"A Love That Transcends Hunger": Choice And Edenic Imagery In Contemporary Queer Poetry, Aubrey Dickens
"A Love That Transcends Hunger": Choice And Edenic Imagery In Contemporary Queer Poetry, Aubrey Dickens
Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary poets such as Richard Siken are known for their sexual and explicitly queer nature. Others have debated the spiritual dimension of queer poetry such as Siken's, with individuals such as Marta Figlerowicz arguing that though one of Siken's poems calls itself a litany, it does not match all the rules of a litany due to not being clearly devotional. Using an outside-in analytical approach to Richard Siken's "Snow and Dirty Rain," Kayleb Rae Candrilli's "There is a Point at Which I Tire of My Own Fear," and Jericho Brown's "Eden", I argue that spirituality can be found in explicit …
The Reproductive Politics Of Maiolica: Birth, Abortion, And Gendered Authority During The Italian Renaissance, Rose Brookhart
The Reproductive Politics Of Maiolica: Birth, Abortion, And Gendered Authority During The Italian Renaissance, Rose Brookhart
Honors Projects
In the aftermath of several plagues that decimated the population of the Italian peninsula since 1348, men and women from all socioeconomic backgrounds safeguarded their individual corporeal health and collective societal well-being through a variety of routines and rituals, which were prescribed but at the same time extremely personalized. This increased attention in personal and civic health promoted new trends in both literal and material consumption during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Purgative drugs and medicines were a common facet of medicine during the Italian Renaissance and were ingested regularly to alleviate commonplace bodily discomforts in addition to more serious …
Exploring Pedagogical Approaches: A Comparative Analysis Of Information Delivery Methods In Fish Dissection Instruction, Kiara Smidt
Honors Projects
The Covid-19 pandemic prompted a global shift to remote work and education, challenging traditional teaching methods. This research explores the effectiveness of audiovisual versus visual-only guides in teaching perch dissection anatomy, safety, and procedure. The study involves a cross-sectional experiment with students from an Introduction to Biology course at Bowling Green State University. Participants were divided into groups using either a video or a written guide, and their knowledge was assessed before and after the dissection. Results calculated through a Student’s t-test indicate no significant difference in overall effectiveness between the two methods, apart from labeling an anatomy diagram and …

Utilizing Special Interests: Developing A Storybook For A Minimally Speaking Autistic Child To Support Communication, Olivia Fordyce
Honors Projects
The purpose of my Honors Project is to develop a framework for designing a storybook that can be used as a communication tool with minimally speaking autistic children. The project answers two clinically relevant questions within the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
- What do we know from prior literature about the use of storybooks to support communication in minimally speaking autistic children?
- What factors are important to consider in designing a storybook for minimally speaking autistic children?
I conducted a literature review exploring adapted storybooks and autistic children’s special interests to answer the project questions. Informed by this knowledge, I have …
First Comes Love, Then Comes Disparage: How The Production Code Impacted Women’S Roles In Romantic Comedies, Emma Hoback
First Comes Love, Then Comes Disparage: How The Production Code Impacted Women’S Roles In Romantic Comedies, Emma Hoback
Honors Projects
Through the analysis of twelve films, I looked to see how the creation and dissolving of the Motion Picture Production Code impacted women’s representation on screen. I looked at six films from the pre-Code era of film (1930-1934) and six films from the newly defined post-Code period (1968-1972). In this paper, I break down the Production Code itself and conduct genre research. The romantic comedy sub-genre was selected for this project. The romantic comedy creates a space for women to have leading roles and have comedy make fun of or reinforce gendered stereotypes. This paper looks at how women went …
Examining Liberty In France And The United States Through Religious Accommodations In Education, Carly Hitchcock
Examining Liberty In France And The United States Through Religious Accommodations In Education, Carly Hitchcock
Honors Projects
Liberty is a key value of the United States of America and France as seen in their key phrases « Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, » and “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Liberty can be broken down into two forms, positive liberty, or the freedom to something, and negative liberty, or the freedom from something. The separation of church and state is a primary pillar of both France and the United States, as it determines how the government of each country interacts with different religions. Public education is a primary socialization experience of citizens in both countries, where …
Two Worlds And In Between: Becoming Goth In The Virtual Spaces Of Tiktok, Marlie Unger
Two Worlds And In Between: Becoming Goth In The Virtual Spaces Of Tiktok, Marlie Unger
Honors Projects
This research explores how the initiation processes of goth subculture have changed with the introduction and implementation of social media. Using a textual analysis of social media content from TikTok, this research identifies themes present in the virtual community that provide greater insight about how someone becomes goth and the factors which influence the transformation. I highlight the importance of subcultural capital in its creation of a social hierarchy and the goth status of members which fall under the categories of "elder goth," "seasoned goth," and "baby bat." Furthermore, this research examines how commodification, education, and gatekeeping influence the lines …
Mental Illness In Modern Media, Grace Smith
Mental Illness In Modern Media, Grace Smith
Honors Projects
This paper will focus on the way mental illness is portrayed in modern media, specifically psychological thriller movies, as many of them feature main characters with some sort of mental illness. The specific mental illnesses present in the movies discussed in this paper are as follows: borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. Psychological thriller movies influence the way consumers view mental illness and those who suffer from mental illnesses. The potential effects of these portrayals will be explored through Stuart Hall’s theory of reception, as it was created based on television media, making it one of …
The Author And Apartheid: Building Pro-Blackness At Bgsu Through James Baldwin And The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Noah C. Fitch
The Author And Apartheid: Building Pro-Blackness At Bgsu Through James Baldwin And The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Noah C. Fitch
Honors Projects
The stories of anti-apartheid and James Baldwin at BGSU provides a basis for a building of pro-Blackness in the on-campus community. Through the contextualization and narrative building through a historical sociological framework, these two events show the extent of activism in the 1970s and 1980s rather than the traditional narrative that is discussed. By expanding that narrative, it also expands the narrative surrounding the history not just of BGSU, but the way universities frame their own histories. Additionally, these events take place in the era when the transition from looking at Civil Rights to Human Rights is more prevalent and …

Portuguese As L3: Student And Teacher Perceptions Of The Role Of Spanish In Portuguese Learning, Caroline Diniz Ainsworth
Theses and Dissertations
This research looks at a beginning Portuguese course for Spanish bilinguals in a United States university to analyze the perceptions that Spanish bilinguals and their teacher have about the facilitative and non-facilitative aspects of Spanish on the learning of Portuguese as a third language. The study investigates four main areas of language learning: vocabulary, general grammar, sentence structure, and pronunciation. Findings show that students and their teacher perceive Spanish as facilitative for Portuguese learning, but not in all areas.
Tools Of Oppression: The Virginia School System And The School To Prison Pipeline, Natalie Johnson-Abbott
Tools Of Oppression: The Virginia School System And The School To Prison Pipeline, Natalie Johnson-Abbott
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper examines the intersection of race, cultural expression, and disciplinary practices within the American education system, focusing on Virginia's school districts. Recent legislative efforts, such as the CROWN Act in Texas, have sought to address discriminatory practices related to cultural expression in schools. Legal actions, like the lawsuit against the Winner School District in South Dakota, have aimed to rectify disparities in disciplinary outcomes for Indigenous students. However, meaningful reform requires more than just legislative and legal interventions; it necessitates a fundamental shift in educational practices to promote inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. This includes diversifying school staff, implementing culturally …

Poe’S Theory Of The Short Story And Hybridity In East Asian Short Fiction: Considering Mori Ogai’S “Maihime” And Su Manshu’S “Suizanji”, Anthony Michael Wood
Poe’S Theory Of The Short Story And Hybridity In East Asian Short Fiction: Considering Mori Ogai’S “Maihime” And Su Manshu’S “Suizanji”, Anthony Michael Wood
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis considers how Mori Ōgai’s “Maihime” (1890) and Su Manshu’s “Suizanji” (1916) conform and differ from Edgar Allen Poe’s theory of the short story. It then considers Ōgai’s and Su’s reading of the short stories and East Asian short fiction as well as Ōgai’s definition of the short story to consider why these works of short fiction differ from Poe’s definition, concluding that they are hybrid works, which seek to combine the short story and East Asian short fiction.
The 1950s Davy Crockett Craze: Strengthening National Identity After The Korean War, Donna Marie Stapley
The 1950s Davy Crockett Craze: Strengthening National Identity After The Korean War, Donna Marie Stapley
Theses and Dissertations
With the stalemate of the Korean War, the United States went through a dispirited time when the citizens tried to make sense of a war they felt had no meaning. With the new threat of the Cold War and Communism, Americans struggled to find security and a way to rebuild their demoralized nation. It was during this 1950s time that Walt Disney decided to produce a movie about a historical figure, Davy Crockett. Using the legends told during Crockett's lifetime, Disney adapted and enhanced these legends. The result was what is famously known as the 1950s Crockett Craze. Disney provided …
The Materiality Of The Soul In Plutarch's Moralia, Caleb Cole Deppermann
The Materiality Of The Soul In Plutarch's Moralia, Caleb Cole Deppermann
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines Plutarch's vague comments about the materiality of the soul in Moralia. My contention is that, despite suggestions to the contrary, Plutarch aligned with Plato in thinking about the soul as immaterial. I argue that a deeper understanding of Plutarch's relationship to Plato as well as the Stoics and Epicureans of his time shed light on his otherwise ambiguous passages. The end result will be (1) a more secure understanding of Plutarch's position on the materiality of the soul and (2) an improved ability to appreciate Plutarch's playful and vivid language as he describes immaterial souls with material …

Online Theses and Dissertations
Black and African American adolescent girls have a disproportionate prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease when compared to any other ethnic group. Data from previous studies have determined that hair harassment and hair care maintenance are explicit barriers to physical activity among Black and African American female adolescents. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study is to examine the lived experiences and implications of hair harassment, hair bias, and hair maintenance among African American female adolescents and investigate their usage and perceptions of yoga/mind-body practice to overcome hair related barriers to physical activity. Nine African American females …
Sex, Consent, And Autonomy In Twilight And Vampire Academy, Sophia Carter
Sex, Consent, And Autonomy In Twilight And Vampire Academy, Sophia Carter
Online Theses and Dissertations
The thesis discusses how two popular young adult series, Twilight and Vampire Academy, use vampires to aid in conversations revolving around prevalent teenage issues such as sex, consent, and autonomy. Both series have romantic relationships at the forefront of their plot. By having the main characters of the books be in new relationships, the series can show the different trials and tribulations that go with being in a romance for the first time. Sex is a topic that gets brought up with both fictional couples and the two authors deal with it in separate ways. Bringing up sex in young …
"The First Fruits Of A Woman's Wit": Reclaiming The Childbirth Metaphor In Aemilia Lanyer's Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, Carolyn Mae Shakespear
"The First Fruits Of A Woman's Wit": Reclaiming The Childbirth Metaphor In Aemilia Lanyer's Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, Carolyn Mae Shakespear
Theses and Dissertations
The childbirth metaphor adopts imagery from female bodies carrying and delivering children to describe the effort and relationship of a poet to his/her poem. This was a commonly used trope in the renaissance, particularly by male authors. This thesis examines the way early modern woman poet, Aemilia Lanyer uses the childbirth metaphor in her poem, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum. Lanyer ultimately considers not only the physical realities of childbirth in her use of the metaphor, but also the emotional, social, and theological consequences. By doing so, I argue that Lanyer reclaims the metaphor from her male contemporaries in order to …
Acceptable Things, Janaya Lucile Tanner
Acceptable Things, Janaya Lucile Tanner
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis is a collection of short stories which explore motherhood through the lens of science fiction. The stories take place in various settings and landscapes in imagined future for humanity and are set within the frame of a sentient space station speaking to her daughter. The stories explore ideas of pregnancy, access to maternal care, and relationships between mothers and daughters. Environmental concerns and the link between maternal bodies and natural landscapes are prominent throughout the collection. Ultimately, these stories ask and seek to explore the question of what motherhood can mean, how our relationships to our parents and …

Composing A Cadenza For Mozart's Violin Concerto In A Major, Gracie Hayes
Composing A Cadenza For Mozart's Violin Concerto In A Major, Gracie Hayes
Honors Projects
Historically, soloists from the Western art music tradition were expected to improvise a virtuosic passage during their performance of a concerto—that is, an extensive orchestral work featuring an instrumental soloist. These improvised passages, called cadenzas, were performed unaccompanied by the soloist during a prominent cadence and were derived from the ornamentation that occurred naturally during cadences in vocal arias. Contemporary composers write out these virtuosic passages for performers, who are rarely expected to improvise during a performance, with the exception of jazz musicians. When performing works dating from before the Romantic period, musicians are left with a dilemma. Should they …
A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart
A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart
Honors Projects
This essay explores the utilization of folklore beliefs in psychological warfare through a comparative analysis of General Edward Geary Lansdale's tactics during the Hukbalahap insurgency at the beginning of the Cold War and the historical exploitation of the asuang myth by Spanish Catholic missionaries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While both instances involved leveraging local superstitions to influence behavior, their motivations and approaches diverged significantly. Unlike the missionaries, Lansdale's actions stemmed from a strategic imperative to combat communism rather than a sense of racial superiority or religious domination. Drawing parallels between Lansdale's methods and centuries-old patterns of oppression, this …

The Anatomical Embodiment Of Morning Routines In The Reduction Of Anxiety: An Intervention, Natalie Wright
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The topic under investigation is whether physically embodying a morning routine that was designed through the lens of Laban Bartenieff Movement Analysis (LBMA) will reduce daily symptoms of individuals diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Since morning routines play a significant part in one’s preparation for the day, I created an individualized LBMA morning routine for a specific client to embody. In addition to the routine, the client documented the process of their anxiety levels on a weekly basis. This client was a white, female, 19-year-old, lesbian college student who was previously diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The movement analysis …

This proposed theatre company strives to become a quintessential meeting place for all Kentuckians to explore their history, create new Kentucky-based work, and represent the authentic experience of the diverse regions of the state, from the large population centers of Louisville to the mountainous Appalachia. Reflecting on the current struggles facing regional and professional theatre companies across the country in the post-pandemic entertainment economy, the strategic planning of this theatre outlines the necessity …
Coming Out Of The Coffin: The History And Present Of Queerness In The Vampire Genre., Bailey Drummond
Coming Out Of The Coffin: The History And Present Of Queerness In The Vampire Genre., Bailey Drummond
Honors Projects
This essay delves into the captivating and lasting influence of vampires on popular culture since their creation. The fascination with vampires can be traced back to literary works such as John Polidori's "The Vampyre" and Bram Stoker's classic "Dracula," which have served as foundations for vampire mythology across different media platforms. Despite the evolution of media and cultural contexts, certain themes surrounding vampires have persisted throughout history. Notably, vampires have been portrayed as symbols of sexuality and queerness, reflecting societal fears and desires from past eras to the present day. These themes have been critically analyzed and dissected in various …
Hattie’S Echo!: A Dramaturgical Experiment Of Interdisciplinary Context In Theatre, Belle Frahm
Hattie’S Echo!: A Dramaturgical Experiment Of Interdisciplinary Context In Theatre, Belle Frahm
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Written by fellow TMA student Charlotte Westover, Hattie’s Echo! explores the stories of two faithful families, one Mormon pioneer family and one modern family, both at intense turning points in their lives. These families deal with death, hunger, emotional abuse, and pornography addictions. This new musical featured sensitive religious, historical, and biographical topics. My work aimed to understand the most effective way to provide context to all stakeholders of the production (the design team, the actors, and the audience), in each of these topic areas. While a dramaturg’s work is often focused on engaging one of these member groups with …
An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton
An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton
Honors Projects
The book of Hosea provides a rich story of the life of the prophet Hosea and the constant woes of the nation of Israel. Through analysis of commentaries from past theologians and modern psychological studies, the contents of Hosea will be reinforced as viable literature to learn from. Despite belief in the historical legitimacy of the book, through research, we find humanity’s deepest desire is to be fully loved and fully known. Analysis of attachment theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs show us that the story of Hosea demonstrates our insecurities and the proper response to them.
Audio Dramas As Self-Expression For Marginalized Identities, Athena Towne
Audio Dramas As Self-Expression For Marginalized Identities, Athena Towne
Honors Projects
Fiction podcasts, also knows as Audio Dramas, often afford a level of creative freedom to potential creators that is not seen in other popular media. This is seen explicitly through the marginalized representation that popular works in the medium allow. This work seeks to explore why the medium allows for such stories to flourish, as well as how these stories are received. Then, to test this theory, this paper documents the process of creating an audio drama, from conception to completion.

The Bengali Oil-Eaters: A Speculative Approach To New Materialism And The Nonhuman In Contemporary Petrofiction, Jenna Wayland
The Bengali Oil-Eaters: A Speculative Approach To New Materialism And The Nonhuman In Contemporary Petrofiction, Jenna Wayland
Honors Projects
Despite oil’s heavy saturation within the context of contemporary global life, novelistic registrations of oil frontiers and extractive drilling in contemporary world literature remain proportionally barren with regards to oil’s political and geographical importance across the world-system. Petro-cultural production, transnational in scale and imposing in material basis, relegates oil to a paradoxical literary deferment. The general invisibility of petrofiction within the petro-sphere suggests that the materialist basis of petroleum and its fraught geopolitical history has culturally transformed oil into a repressed, peripheral, and hidden material that subsequently renders the oil-encounter unseen in contemporary literature. This creative synthesis of the oil-encounter …
