Bach's B Minor Flute Sonata: A Study Of Six Recorded Interpretations, Edwin F. Sabrack Jr. Aug 1974

Bach's B Minor Flute Sonata: A Study Of Six Recorded Interpretations, Edwin F. Sabrack Jr.

Masters Theses

The lack of knowledge and understanding of the performance practice of the early eighteenth century can lead to faulty and ill-conceived ideas regarding the interpretation of Bach's flute

sonatas. Problems of tempo, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and ornamentation can overwhelm the student approaching these works for the first time. Luckily, the great flutists of our time have

given us a permanent documentation of their interpretations of this music by committing to record their performances. A diligent study of these performances, (in this case, the Sonata in B Minor), can guide the student to make intelligent decisions for his own playing of …

A Historiography Of The Elizabethan Poor Laws: Late Xixth And Xxth Century Historians, Susan C. Mcnaught Jul 1974

A Historiography Of The Elizabethan Poor Laws: Late Xixth And Xxth Century Historians, Susan C. Mcnaught

Dissertations and Theses

The Elizabethan poor laws stand as a great work from a dynamic period. How and why they were formulated have been questions which historians have asked for centuries. The discussions of these questions have varied, depending on the personal values and biases which each historian brought to this study. It is generally agreed that a very important function of the historian is interpretation. The study of history is not only a study of the events, but a study of the historians and their differing interpretations of those events.

In the past one hundred years, numerous historians have devoted themselves to …

James Butler And The Royalist Cause In Ireland, 1641-1650, Monica A. Brennan Jul 1974

James Butler And The Royalist Cause In Ireland, 1641-1650, Monica A. Brennan

Dissertations and Theses

On June 19, 1647 Ireland's Lord Lieutenant, the Marquis of Ormond, unconditionally surrendered the city of Dublin to the parliament of England. Ormond's biographer, Thomas Carte, records that in January of this year the marquis received a private dispatch clearly indicating Charles I's pleasure -- if it were impossible to hold Dublin and the other royalist garrisons in his name they were to be surrendered to the English rather than the Irish. The loss of the major royalist stronghold in Ireland proved, in effect, to be the turning point of the war in that kingdom; its loss has given Ormond's …

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta Jul 1974

Chicanos In Oregon: An Historical Overview, Richard Wayne Slatta

Dissertations and Theses

Spaniards were the first Europeans to explore the Pacific Northwest coastline, but the only evidence of these early visits is a sprinkling of Spanish place names commemorating the intrepid voyagers. The more than four centuries of recorded history since that time are nearly devoid, of references to Spanish-speaking people, especially Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos). Even the heavy influx of Chicano migrant farm workers in the 1950's and 1960's failed to attract the attention of historians or social science researchers. By 1970, the Spanish-language population had become Oregon's largest ethnic minority and was exerting influence in most areas …

Hermann Lietz And The Landerziehungsheime, John Daniel Flanagan Jul 1974

Hermann Lietz And The Landerziehungsheime, John Daniel Flanagan

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis is Hermann Lietz and the Landerziehungsheime. Its purpose is to discover the sources of the Heime in Lietz's life and thought. It seeks to answer the basic question, "Why did Lietz become an educator and what were his motives in establishing the Landerziehungsheime?" The thesis is divided, generally, into three sections. The first attempts to isolate and reconstruct those events in Lietz's biography which were decisive in the shaping of the educator. The second part investigates certain aspects of the thought of J. G. Fichte, P. de Lagarde end R. Eucken, the three …

Gutzkows Novelle Der Sadduzäer Von Amsterdam Verglichen Mit Seinem Drama Uriel Acosta Und Eine Englische Übersetzung Der Novelle, Clarice Solberg Kitteleson

Dissertations and Theses

The same theme of one unorthodox man opposing a self-appointed authoritative religious institution is interpreted in two different ways in two related works by Karl Friedrich Gutzkow: his Novelle, Der Sadduzaer von Amsterdam (1834), and in his drama, Uriel Acosta (1846). Both works fictionalize the life Uriel Acosta (1585-1640), an unorthodox Jew who fled the Spanish Inquisition in Portugal to the relatively tolerant country of Holland. Acosta's problems were not with the government of Holland, however, but with his own orthodox Jewish temple authorities. He opposed the written interpretations of the Talmud and attempted to question the very idea of …

Federal Support For The Visual Arts In The State Of New Mexico: 1933-1943, William Henry Spurlock Ii

Art & Art History ETDs

During the Depression the federal government of the United States launched the most extensive work relief programs in history. Between 1933 and 1943, the New Deal administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt included provisions in its relief plans to employ the nation's needy artists, who were often forgotten in the face of the needs of America's industrial and agrarian workers. Four major art programs were initiated during the period and administered in each of the forty-eight states.

The visual legacy of the period comprises hundreds of thousand of easel paintings and fine prints and tens of thousands works of sculpture created …

Fictional Treatment Of Politics By Argentine Female Novelists, Bradley M. Class Jul 1974

Fictional Treatment Of Politics By Argentine Female Novelists, Bradley M. Class

Latin American Studies ETDs

Between the ouster of Colonel Juan Domingo Perón from the Presidency of Argentina in September 1955 and his return to power in the Fall of 1973, Argentine women began to write political novels, a new phenomenon in the Argentine literary scene, since few, if any, novels had been created by female novelists prior to 1955. The basic goals of this study are to determine what type(s) of politics these writers possess and to evaluate how they interpret their political ambience through their literary craft. After two historical chapters describing political events from World War I to 1970 and their general …

Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins Jul 1974

Browning's Uses Of Humor., Paul Edward Coggins

English Language and Literature ETDs

Five of the major theories which attempt to explain laughter are those of superiority, contrast, release, enlightenment, and instinct. One seldom finds a single theory that will satisfactorily explain all of our reasons for laughing in response to a particular work. More often than not, a combination of appeals will be found necessary to take into account the complexity of what occurs between impetus and reaction. The overall aim in tracing out some of these major theories of humor and in trying to "place" Browning in relationship to them is to verify the contention that uses of humor, at practically …

The Romance Of Flamenca, John Leonard Ryan Jul 1974

The Romance Of Flamenca, John Leonard Ryan

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Romance of Flamenca is one of the finer though lesser known works of mediaeval literature. In order to bring this thirteenth century masterpiece before a larger literary audience, several scholars have published translations of it in French and in English. An Old Provençal text without a modern translation has not appeared since 1901.

For those American students wishing to read Flamenca in Old Provençal, the scarcity of an available text is further hampered by the lack of an up to date Old Provençal grammar written in English and of an Old Provençal English dictionary. These deficiencies are minimized in …

American Diplomacy And The Mexican Oil Controversy, 1938-1943, Jeremiah J. Ring Jul 1974

American Diplomacy And The Mexican Oil Controversy, 1938-1943, Jeremiah J. Ring

History ETDs

The Mexican Oil Controversy of 1938-1943 developed out of a twenty year quarrel between the foreign-owned petroleum companies and the Mexican government over such issues as the ownership of the subsoil, titles, leases, concessions, and the rights of labor. After a generation of adversary relationships, both of the parties' positions had calcified to the point where there was little room for compromise. While the companies had staked out their position on the defense of the rights of private property, the Mexican government had come to view the conflict as a struggle in the defense of the basic rights of Mexico's …

EspañA En La Epoca De Los Dramas De Max Aub., Alicia Germany De Alarcon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Max Aub, one of the three most outstanding novelists of the post Spanish Civil War, is known also as a story writer, poet, critic, and essayist. Aub is not as well known in the theater because almost all of his dramatic works were written while he was in exile. Some have been staged by groups of amateurs which have not reached the general public. Aub, German by ancestry, French by birth, Spanish by sentiments, and Mexican by recognition, has written an important group of works--in the technical as well as in the literary sense. As an author, he was compelled …

The Role Of Lutheran Theology In India Today, James Canjanam Gamaliel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As I write, I have in mind the pastors and lay leaders of the nine Lutheran Churches of India. The topics treated in this thesis will be useful for group discussions in congregations so that the people and the pastors will realize the heritage of the Lutheran Church. How the five doctrines chosen are crucial in facing the specific problems and opportunities the church in India is facing will be shown in each chapter. In evaluating the contribution of Lutheran theology, the doctrines promulgated by the Second Vatican Council and some Roman Catholic scholars will al.so, when relevant, be referred …

Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark Jul 1974

Money In The Fiction Of Willa Cather, Vincent A. Clark

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The subject of money is important in the fiction of Willa Cather. She discusses it frequently and often at great length. In some works it is a major theme.

Despite its importance, a number of Willa Cather's critics have ignored the subject or have given it only cursory mention. Several ·writers, however, have discussed the subject at length. John H. Randall, III, in particular, analyzes it in great detail.· His analysis, however, goes astray at several key points.

This thesis shows that Willa Cather's attitudes toward money were balanced, humane, and consistent. These attitudes can be summarized as follows: (a) …

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study seeks to provide a method which can be used to obtain the information necessary for the design of apartments within the limitations imposed by prevailing market conditions, financial considerations and investor needs. This is accomplished by presenting first, a method of market analysis designed to determine if a market exists in a given locality and delineating specifics about that market which would affect the design. A method is also developed for translating the market conditions into a form which wold indicate whether or not a proposed apartment project is economically feasible and what its probable value would be …

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet Jun 1974

The Literature Of Verbal Nonsense In Lewis Carroll, Samuel Beckett And Eugène Ionesco, Madeleine R. Scalliet

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nonsense literature and nonsense poetry have provided release from the shackles of logic for centuries. But the greatest masters of English nonsense are Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Carroll gives, in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, the principles underlying a carefully-built structure. In Lewis Carroll's nonsense world, the creatures break the determinism of meaning and significance.

Nonsense can be defined by the following characteristics: a strong adherence to the concrete in every way possible in order to allow the intellect to be in complete control of its material and thus prevent reference; the elaboration of a pseudo-logic based …

Some Sources Of Puritan Sabbatarianism, John C. Powers Jun 1974

Some Sources Of Puritan Sabbatarianism, John C. Powers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

M. M. Knappen's observation, that the· Puritan doctrine of Sunday was a bit of English originality and perhaps the only important English contribution to the development of Reformed theology in the first century of its history, initiated this study; Some Sources of Puritan Sabbatarianism. Since sabbatarianism was not inherent in the teachings of the Continental Reformers it was necessary to look elsewhere for the Puritan inspiration.

The fifty-year period between 1535 and 1585 was chosen as the area of study because of two significant events that marked the beginning and the end of the period. July, 1537, saw the …

"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson Jun 1974

"Presentational Immediacy" In The Poetry Of James Dickey, Lethiel C. Parson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The thesis explores the "presentational immediacy" of the poetry of James Dickey. "Presentational immediacy" is a phrase used by the poet, himself, to describe his attempt to provide a verbal equivalent of an intense experience. He also defines the phrase in stating that his aim is to effect spontaneity and reader involvement in the experience of the poems. This is a relatively difficult objective to accomplish. However, as is shown in the study of the poems in Chapter V, Dickey's handling of the general diction and imagery of the poems does fulfill his objective of presenting an experience in a …

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr. May 1974

The Background And Development Of The 1871 Korean-American Incident: A Case Study In Cultural Conflict, Robert Ray Swartout Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an attempt to combine the disciplines of Asian history and United States diplomatic history in analyzing the 1871 Korean-American Incident. The Incident revolves around the Low-Rodgers expedition to Korea, and the subsequent breakdown of peaceful negotiations into a military clash of arms.

To describe the Incident as merely another example of American "imperialism,'' or as a result of narrow-minded Korean isolationism, is to oversimplify its causes and miss the larger implications that can be learned from it. A basic premise of this paper is that the 1871 Incident is an example of East-West cultural conflict. As such, …

Art & Art History ETDs

The Archivo General de Indias of Sevilla houses one of the largest collections of Spanish colonial maps and plans in existence. Those drawings related to process of urbanism and architectural constructions have hardly been touched by investigators. This study presents a body of 130 maps and plans from New Spain, the Floridas, and Louisiana ranging from 1579 to 1813. Drawings were selected from the holdings of the Archivo de Indias which depicted some facet of colonial urbanization. Aside from furnishing general information concerning city and regional planning, urban beautification, and fortification, these maps and plans also reveal, many aspects of …
