca region militated against the latter’s success. Owing to the dominant position established by the Oblates a generation prior to a resolute effort by the Church Missionary Society to evangelize the native population, the Anglicans were at a distinct disadvantage. Bishop Richard Young’s policies were shaped not by a master plan but rather by the necessity of having to react to the activities of the Catholics. Despite expansion, the Church of England was able to establish a firm base only in those areas which, initially, the …

Paradise Regained: An Intellectual Drama Of The Nature Of Being And Freedom, Michael Biehl Jan 1972

Paradise Regained: An Intellectual Drama Of The Nature Of Being And Freedom, Michael Biehl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The major problem confronting a student of Paradise Regained is to relate theology, philosophy, and drama. Critics, in the main, have either oversimplified the issues, or have given lopsided interpretations of the poem, emphasizing one aspect to the detriment of others of significance. Consequently, as noted in the Introduction, our study examines Paradise Regained's central theological and philosophical equation of Being and Freedom. Furthermore, our mode of approach is a running commentary and analysis to help us trace the poem's developing intellectual drama. Book I sets the stage for the conflict of ideas. During the first council with his cohorts, …

The Radical Pietists: Celibate Communal Societies Established In The United States Before 1820, Delburn Carpenter Jan 1972

The Radical Pietists: Celibate Communal Societies Established In The United States Before 1820, Delburn Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As a group, celibate communal societies have been the most successful communal societies in the United States. There have been many valuable studies of the celibate communal societies as individual societies. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of studies investigating their unity as a religious group, as examples of a particular phenomenon within Pietism. This study, limited to the seven earliest, celibate communal societies in the United States, has attempted to prove that the beliefs and practices of those seven societies united them as a group within Pietism similar to the unity of Pietist groups within Christianity, Bohemia Manor, the …

El Tiempo En La PoesíA De Machado, Mario O. Curbelo Jan 1972

El Tiempo En La PoesíA De Machado, Mario O. Curbelo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study proposes to demonstrate that time is the general emotional basis for the lyric poetry of Antonio Machado, and to point out the human quality with which it is expressed in his verses. First we examined his poetic theory to determine how the sense of time is set forth in the composition of the poem, and noted the one specific example he offers as a demonstration of said theory. Then we went on to observe in many of his verses that he indeed follow the precept he laid down in prose, and through the analysis of these poems we …

Only With The Heart -- A Consideration Of Love In The Novels Of John Steinbeck, Dorthy S. Cummings Jan 1972

Only With The Heart -- A Consideration Of Love In The Novels Of John Steinbeck, Dorthy S. Cummings

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The consistency with which John Steinbeck evaluated his characters by revealing the nature of their commitments indicates the importance of love as a motivational and thematic force in his work. In every novel that he wrote from 1933 to 1961, the characters were defined by the extent to which they loved and were loved. They were enlarged by belonging to and being responsible for the thing they loved. They were diminished by rejection or failure in love. Love, in the Steinbeck novels, included a wide variety of commitments that shared, in addition to a common function in the lives of …

The Concept Of Salvation In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Janet Grant Jan 1972

The Concept Of Salvation In The Fiction Of Flannery O’Connor, Janet Grant

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The thesis for which this serves as an abstract consists of a critical investigation of the concept of salvation as seen in the fiction of Flannery O'Connor. To the casual reader, O'Connor's stories provide entertainment, but on more careful perusal, the reader perceives a certain pattern in each story which points to the attainment of salvation. O'Connor is a Catholic writer who enjoys a universal appeal because of the concepts with which she deals . The desire for salvation is not limited to any one religion; rather, the concept of a spiritual existence after death is espoused by many religions. …

Selected Choral Literature For The High School Chamber Choir: With Specific Reference To The Style And Performance Practice Of Renaissance Choral Music, Alan J. Hagen Jan 1972

Selected Choral Literature For The High School Chamber Choir: With Specific Reference To The Style And Performance Practice Of Renaissance Choral Music, Alan J. Hagen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The decade of the 1960's witnessed a growing interest in choral chamber music. This became increasingly apparent in clinics and conventions across the country which devoted considerable attention to chamber choir literature, style , and performance practice. This trend was further manifested through informative articles, which appeared in music periodicals with growing regularity late in the decade, concerning the chamber choir and inherent problems. Choral chamber music took on added significance in Iowa in 1968 when the Iowa High School Music Association introduced chamber choir competition into the state music contest series. This action prompted numerous questions regarding the definition …

Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen Jan 1972

Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem was the creation of ceramic sculpture. This was an area I had not explored very much. When I did explore the sculptural range of clay it was difficult to express myself. Slab construction was the first method of exploration into clay sculpture. With this method I could not acquire the shapes necessary in my sculptures. But this slab construction lead me into casting of objects. Airplane models were the final objects to be cast. Slabs of clay were pressed into these airplane casts. These airplane shapes were then assembled and fired in a kiln. To complete the sculpture …

Stilicho: The Man And His Times, David Bliss Hanawalt Jan 1972

Stilicho: The Man And His Times, David Bliss Hanawalt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this thesis, Stilicho: The Man and His Times, is to study a period of the history of the Roman Empire through the life of Count Stilicho. The purpose is also to appraise the career of this barbarian Roman general in order to give what I think is a fairer evaluation of the man than has been presented by former historians. Stilicho was stigmatized by the historian Eunapius (fl. 400), and though some historians have commented favorably about Stilicho, few have attempted to assess his importance in Roman history. I have treated major interpretations of Stilicho 1 s …

William Faulkner: Innocence, Idiots, And A Moral Order For Yoknapatawpha, Joseph Scott Drips Jan 1972

William Faulkner: Innocence, Idiots, And A Moral Order For Yoknapatawpha, Joseph Scott Drips

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi includes characters and situations that are often described as unexpected, abnormal, and even grotesque. Isaac Snopes of The Hamlet, Benjy Compson of The Sound and the Fury, and Jim Bond of Absalom, Absalom! represent three of the most extreme character portrayals found within the works of William Faulkner. They are described as idiots. This paper views these idiots as a continued development of a character type. To complete this study the idiots are described: (1) through the theme of innocence, (2) as a part of the moral order depicted in Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, and (3) …

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan Jan 1972

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan

Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of American foreign policy in the Middle East, during the post-War period of 1946-1958, was to safeguard the area against Soviet intrusions. This thesis attempts to examine the causes for the failure of the United States to achieve this objective. It concludes that this failure is the result of an alienation of the major national forces in the Middle East. The United States alienated the Arab world by openly and unreservedly supporting Zionist aims in Palestine. She alienated newly independent states by establishing close cooperation with Britain and France, their former colonial masters. She alienated revolutionary nationalists …

The Transition To Nazism, The History Of The German Town Of Pfungstadt, 1928 To 1935, David E. Arns Jan 1972

The Transition To Nazism, The History Of The German Town Of Pfungstadt, 1928 To 1935, David E. Arns

Dissertations and Theses

Pfungstadt is a small German town which to date has not earned a footnote in the histories of either the Weimar Republic or the Third Reich. Based upon the efforts of men in towns like Pfungstadt (and towns which were not like Pfungstadt) the members of the Nazi party built a political structure which reached to the pinnacle upon which Adolf Hitler stood. Researching the growth of the Nazi party, the intense struggles that occurred with democratic forces, the seizure of power and the installation of a workable system of government is the problem. This thesis in no way purports …

Maternal Employment As A Positive Reaction To The Situation Of Anomie, Betty Jean Sundberg Jan 1972

Maternal Employment As A Positive Reaction To The Situation Of Anomie, Betty Jean Sundberg

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In 1964, a doctoral dissertation was written on the subject of maternal employment in relation to the structural state of anomie. The present study has attempted to duplicate the essential material to determine if the hypothesis presented would hold up under further investigation. Essentially, the hypothesis proposed was "employment is seen as a purposeful and ordered alternative for women to the state of anomie." The definition of anomie was taken from the concept developed by Merton, and more particularly, Durkheim as a state existent in the structure of a society; the normless situation that develops when there are no values …
