Limitations Of The Middleman Minority Model Of Ethnic Enterprise, Dorlene C. Russell Jan 1980

Limitations Of The Middleman Minority Model Of Ethnic Enterprise, Dorlene C. Russell

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Minorities have evolved through wars of conquest, peace treaties, acts of violence, peaceful migrations and religious conversions. "The genesis of minorities must therefore be sought in the fact that territory, political authority, people, and culture only rarely coincide" (Wirth in Wagley and Harris, 1958:365). The type of minorityhood which is the topic of this paper is one which is closely akin to the concept of pariah people—people on the move who become minorities in their new social environment, yet adapt and prosper (if they survive) often surpassing a variety of other ethnic minorities in the society to which they have …

The Illusion Of Mirrored And Reflective Surfaces, Doug Castenson Jan 1980

The Illusion Of Mirrored And Reflective Surfaces, Doug Castenson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The study of mirrored and reflective surfaces has been a fascination of mine for several years. It began with a curiosity in the reflected image from the traditional wall mirror and other mirrored and reflective surfaces. My earliest graduate research concentrated on the illustration of reflected images on a two-dimensional surface. As my work progressed, however, the discovery of new media such as mirrored plexiglass and reflective paints allowed me greater flexibility and introduced the possibility of distorting the perceived mirrored image. Experimentation with these materials indicated the possibility of using the entire surface as a reflective mirror, quite unrelated …

Preparing Classroom Teachers For Their Role In The Participation Theatre Experience For The Primary School Audience, Nancy Norvell Ball Jan 1980

Preparing Classroom Teachers For Their Role In The Participation Theatre Experience For The Primary School Audience, Nancy Norvell Ball

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Participation theatre provides a creative and valuable experience for the primary school child. The attitude and involvement of the classroom teacher can hinder or enhance this experience for the child. The purpose of this study is to describe: A. a five-step process by which a children's theatre company can insure a positive teacher attitude during performance and stimulate the teacher to provide creative follow-up activities in the classroom; and B. the implementation of this process by The Tiddly Winks Players during a pilot project in four Waterloo, Iowa, elementary schools in the spring semester of 1980. The components and goals …

Ascetic Progression, Nancy Bartusch Jan 1980

Ascetic Progression, Nancy Bartusch

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The title of my Studio Thesis is Ascetic Progression. My paintings reflect asceticism because they involve a solitary, personal search. The search leads to the unknown, as in a silent, tidal progression. I do not want to paint the things that I know. I may use a certain type of imagery or structure repeatedly as one uses the same language in new composition to express new thought. I am painting blindly in a way. I say blindly, because I want to reach beyond what I know. I may learn it at a later time, but when I paint it, it …

Consequences Of Conquest Upon Roman Political, Social, Economic, Cultural And Architectural Development During And After The Punic Wars, 2nd Century B.C., Deborah Carol Blinka Jan 1980

Consequences Of Conquest Upon Roman Political, Social, Economic, Cultural And Architectural Development During And After The Punic Wars, 2nd Century B.C., Deborah Carol Blinka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Roman conquest of the eastern Mediterranean (264-100 B.C.) was one of the more important events in Roman history. The expansion of Carthage had been brought to a halt when the genius of the Roman general Scipio enabled the Romans to defeat the Carthaginians decisively on their own ground, at Zama in North Africa. With Carthage subdued, Rome set out systematically forestalling the rise of any potentially dangerous rival in Greece or the Near East. Rome gradually filled the power vacuum left by the disintegrating Hellenistic states and for the first time in history, the whole Mediterranean area was to …

Caspar Schwenckfeld’S Commentary On The Augsburg Confession: A Translation And Critical Introduction, Fred A. Grater

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this thesis is to present a scholarly English translation, with appropriate background matter and historico-theological material, of Caspar von Schwenckfeld’s Commentary on the Augsburg Confession, written sometime during or after Autumn, 1531. There is a brief biographical chapter, as well as short chapters on Schwenckfeld’s relationship with Luther and Melanchthon, and a synopsis of Schwenckfeld’s theology, with special emphasis on themes presented in this Commentary (religious liberty, concept of the Church). The text of Document 103 of the Corpus Schwenckfeldianorum (Vol. III, pp. 862-940, No. 58 in the so-called “P” Epistolar) is translated with notes and …

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl Jan 1980

An Examination Of Personal Salvation In The Theology Of North American Evangelicalism: On The Road To A Theology Of Social Justice, Robert F.J. Gmeindl

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The question under consideration is the effect of the belief in personal salvation on the theology of North American Evangelicalism, for the purpose of developing a theology of social justice.

This study is a preliminary investigation of the history of Evangelical individualism and the potential influence that individualism might have on Evangelical theology. Certain trends toward isolation and separation, as well as a tendency to neglect what I have called systemic evil, are examined to see how they may result from the Evangelical stress on individualism. Also presented in a skeletal outline of Marcuse’s analysis of one-dimensional society in order …

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney Jan 1980

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney

Dissertations and Theses

In 1958 Stephen E. Toulmin wrote of inadequacies of formal logic and proposed a new field-dependent approach to the analysis of arguments. Despite a generally negative response to his proposal from formal logicians, Toulmin's model for the laying out of arguments for analysis was subsequently appropriated by several speech communication textbook writers. In some textbooks, the Toulmin model has become successor to the syllogism as the paradigm of logical argument. Yet, perhaps due to their seemingly uncritical acceptance of Toulmin's approach there appears to be serious disagreement and confusion among speech communication professionals about the nature and applications of the …

Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich Jan 1980

Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich

Dissertations and Theses

A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Weinen, Hagen [I.E. Klagen] Organ Transcription By Franz Liszt Arranged For Band, Richard Wayne Guidry Dec 1979

Weinen, Hagen [I.E. Klagen] Organ Transcription By Franz Liszt Arranged For Band, Richard Wayne Guidry

Music ETDs

Written for the piano in 1862, "Weiner Hagen" variations were transcribed in 1863 for organ by Franz Liszt. The transcription is really a large fantasia in the key of F minor that consists of groups of variations, all of which are based on two closely related themes. This arrangement for symphonic band was written for the intended use of any university or good high school level organization. There are many exposed solos and other sections and in various places, extreme ranges of instruments are realized. The arrangement imitates the sound achieved by a large church organ and this fact must …

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills Dec 1979

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills

Honors Theses

"the Suffolk Campaign: A Case Study," covers the Civil War that began on April 11, 1863 and ended on May 3, 1863 and centered around the small Tidewater Virginia town of Suffolk. Suffolk's strategic prominence was derived from its access to the James River, through tributary (the Nansemond), and two major railroads which ran through the town--the Petersburg and Norfolk, and the Roanoke and Seaboard. The Confederates abandoned the town after McClellan's Peninsula Campaign made their position their untenable. Federal troops quickly entered Suffolk and established it as the first line of defense for Norfolk. Suffolk came under the military …

Mothers And Daughters In Nineteenth Century America: Ideology, Experience And Legacy, Nancy Marlene Theriot Dec 1979

Mothers And Daughters In Nineteenth Century America: Ideology, Experience And Legacy, Nancy Marlene Theriot

History ETDs

This study is an examination of women and femininity in nineteenth-century America. Its central theme is the role of women in creating, responding to, and re-creating feminine gender. I discuss the evidence in terms of two major points: women's creation of gender out of their physical experience, and the centrality of the mother/daughter relationship in the evolution of femininity. My sources include literature written by women and men, the medical writings of physicians, midwives and healers, and the diaries of women whose lives were at least partially lived between 1800 and 1865. The sources necessarily limit the scope of this …

Notes On Viewfinding, Anna Lynn Grimes Dec 1979

Notes On Viewfinding, Anna Lynn Grimes

Art & Art History ETDs

My mixed media works on paper are a result of an exploration in the landscape that I call “viewfinding. '' This exploration involves looking at the surrounding physical environment from different perspectives, discovering features that are significant to me and producing evidence of these discoveries in my work. To expand my concept of the landscape I explore multiple ways of viewing, i.e. viewing from different positions in the landscape, through window frames and through secondary sources of information such as maps and scientific diagrams. Levels of information are collected and reassembled in my "view” drawings of the landscape. The resulting …

A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson Dec 1979

A Construct Validity Study For The Women Workers Scale Questionnaire, Gwen Simpson

Dissertations and Theses

This study attempted to obtain evidence on the construct validity of the Women Workers Scale (WWS), an attitude scale developed to measure male supervisors' attitudes toward women workers. As women enter the work world in increasing numbers, they are usually supervised by men. However, few studies have examined the attitudes of male supervisors toward women workers. At least one author (Bass, 1972) reported that there were significant differences among male managers in their attitudes toward women. Specifically, those male managers who had not worked with women held more favorable attitudes than male managers who had worked with women.

My Onepoint Plan For Saving The World Or Approaching The Goddess, Playfully, Jason Eric Jones Dec 1979

My Onepoint Plan For Saving The World Or Approaching The Goddess, Playfully, Jason Eric Jones

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis discusses my primary motivations in making art, which center around a felt need to exercise the nonverbal, arational processes that seem inappropriate, or at least generally neglected, in our culture. The trend toward increasing intellectuality at the expense of emotionality is described as a prime cause of Western civilization's “spiritual bankruptcy," and various rebellious movements against this trend, such as the cult of the White Goddess, are mentioned, briefly. Bicameral mind theory is used as a convenient model for the duality of the rational and the intuitive. In the context of this model, my approach to photography, which …

The Argentine Historical Novel: Trajectory And Panorama, Garth Muirbrook Hansen Dec 1979

The Argentine Historical Novel: Trajectory And Panorama, Garth Muirbrook Hansen

Latin American Studies ETDs

This study is an initial survey of the Argentine historical novel (1840-1970). Although Argentina has a rich literary tradition, no previous analysis has considered the trajectory and persistence of such fiction throughout a century and a half of multiple literary influences and changing tastes. The human experience recreated through historical research is as legitimate a matter for literary treatment as that observed first hand by an author and not only provided the form for Argentina's first novels but has proved to be a favorite genre with both readers and writers. The characteristics of historical fiction are identified through an examination …

Mexicans, Labor, And Strife In Arizona, 1896-1917, Michael E. Casillas Dec 1979

Mexicans, Labor, And Strife In Arizona, 1896-1917, Michael E. Casillas

History ETDs

The years between 1890 and 1920 were crucial in the rise of modern organized labor in the United States. During this period, America saw the demise of the Knights of Labor and the subsequent ascent to union supremacy of the American Federation of Labor. As the organized labor movement grew, it reached out to encourage the participation of workers throughout the Rocky Mountain region and the far west. Western laborers, led by hard rock miners, created organizations such as the American Labor Union (ALU), Western Labor Union (WLU), and most notably the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) that represented their …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a record of the history of the Ethiopian Theatre from its beginning in 1973 though 1979. It traces and studies the educational validity and essential contributions to the New Orleans community.

It also examines the techniques and methods employed by the directors in the development of believable …

A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel Dec 1979

A Survey History Of Islamic Da'wah And The Egyptian-Nigerian Connections, Luka T. Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

For history sources, I have depended heavily on the relevant pieces of literature in my possession, on those of Loma Linda University, California, and of the University of Washington, Seattle, and on those in the Arab Republic of Egypt, particularly at Al-Azhar University, the American University at Cairo, and the British Consulate in Cairo. Further, I have had personal interviews with professors at Loma Linda and Seattle, and with Muslim and Christian scholars (clergy and laity) in Egypt and Nigeria.

Since this survey is more historical than sociological, and since Islamic da'wah is twelve to thirteen centuries older than sociological …

Alienation And Creativity: A Study In Twentieth Century American Art, Judi Church Nov 1979

Alienation And Creativity: A Study In Twentieth Century American Art, Judi Church

Art & Art History ETDs

The society in which one lives conditions the creativity of the individual. To quote Herbert Read, alienation, "is the progressive divorce of human faculties from natural process.” A society in which alienation is pervasive will spawn types of artistic activity related to that phenomenon. The desire to create is a positive means of transcending the alienation of contemporary life. In attempting through art to unite self and world I have looked to the works and lives of other artists. These include Jasper Johns, Antonio Tapiès, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and Richard Diebenkorn. The evolution of my work over the past …
