A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

A Survey Of Birth Control Knowledge, Attitudes And Practice Among Adolescents, Susan Warner Andre Jan 1978

A Survey Of Birth Control Knowledge, Attitudes And Practice Among Adolescents, Susan Warner Andre

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Various solutions have been proposed for dealing with the problem of teenage pregnancies. These solutions include strengthening family life, raising moral standards and offering wholesome recreational facilities to adolescents (Marty, 1963). All of the solutions are directed at modifying the source of illegitimacy, that is, at reducing the frequency of non-marital sexual relations among teenagers. Programs attempting to do this by various means have met with a notable lack of success. Evidence indicates that there is and will be in the future a relatively high prevalence of premarital sexual relations (Kinsey, 1973; Reiss, 1966). It seems unlikely that existing programs …

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown Jan 1978

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown

Masters Theses

Plato said, “When the mind thinks, it talks to itself.” The mind must use words when developing ideas, when formulating concepts, when digesting and assimilating information. When the student writes, the mind should think. However, this does not always occur. The main problem in student writing is that the student does not think. For writing is thinking, the most exact and exacting kind of thinking.

This thesis suggests that in order to improve student writing, the conditions for improved thinking must exist. These conditions would include a change or environment from the traditional, authoritarian one to an open, self-appraising one. …

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr. Jan 1978

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr.

Masters Theses

In order to have a true understanding of art there must first be some knowledge of the development as well as of the artist himself. The artist and his work are one but must be looked at from different angles; beginning with the work itself and realizing that the artist creates to satisfy some need or desire which stems from some religious or social beliefs.

When doing comparative resource study, I attemped to combine the drawing skills of extablished artist; such as Walter Campbell, Herbert Railton, Willy Pogany and Aubrey Breadsley in order to improve and express my inner thoughts. …

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor Jan 1978

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor

Masters Theses

Ernest Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, is one of America's outstanding literary figures. Criticism of his work has been voluminous--ranging from bitterly derogative to superlative--with most of it focusing upon the famous 'Hemingway code hero,' upon his crisp, concise writing style, and upon his much-publicized personal life.

One example of negative assessment by critics is the one concerning black portraiture in Hemingway's fiction. However, no work deals exclusively with this aspect of his writing. The purpose of this thesis is, first, to present a general discussion on the nature of prejudice and examination of black …

Melville And Beckett: A Legacy Of Pessimism, Jeanette Elaine Bahnke Jan 1978

Melville And Beckett: A Legacy Of Pessimism, Jeanette Elaine Bahnke

Masters Theses

Though separated by nearly a century and by two different cultures, Herman Melville and Samuel Beckett complement each other's concept of man and his world. This concept is the concept of pessimism, which each man adopted and expanded throughout his works.

Both authors lament the concept that man must struggle to attempt unachievable goals, yet both also insist that the only way to maintain a type of balance is to "go on."

The Beckettian-Melvillian hero, consequently, is a "thought-diver." As he strips layers from the Self, he simultaneously strips layers from the cosmos. Thus, the stripping of the Self and …

Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan Jan 1978

Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan

Masters Theses

The readjustment problems that were encountered by the prisoners-of-war (POWs) were caused by their identification problems, the chief aspect of which was their defensive isolationism. These problems produced further difficulties for the individual POW in the behavioral category and for the entire POW group in their underlying distrust of the outside world. These also produced confused reactions, paranoid syndromes, and a lack of participation in military and civilian affairs, and were expressed in the POWs as fearful withdrawal and belligerent negation with anti-social overtones. These problems were more marked in the case of the Korean War prisoners than in the …

Clothing Of Pioneer Women Of Dakota Territory, 1861-1889, Joyce Marie Larson Jan 1978

Clothing Of Pioneer Women Of Dakota Territory, 1861-1889, Joyce Marie Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hard-times of the Dakota Territory demanding strenuous physical labor compelled the investigator to study the clothing and dressmaking needs of pioneer women 1861-1889. This historical study of costume provides an insight into the life styles [sic] and the role of pioneer women as they interpreted clothing into their physical and utilitarian needs in adapting to the new frontier. The purpose of this research was to study the costume of the American women who resided in the Dakota Territory prior to the statehood of South Dakota, November 2, 1889. During the period 1861-1889, the Missouri River served as a geographical barrier …

The Females Within The Design/Debris Motif In Three Novels By John Hawkes, Evelyn Carol Sweet Jan 1978

The Females Within The Design/Debris Motif In Three Novels By John Hawkes, Evelyn Carol Sweet

Master's Theses

John Hawkes, according to Tony Tanner, is perhaps the most "disturbing" contemporary American writer. Many people would agree with this commentary on Hawkes, a man whose work has moved from the surreal in The Cannibal (1949) toward the more realistic, a movement predicted by Albert Guerard in his introduction to The Cannibal. As this movement away from the surreal has occurred, then why does Tanner find Hawkes' "disturbing" in a review of his most recent novel, Travesty? Perhaps because this movement was not from the surreal to the realistic as we generally use the term, but rather a movement from …

The "City On A Hill" : Tom Johnson And Cleveland 1901-1909, Keith Dean Dickson Jan 1978

The "City On A Hill" : Tom Johnson And Cleveland 1901-1909, Keith Dean Dickson

Master's Theses

Tom Loftin Johnson, mayor of Cleveland, Ohio from 1901 to 1909, was once hailed by a contemporary as "The outstanding municipal executive so far produced in United States history." Indeed, this judgment probably holds true even to the present day. Johnson's drive, combined with his uncompromising dedication to justice, dominated Cleveland politics and invigorated a city which had lost all sense of civic pride and responsibility. Johnson also brought a new vitality to American reform in the cities. His battles for three cent fares on the municipal street railway system, municipal ownership of public utilities, home rule, equal taxation and …

Benjamin Compson : Consciousness, Rhetoric, And The 'Fictive Art', Ann Brooke Lewis Jan 1978

Benjamin Compson : Consciousness, Rhetoric, And The 'Fictive Art', Ann Brooke Lewis

Master's Theses

A study of consciousness in the first section of The Sound and the Fury clarifies both the novel's technique and its rendering of human truth. My reading of this monologue is based on the premise that the way Benjamin Compson views the world and the way in which his mind arranges those views enhances our understanding of the novel's other brother-narrators, Quentin and Jason. As limited and distorted as Benjy's perceptions may be, they provide a model by which the perceptions of Quentin and Jason gain clarity and meaning. Benjy's monologue begins the novel and provides the reader's entrance into …

A Study Of The Concepts Of Worship Held By Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Youth Undergoing Cultural Shift In The United States, Kwang Rim Chough

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a theology of corporate worship and to study the concepts of worship held by the youth of a specific ethnic group who are moving away from their native cultural background, and will inevitably be exposed to the new culture. The researcher of this project intends to apply these theological concepts of worship to a specifically situated group of youth, namely representatives of the second generation of the Korean Seventh-day Adventist churches in the United States.

This research and.investigation was carried out in a selected number of Korean Seventh-day Adventist churches in the …

A Strategy For Seventh-Day Adventist Public Evangelism Within A Roman Catholic Society Context In Hispanic America, Salim Japas Jan 1978

A Strategy For Seventh-Day Adventist Public Evangelism Within A Roman Catholic Society Context In Hispanic America, Salim Japas

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The so-called "New School of Integral Evangelism" which has been operating in many countries of Hispanic America for the last few years has been demonstrated as quite successful in its evangelistic approach to Roman Catholic Hispanic Americans. To discover the nature of this approach has been the problem under investigation in this project.

Method This research is a description of the nature, strategies, and techniques that this particular method uses. This was done mainly by analyzing the San Pedro Sula, Honduras, campaign, which was the first Andrews University School of Evangelism conducted by the author in the summer of …

An Exploration Of The Needs Of, And Possibilities Of Ministry To, Geographically Isolated Seventh-Day Adventists, Thomas Hunter Ludowici Jan 1978

An Exploration Of The Needs Of, And Possibilities Of Ministry To, Geographically Isolated Seventh-Day Adventists, Thomas Hunter Ludowici

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

There are some Seventh-day Adventist Church members who, because of mileage distance or other geographic reason, are unable to attend a local church regularly, and whose membership is listed on the conference church roll. If the church is to minister to all its members, this segment cannot be ignored. The geographically isolated members have received very little pastoral nurture, and they have experienced only limited fellowship. As a result, generally they have maintained a weakened connection with the church at large. Because the seventh- day Sabbath is a central aspect of belief and worship practice, it is meaningful for …

An Evaluation Of Selected Seventh-Day Adventist Sermons In Mexico Against Certain Criteria For Biblical Preaching, Samuel Donaldo Schmidt Jan 1978

An Evaluation Of Selected Seventh-Day Adventist Sermons In Mexico Against Certain Criteria For Biblical Preaching, Samuel Donaldo Schmidt

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem.

Some of the Seventh-day Adventist sermons preached in Mexico appear to offer limited biblical content. It has been observed that overtaxed ministers often present material that does not correspond to some of the members' expectations. Since the word of God is central in the praise and adoration of God and constitutes the message to be proclaimed, it is important for preachers to understand better ways to preach the Good News.

Method

The purpose of this project was to explore current Seventh- day Adventist preaching in Mexico with respect-to sermon content. The theology of God's proclamation places great responsibility upon …

A Conceptual Model Of Seventh-Day Adventist Organization For The Local Church, Trevor J. Delafield Jan 1978

A Conceptual Model Of Seventh-Day Adventist Organization For The Local Church, Trevor J. Delafield

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In order for the Seventh-day Adventist church to accomplish fully its mission, the local church must be organized effectively to produce the results required by its mission. For this purpose, a conceptual model may be helpful. Until the present, no such model had been developed. The constant appearance of new techniques and processes in management call for development of instruments for evaluation by the church, and have at the same time raised the discipline to new heights of respectability. The question of the theology of the church is under study as never before. At least one Seventh-day Adventist theologian …

A Study Of The Implications Of The Piagetian Theory Of Moral Development For Seventh-Day Adventist Schools : Based On A Comparison Of Selected Schools In Hong Kong, Michigan And Indiana, Edward Han Ho Jan 1978

A Study Of The Implications Of The Piagetian Theory Of Moral Development For Seventh-Day Adventist Schools : Based On A Comparison Of Selected Schools In Hong Kong, Michigan And Indiana, Edward Han Ho

Dissertations

Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is losing a great number of youth. The unfavorable attitudes on the part of many youth toward god's commandments are thought to have been partially responsible for this apostasy phenomenon.

Method. This study was designed to find out whether the Piagetian theory of moral judgment development can give some insight into this problem and its solution. Two Piagetian paired-stories sets were used to test children's moral judgment. Chi Square tests were employed to analyze data. The following hypotheses were tested:

1. There will be no differences between the various age levels in the way American …

Implications Of Selected Curricular Determinants For Seventh-Day Adventist Graduate Theological Education In The South American Division, Nancy J. Vyhmeister Jan 1978

Implications Of Selected Curricular Determinants For Seventh-Day Adventist Graduate Theological Education In The South American Division, Nancy J. Vyhmeister

Dissertations

Problem. The South American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is studying the possibility of offering graduate theological education in its own territory. According to curricular theory, decisions regarding curricula should be based on studies of the society in which the school functions, studies of the nature and status of the discipline, and studies of the needs and aspirations of the learners. Information regarding South American society and theological education in the territory of the South American Division existed in scattered sources and needed to be gathered and organized. Most of the information concerning the learner--the Seventh-day Adventist minister …

The Literary Structure Of The Genesis Creation Story, Jacques Doukhan Jan 1978

The Literary Structure Of The Genesis Creation Story, Jacques Doukhan

Dissertations

Exegetical research on Gen 1 has been characterized since the 18th century essentially by a diachronic concern. Thus the Documentary hypothesis and the so-called Tatbericht-Wortbericht theory have been the two main starting points of any relevant scholarly study of this text. Recently, under the influence of contemporary literary studies, attention has been drawn to the validity of the synchronic approach, and more and more scholars have thus become aware of the importance of the liteary structure of this text. The latter has been dissociated from the thematic distribution of motifs; this tension has been explained in terms of different sources, …

Art Experiences For Children, Yvonne Moran Jan 1978

Art Experiences For Children, Yvonne Moran

Theses

This document, written by Yvonne Moran in 1978, serves as a guide to incorporating art experiences into children’s learning to foster creativity, self-expression, and personal development. The approach combines elements of art and dance therapy, highlighting how movement, color, and self-reflective activities can help children build confidence, communicate emotions, and explore their identities. An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor Jan 1978

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.

Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …
