The Post-Postmodern Aesthetics Of John Fowles, Claiborne Johnson Cordle May 1981

The Post-Postmodern Aesthetics Of John Fowles, Claiborne Johnson Cordle

Master's Theses

Because a thesis is by definition a proposi tion to be argued, I feel some obigation to make strong assertion--either John Fowles is a post modernist writer, or John Fowles is not a postmodernist writer. What is immediately "problematic" about such an either/or proposition is that each side can be argued convincingly by a careful process of selection of examples to support the prospective cases (and omission of those which refute them). I cannot easily dismiss the wisdom of Northrop Frye's statement that, "They think of ideas as weapons; they seek the irrefutable argument, which keeps eluding them because all …

The Emergence Of An Afro-American Society In Colonial Amelia County Virginia, Carol Noble Funk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The eighteenth century is a critical time in a study of American slavery. The colonial years witnessed the development of cultural, social and demographic processes affecting African and Afro-American slaves, the result of which was an Afro-American culture and society, unique to this nation. The slave family and kin network system of the antebellum south and the post Civil War era had its genesis in the decades preceeding the Revolutionary War.

There have been many studies done on slavery in colonial Virginia, but with few exceptions they have focused on the wealthy planters residing in the tidewater counties. They describe …

Chosen People, S. Eugene Needham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is an explanation of the artist's philosophy of art and religion which brought him to complete the specific paintings prepared for his graduate show. The paintings are of a generally religious nature, painted for the artist's private enjoyment and need for individual expression. The artist, admiring the achievements of Christian Art and wanting to add his statement, has researched related areas of thought to support his beliefs in life's ultimate considerations. Within the scope of the artist's ability he has produced a limited vision of Christian subjects with hopefully original Mormon-Hebraic overtones. The thesis also develops a theoretical …

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey Apr 1981

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey

Honors Theses

The year 1917 is probably the most significant year in modern Russian history, Many people view this as the year of the Bolsheviks. Indeed, Lenin and his cohorts seized the reigns of government in November (all date will be given in New Style) of that year and propelled Russia down an untrodden path of history. The effects of this revolution now permeate the globe. Some view that fateful day as the beginning of man's salvation from the exploitation of capitalism. Others view it as the birth of a pernicious disease which must be eliminated in a final apocalyptic battle to …

Excerpt: "The Free Methodist Church was organized in a meeting at Pekin, Niagara County, New York, on August 23, 1860. The Banker's Briar Patch: The American Banker's Association And The Glass-Owen Bill Of 1913, Robert Drake Scull

History Theses & Dissertations

In order to compete with the British in international finance, leading bankers in the United States began to agitate for a central bank and "elastic" currency at least as early as 1905. Although the Panic of 1907 helped stir interest in banking reform, the political climate was so prejudiced against the banking profession that it became necessary for ABA spokesmen to condemn publicly the proposed legislation in order to insure that it would be passed. Privately, these same bankers worked closely with Woodrow Wilson and helped elect him president in 1912. Wilson returned the favor with the Federal Reserve Act …
