The Price Of Progress: The Georgia Railroad Strike Of 1909, Mark V. Wetherington Jan 1978

The Price Of Progress: The Georgia Railroad Strike Of 1909, Mark V. Wetherington

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The Georgia Railroad strike of 1909 found Its participants in a period of unsettled values and directions. It was fought out against an agricultural backdrop in which many Georgians still remembered the sacrifice of the war years, bitter Reconstruction, and the glorification of the Lost Cause. Nevertheless, the strike possessed all the animosities of twentieth century industrial strife. The struggle during the spring of 1909 warned Southerners that the future years of industrial growth necessary for the development of a New South might not be the smooth, progressive, uplifting transition envisioned by some Southern leaders. The union's attempt to use …

Sculptural Constructions In Fabric, Judith Keipp Johnson Jan 1978

Sculptural Constructions In Fabric, Judith Keipp Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The title of this artist's thesis exhibition was "Fibre Works," but this abstract title is more appropriately "Sculptural Constructions in Fabric. It has been her experience that "fibres" is often associated . . with the weaving process and it is important to note that she works with fabrics--the end product of weaving. The artist's objectives are three-fold: 1) to take advantage of various fabric properties and utilize those qualities in a three-dimensional form, 2) to show clothing influence in the constructions, and 3) to suggest how particular clothing pieces might reflect broader restrictions in people and their environments. Of paramount …

George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal Jan 1978

George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While George Meredith's sixteen-line sonnet sequence Modern Love fits neatly into his philosophical, triadic system of Blood, Brain, and Spirit,1 the neatness of this correspondence should not cause us to ignore other complementary systems that inform and expand the poem. A careful reading of Modern: Love will expose a consistent allusion to the biblical myth of Adam and Eve, an allusion which adds a grand, universalized dimension to the poem's focused drama. Meredith has re-interpreted the myth to fit his own evaluation of love; moreover, the imagery of Modern Love, as it transforms the original myth, allows us to …

Functions Of Inversion In Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, Patricia Lee Loumena Jan 1978

Functions Of Inversion In Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, Patricia Lee Loumena

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Several guiding principles should be established to discuss the function of original sin in Doctor Faustus. It will be considered synonymous with the Fall, the Adamic myth. It is not to say that original sin must necessarily refer to strict Christian doctrine. It explains the moral implication of man's position in the divine hierarchy, as well as symbolizes the presence of the demonic throughout his cultural consciousness of sin.

For the purpose of this essay, original sin concentrates upon several primary factors: the quest for knowledge, the succumbing to sensual temptation, the transgression through pride, and the psychology of the …

Society And Artistic Change, Alan Quincy Jan 1978

Society And Artistic Change, Alan Quincy

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The most elementary discussion of art involves some concern with the question: what is art? As anyone who has tackled this question knows, it seems to have no simple answer. This is not to say that it is not fascinating and worthy of much discussion, however it does not need to be answered for the purposes of this paper. The pragmatic nature of this sociological endeavor does not require the philosophical necessity of defining art in terms of attraction and aesthetics. All that is necessary for this paper is that an agreement be reached on what is to be studied. …

An Experimental Study Of The Effectiveness Of Planned Instruction In Listening At The First Grade Level, Mary Elizabeth Robertshaw Umhofer Jan 1978

An Experimental Study Of The Effectiveness Of Planned Instruction In Listening At The First Grade Level, Mary Elizabeth Robertshaw Umhofer

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Research concerning listening has suggested that good listening habits can be taught, are important to the learner, and should therefore be developed through instruction. Gains at various levels have been noted in this chapter. The experiment presented in this paper arose from my curiosity about the effects of listening training in*the early grades. Besides considering earlier findings, it seemed a sound idea to begin at the beginning. Because I recognized the value of listening to both students and adults, I undertook a project and then a study to assemble some listening activities and then to determine how effective planned instruction …

Abraham Maslow's Concept Of Self Actualizaton As Illustrated In The Life Of Jesus, Peter Minh Quang Chu Jan 1978

Abraham Maslow's Concept Of Self Actualizaton As Illustrated In The Life Of Jesus, Peter Minh Quang Chu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

How to be authentic to the self is possibly the main goal of all human efforts. Self-actualization is an urgent and important problem because it is the last stage in shaping a man's personality. In self-actualization, a person becomes more fully developed, more fully mature, indeed, a more complete person by fully actualizing his potentialities. In self actualization, the person lives what he potentially and really is.

Politics Of Land Use : The Lengthy Saga Of Senate Bill 100, Kathleen Joan Zachary Jan 1978

Politics Of Land Use : The Lengthy Saga Of Senate Bill 100, Kathleen Joan Zachary

Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical literature on the politics of land use is so limited that original research into the problem was required. The drafting and enactment of Senate Bill 100 by the Fifty-seventh Session of the Oregon Legislature provided the basis for researching my premise of need equals want. The bill designated state land use planning organizational structure.

The Land Use Policy Committee minutes and Legislative minutes were merged with information attained through personal interviews from a variety of participants in the drafting of the Senate Bill 100. Theoretical literature was equally available in Public Administration, Law and Land Use Planning. The Constitutions …

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque Jan 1978

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

May Swenson's poetry contains four major image patterns: (1) sexual/sensual, (2) birth, (3) plant and (4) animal. These patterns work together to support a single unifying theme in Swenson's work: respect for all forms of life and for the natural world. This thesis devotes one chapter to each specific pattern. Chapter two analyzes sexual/sensual imagery which emphasizes the need for mutual respect in sexual relationships as well as for respect for the natural environment. This pattern is divided into three subcategories: (1) sexual/sensual imagery supporting themes dealing specifically with sexual roles and relationships, (2) sexual/sensual imagery celebrating the sexuality of …

El Desarrollo De La Figura De Don Juan En Algunos Autores De La Generacion Del '98, Diógenes Fajardo Jan 1978

El Desarrollo De La Figura De Don Juan En Algunos Autores De La Generacion Del '98, Diógenes Fajardo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the most attractive figures in Spanish literature is that of Don Juan, whose legendary role is to satisfy his carnal appetites, to deceive women and to mock the dead. Beginning with the Burlador de Sevilla, in which Tirso de Molina makes a universal myth of Don Juan, this thesis attempts to trace his evolution through select works of the Generation of '98. The Romantic Jose Zorrilla, in his Don Juan Tenorio, begins a process of humanization, with the consequent demythifying of the character, when his Don Juan falls in love with Ines. This somewhat humanized universal myth, the …

Combination Of Stained Field And Hard-Edge In Painting, Manjula Haksar Jan 1978

Combination Of Stained Field And Hard-Edge In Painting, Manjula Haksar

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

All the experiences and impressions of artists affect their work. Experiences gained by experimentation with media, environmental changes and intelligent visual growth often dictate the mode of communication. Part of my experiences have been the influence of the color, structure, and rythmic [sic] line in Indian cave frescoes. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the Jatak Tales, create an emotional and psychological impact; their sensuous movements breathe something of the warmth found in the Indian air. Their color, that of the earth, and their great linear emphasis have profoundly influenced me and are apparent in my paintings in the curves of …

Henry A. Wallace And China, Linda Eichmeyer Clarkson Jan 1978

Henry A. Wallace And China, Linda Eichmeyer Clarkson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The views of Henry A. Wallace with respect to China underwent a number of changes through the years. One constant theme ran throughout all of his references to the "Middle Kingdom," however--the importance of that nation to world peace and prosperity. Wallace publicly affirmed his support for the Chinese Nationalist Government during his diplomatic mission to Soviet Asia in 1944, but in a private report to President Roosevelt confided his true criticisms of and fears for Chiang's regime. He termed the present Kuomintang leadership "reactionary," and called upon the United States to be ready to shift its support if a …

“Theatre and Drama and the Nazi Concentration Camps” analyzes the use of the camps in post-war dramatic literature and in post-war theatrical production. In the Introduction, the history and functions of the internment centers in the Third Reich are discussed. A brief history of actual theatrical activities in the concentration camps is also presented. In the first chapter, entitled “Dramas Set Inside the Concentration Camps,” a number of plays whose dramatic actions are set in the Nazi internment centers are analyzed. Dyarchy: An Unavoidable Transitional Stage In The Constitutional Development Of India, N. Chiranjeevi Jan 1978

Dyarchy: An Unavoidable Transitional Stage In The Constitutional Development Of India, N. Chiranjeevi

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dyarchy was the outcome of a long struggle between 1909 and 1919. The nationalists. and the imperialists all have contributed to its shaping. This is what I propose here. Specifically, my focus is upon the events in India, and more specifically, on how World War I changed the imperialists' and the nationalists' attitudes, and precipitated a process of change in the administrative system of India. What happened to the reforms of 1909, and what was happening throughout India during 1909 and 1919, particularly at a time when a new concept of "self-determination" began to prevail over the older notion of …

The Problem Of Evil: The Interaction Of Philosophy And Fiction (1661-1715), Audrey Vivien Bull Dec 1977

The Problem Of Evil: The Interaction Of Philosophy And Fiction (1661-1715), Audrey Vivien Bull

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This dissertation analyzes trends in philosophy and the novel on the question of evil during the period 1661-1715. The problem was treated on three levels: cosmic, personal and social evil. Three questions dominate: Why does evil exist? From whence does it come? How can it be alleviated or eliminated? By the study of similarities and differences between the works of a philosopher and a novel, the dissertation shows how abstract ideas were rendered into concrete situations and how serious concepts were made palatable to a wide-spread audience through the sugar-coating of fiction. Chapter I gives a broad view of philosophies …

Synthesis In Hemingway: From Deep Pessimism Toward Hope In Selected Hemingway Short Stories, John D. Hussey Dec 1977

Synthesis In Hemingway: From Deep Pessimism Toward Hope In Selected Hemingway Short Stories, John D. Hussey

American Studies ETDs

Hemingway’s early short stories, In Our Time, Men Without Women, his early novel, The Sun Also Rises, and his later novel, The Old Man and the Sea, all fit into a recurrent American literary and philosophic canon, the confrontation with Nothingness. First, this paper explains what is meant by the experience or confrontation with Nothingness. Second, the paper attempts to draw comparisons between Hemingway’s experiences with Nothingness and that experience as it shows in five other American writers, specifically Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, Salinger, and Wolfe. Third, this paper attempts to make clear the casual relationship in Hemingway’s work between various …

Background To The Second Amendment, John Thomas Nichols Dec 1977

Background To The Second Amendment, John Thomas Nichols

Dissertations and Theses

Research into the background of the Second Amendment is hampered by its relationship to the current highly emotional debate over gun control. Many otherwise useful secondary sources either ignore the issue completely or give accounts which reflect the controversies of the twentieth century rather than those of the eighteenth. Fortunately, however, the Americans of the revolutionary era wrote extensively about the subject.

With independence, the Americans were faced with the problem of organizing and controlling a defense establishment. The new nation was virtually defenseless: the

Continental Army was disbanded and the militia, after years of neglect, emasculated. During the decade …

Photonuclear Activation At The Pantex Plant, Gilbert L. Rendon Dec 1977

Photonuclear Activation At The Pantex Plant, Gilbert L. Rendon

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This is a structuralist reading of the theatrical works of Henry de Montherlant. The genera I approach incorporates the theories of Claude Levi-Strauss, Ro land Barth es, Jean Piaget, Jean Rousset, and Leo Spitzer. Two major types of structure are examined: the interrelationship of characters and the interrelationship of ideas. Two theoretical mode Is are constructed. The first is a triadic mode I of the relationships among characters in tightly-knit communities, based upon the sociological theories of Georg Simmel and Theodore Cap low. The second is a semiotic model of the relationships between opposing ideas, based upon the carré sémiotique …

The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix Dec 1977

The Function Of Biblical Sources In The Structure And Meaning Of Blake's Milton, Donna Standfier Rix

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study takes seriously the claim made by William Blake in his epic poem Milton that the model for his art was the Bible, especially the works of those "more ancient & consciously & professedly inspired Men," the Hebrew prophets. Through an examination of circumstances surrounding the composition of Blake's "first Vision of Light," and through analysis of the poem itself, it is shown not only that Blake was acquainted with certain conventional patterns and formulae from the biblical prophetic tradition, but also that he drew upon his knowledge of such strategies in this short poem enclosed in a letter …

The Effects Of Encouragement, Praise, And Discouragement On Internally And Externally Oriented Children, Judith A. Anderson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary aim of this study was to investigate three types of parent communication--encouragement, praise, and discouragement--with regard to feelings elicited and perceived helpfulness, as reported by fifth- and sixth-grade subjects grouped according to high, medium, or low locus of control. Subjects for the study were 37 male and 47 female volunteers. Bialer•s Children•s Locus of Control Scale was used to classify males and females into a high (internal), medium (middle range), or low (external) group. Encouragement, praise, and discouragement were operationally defined as those responses receiving total agreement from a panel of experts as representing the Adlerian concepts under …

The Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company, Thomas W. Southall Dec 1977

The Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company, Thomas W. Southall

Art & Art History ETDs

In 1865 in the small northern New Hampshire town of Littleton, Edward and Benjamin West Kilburn founded the Kilburn Brothers Stereoscopic View Company. Stereoscopic photography is the process whereby mounted pairs of slightly different photographs give the illusion of three dimensionality when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereography had been introduced to America over ten years before the Kilburns began publishing views, but it became an especially popular form of parlor entertainment in the decade following the Civil War.

Particularly noted for their stereographs of the White Mountains, the Kilburn Company also published quantities of views of national and international subjects. …

Ben Jonson And The Traditions Of The Clever Servant, Ellen C. Dowling Nov 1977

Ben Jonson And The Traditions Of The Clever Servant, Ellen C. Dowling

English Language and Literature ETDs

The intriguing clever servant has had a long and profitable life on the popular stage. In this study I examine two of the most important clever servants, Ben Jonson's Mosca and Face, by measuring them against the Roman, Italian, and native English methods of presenting this archetypal figure. In both Volpone and The Alchemist, which are considered Jonson's masterpieces, the plot, the exposition of satire, and the theatrical brilliance which guarantees their continued popularity depend to a great extent on the machinations of characters who, while inferior in social position, yet demonstrate superior wit, cunning, and--above all--the ability to promote …
