Effective Pastoral Care For The Bereaved, Michael Klatt May 1982

Effective Pastoral Care For The Bereaved, Michael Klatt

Master of Divinity Thesis

The topic which I have chosen for my research elective is "grief.” The name which I have chosen for my study is "Effective Pastoral Care for the Bereaved." Since the grieving process is something which everyone goes through at one time of their life or another, I felt that doing a study of bereavement after the loss of a loved one would be a very appropriate subject. The pastor must know how to give effective pastoral care for the bereaved person, so it is essential that he know about grief with its various causes and stages. The pastor must also …

An Evaluation Of The Position Of The Missouri Synod On The Antichrist, Richard Hillenbrand May 1982

An Evaluation Of The Position Of The Missouri Synod On The Antichrist, Richard Hillenbrand

Master of Divinity Thesis

In this study, then, we will concentrate on three main witnesses: that of the Scriptures, that of sixteenth century Lutherans (with special emphasis on Luther), and that of the Missouri Synod. Each will be dealt with thoroughly in separate sections. The stance taken will be presented, and also the historical circumstances that brought about that stance at that particular time. Stances and the reasons for them will be compared and, finally, the practical implications of differing stances will be discussed.

A Study Of The Rhetorical And Thematic Structure Of The So-Called "Holiness Code" (Leviticus 17- 26) In Order To Evaluate Unity And Authenticity, Roger Cotton

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My purpose is not to disprove the critic3,1 assumptions, methods, or theories~, but to do a fresh, straightforward, and thorough literary .analysis of the canonical text of Leviticus 17- 26 o I want to investigate the rhetorical and thematic ·structural aspects of the text and consider how these affect the interpretation of its meaning. 7 I want to determine what organization, what structure, what unity and purpose, if any, there are in Leviticus 17-26, and if it is authentic to Leviticus as a whole.

The Doctrine And History Of Worship In The Reformed Presbyterian Church Of North America, John Delivuk May 1982

The Doctrine And History Of Worship In The Reformed Presbyterian Church Of North America, John Delivuk

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As the smaller, conservative Presbyterian churches have moved towards merger, one doctrinal problem has emerged. It is the position of the Reformed Presbyterian (Covenanter) Church of North America (RPC) on worship. The Reformed Presbyterian Church holds to the traditional Reformed positions of a capella singing and the exclusive use of the Psalms for singing in worship. This thesis was written to explain Reformed Presbyterian worship. The questions that it attempts to answer are: What is the historical basis for Reformed Presbyterian worship? What is the doctrinal basis for Reformed Presbyterian worship? What, if any, have been the changes in Reformed …

A Comparative Study Of The Psalter In Light Of Qumran Cave Eleven Psalter Scroll A, Martin Homan May 1982

A Comparative Study Of The Psalter In Light Of Qumran Cave Eleven Psalter Scroll A, Martin Homan

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The major thesis of this paper is that llQPs is better understood not as a Psalter but as a liturgical psalmbook, a collection of psalms, used by the Dead Sea community. This scroll's text does not support the theory of Frank M. Cross, Jr. on local text types, but the text does have importance for textual criticism of the Old Testament. llQPs supports an understanding of an earlier development of the canon of the Old Testament. This thesis will be developed in the subsequent chapters.

The Missouri Synod's Unity Attempts During The Pfotenhauer Presidency, 1911-1935, John Wohlrabe May 1982

The Missouri Synod's Unity Attempts During The Pfotenhauer Presidency, 1911-1935, John Wohlrabe

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to examine the unity attempts of the 4 German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States (hereafter referred to as the Missouri Synod) during the presidency of Frederick Pfotenhauer (1911-1935). This period of the Missouri Synod's history has been chosen because it was during these years that American Lutheranism, as a whole, began to consolidate through mergers, amalgamations, and various federations. The synodical alignments and boundaries that exist today in American Lutheranism found much of their early formation during this period of time. In analyzing the Missouri Synod's attitude and involvement in …

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight : Entertainment--The Author's Intention, Gregory Kabanuk May 1982

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight : Entertainment--The Author's Intention, Gregory Kabanuk

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The subject of this paper is the Gawain poet and his monumental poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The concern will not be with the poet's identity or social rank, but will instead be with his motives. In some places this paper will appear to work backwards, assuming that since a certain effect was achieved, it must have been intended, but that is not an uncommon assumption in literary criticism.

Entertainment value will be stressed not because Sir Gawain is exclusively entertainment, but because the primary purpose of the author was to entertain, as a sermon may be …

Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep May 1982

Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study of four of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales presents a distinct view of a character's self awareness of sin and his refusal to seek repentance as being the cause of his death. The message here is that of the Fall. "The Great Carbuncle," "The Hollow of the Three Hills," "Lady Eleanore's Mantle," and "The Ambitious Guest" demonstrate that man is sinful and in need of redemption just as the Bible demonstrates man's fallen state and need for forgiveness through Christ, the second Adam. In these tales characters act out of selfish pride and become aware of their transgressions just …

Uemura Masahisa (1857-1925) First Generation Pastor, Christian Leader And Instinctive Proponent Of Indigenized Christianity In Japan, Addison Soltau May 1982

Uemura Masahisa (1857-1925) First Generation Pastor, Christian Leader And Instinctive Proponent Of Indigenized Christianity In Japan, Addison Soltau

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Uemura was an extremely able leader and organizer of men, sophisticated thinker, broad reader, and committed to the Christian faith ashes understood it. Part of the fascination of the study lies in observing how the influence of this towering figure and others like him came so quickly to bear upon the church in Japan. Unlike other countries to which the faith has been taken by missionaries, Japan stands out as one in which missionary leadership and influence were replaced by Japanese within thirty years after its introduction. Uemura was one who helped to bring this about. The Christian church in …

Architecture And Town Development In The Mining Camps Of Southwestern New Mexico, Carol L. Clark Apr 1982

Architecture And Town Development In The Mining Camps Of Southwestern New Mexico, Carol L. Clark

Art & Art History ETDs

The architecture and town planning of the mining communities in Grant and Sierra Counties, New Mexico during the later nineteenth century are the focus of this study. The intent is to describe and illustrate the phases of development in these towns through three stages: The Initial Settlement, The Boomtown, and The Mature Town. The changing character of the architecture reflected the increasing stability, wealth, and sophistication in the camps. These towns were populated by Anglo-American immigrants and reflected the tastes and culture of America in the late 1800's. Popular architectural styles from the Midwestern and Eastern states were imitated in …

A Nomenclature Of Brazilian Spiritism And An Evaluation Of Christian Defenses, Donald Lloyd Watson Apr 1982

A Nomenclature Of Brazilian Spiritism And An Evaluation Of Christian Defenses, Donald Lloyd Watson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Spiritism is one of the oldest cults in existence. Practically every major civilization has indulged in spiritistic practices. Through the centuries it waxed and waned in popularity, but still it managed to survive until this present day. Estimates of the number of practicing Spiritists are as high as half a million in the United States and more than three million in Brazil.l Good statistics are difficult to obtain because of the stigma attached to one who claims to be a Spiritist.

The ancient history of Spiritism is both interesting and informative. In the literature of the Egyptians, Babylonians, Chinese and …

The Political Connection In Literature: A Study Of Four Socialist Novels, James W. Hoffman

This thesis is a comparative analysis of four socialist novels, two from Cuba and two from the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Both of the German works are by Christa Wolf, Der Geteilte Himmel (Divided Heaven, 1963) and Nachdenken aber Christa T. (The Quest for Christa T., 1968). The Cuban novels are Memorias del subdesarrollo (Inconsolable Memories-- literally, Memories of Underdevelopment, 1965) by Edmundo Desnoes, and La última mujer y el próximo combate (The Last Woman and the Next Battle, 1971) by Manuel Cofiño López. The Contributions Of Robert Grosseteste And Roger Bacon To The Development Of The Scientific Method At Oxford, Isabel Charles Duncan Hatchett Apr 1982

The Contributions Of Robert Grosseteste And Roger Bacon To The Development Of The Scientific Method At Oxford, Isabel Charles Duncan Hatchett

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Robert Grosseteste and Roger Bacon were instrumental in bringing about the use of experimental science and inductive reasoning at Oxford University, and in making science and mathematics a central part of intellectual thought. Grosseteste introduced the experimental method and Bacon assured its survival, amplifying Grosseteste's ideas and passing them on, His role was as important to science and mathematics as was Grosseteste's innovation.

The scientific thoughts of these men differed radically from the accepted medieval approach. They used mathematics and experimentation in their studies and worked with theories of science and education in developing their ideas. They examined science in …

Blueprints For A Small Theatre, Thomas J. Gale Apr 1982

Blueprints For A Small Theatre, Thomas J. Gale

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The contemporary small theatre, considered by some to be the germ of a new American theatre, has long been plagued by artistic starvation, technical ineptitude, and administrative inefficiency. Despite its traditional shortcomings, the small theatre has the potential to develop into a vital and financially viable institution.

Through a synthesis of the published opinions of theatre professionals and direct observations gleaned from practical theatre experience, this study addresses the aesthetic and practical problems faced by many contemporary small theatres. Solutions to these problems are suggested through specific plans for the establishment of a small but expanded professional theatre company.

The …

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires Apr 1982

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires

Honors Theses

By 1789, when the French people were just becoming absorbed in revolutionary activity, both the United States and Britain already enjoyed relatively stable political systems which asserted fundamental rights of each individual and established a protection of these rights against moral and political infringement. To insure the perpetuation of these 'inalienable' rights, revolutionary Americans fought violently to break the oppressive bonds of a tyrannical monarch. The English, in 1688, more conservatively chose to build upon their existing modes of government. Because the French Revolution sought to abolish many principles on which the British government rested, it would seem logical for …

An Exegetical Workbook Of New Testament Grammar, Mike Weber Mar 1982

An Exegetical Workbook Of New Testament Grammar, Mike Weber

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The purpose of this paper is to provide quick reference aid in New Testament grammar for the serious Greek exegete. The reference charts promote the analytical discernment of the exegete. In other words, the exegete is forced to consider other possible alternatives for the function of a verb, infinitive, participle, conjunction or preposition. This analysis then provides a better interpretation of the text. The charts are not to be used to justify the function of a verb, infinitive, participle, conjunction or preposition for a preference in theology but to discover the true meaning of the text.
